I reformatted my laptop to give it a fresh clean look. I plugged my "My Book" to install my applications and transfer my back ups and when I will remove it. I can't see "Safely remove icon" I plugged a flash drive and the "Safely remove" icon shows up. Weird thing is, safely remove doesn't sees my "My Book" as an external hard drive. I can't only remove the flash drive and not the "My Book" I test my "My Book" onto a different laptop and it works fine. It also works fine on our desktop. Seems like only my laptop has issues. How can I tell my laptop that "My Book" is a removable device?
Does your external hard drive function normally on the laptop other than the safely remove hardware option is missing? That option will not be available if write caching is disabled. Its a convenient way to prevent disk errors and data loss in exchange for reduced performance. Write-caching can be enabled or disabled for a particular drive by right-clicking it in My Computer, click properties, click hardware tab, select drive, click properties, click policies, enable/disable write caching. Do not disable this option EVER for internal hard drives.
