Hi, I saw your post to another person with the same issues so I figured I'd ask for your help. I read through that post and did the following to steps to speed things up.
The problem I am having is my older Dell is now hanging on IE7 and on firefox. It starts out ok then goes to 99% then hovers back and forth between 4% and 90%. Also just about everything I do seems to take alot longer now then before, like opening a MY DOCS file or opening WORD or right clicking desktop to change properties even opening a picture to view. Maybe my system is just old and tired??
I am running
Dell Dimension 8200
Microsoft XP Home Version 2002 SP3
P4 1.7 mhz
512 ram
80gigs/17gigs free
Nortons anti virsus

I have also run Malwarebytes and it was clean
I have also run CCleaner

Below are the following reports:
Hijackthis.txt
uninstall_lst.txt
Sec-info.txt
rootrepeal.txt
I also ran the Eset online scanner and it came back clean

Thank You for any help
Hi ctbasscatcher,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. Logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Novi is busy so let's see if I can help you.

Your Java is out of date and you have other old versions still on your computer, those old versions are now a security vulnerability:

Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
  • Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.
  • Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
  • Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer - Version 6 update 18

Then

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link –> http://forums.whatthetech.com/How_Disable_…ams_t96260.html

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Hi, Thank you for taking the time to help me….

I've done the following

JavaRa.exe

and combofix

ctbasscatcher,

I see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto-updating for the Viewpoint Manager – the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.

To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is often installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware
It is STRONGLY recommended that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself. To uninstall the Viewpoint components (Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player):

  • Click Start, then Settings, then click Control Panel.
  • In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • In Add or Remove Programs, Remove the Viewpoint component
  • Do the same for each Viewpoint component.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.

Then let me know how things are running.
Hi TomK Just wanted to give you a few more details while the Kaspersky is doing an online scan…. I have a LuComserver that occasionally takes up 100% of my resources. and sometimes there is 2 or 3 of them there. Also I could not get RaJava to update to ver. 18 even when I went to the website to try and download it. I'm running update 17 right now but can't get 18. I'll report back when the Kas scan is done. Thanks again for your help!
ctbasscatcher, Don't stress over version 18 of Java. 17 should keep you in pretty good shape and your computer will probably notify you in the next few days that it would like to update to 18. LuComserver is the live updater for your Norton security. It will use alot of resources when it is updating your system. At those times, your system will be sluggish.
It's definitely running smoother, thank you. Couple other things if you don't mind…. 1. when running firefox, after I close it out it seems to hang in my processes usually using 75k to 100k in resources. I end up going in and manually closing it out. Is that normal? 2. I'm running Norton's and my license expires in 57 days, would you recommend that I switch to Kaspersky? 3. Did you notice anything wrong or spot something when looking over reports? I ask because it seems that most if not all of the reports came back clean. Thanks again for your help Here is the report from Kas… ——————————————————————————– KASPERSKY ONLINE SCANNER 7.0: scan report Tuesday, January 19, 2010 Operating system: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3 (build 2600) Kaspersky Online Scanner version: 7.0.26.13 Last database update: Monday, January 18, 2010 23:12:06 Records in database: 3330924 ——————————————————————————– Scan settings: scan using the following database: extended Scan archives: yes Scan e-mail databases: yes Scan area - My Computer: A:\ C:\ D:\ E:\ G:\ Scan statistics: Objects scanned: 97356 Threats found: 1 Infected objects found: 2 Suspicious objects found: 0 Scan duration: 03:49:18 File name / Threat / Threats count C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\test\zapu_setup_s1.exe Infected: not-a-virus:AdWare.Win32.Shopper.am 1 C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Shared\construction estimating_ShareAccelerator.zip Infected: not-a-virus:AdWare.Win32.Shopper.am 1 Selected area has been scanned.
ctbasscatcher,

COMBOFIX-Script

  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    File::
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\test\zapu_setup_s1.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Shared\construction estimating_ShareAccelerator.zip
  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

1. when running firefox, after I close it out it seems to hang in my processes usually using 75k to 100k in resources. I end up going in and manually closing it out. Is that normal?

Is it still doing it after removing Viewpoint? Have you updated your FireFox?

2. I'm running Norton's and my license expires in 57 days, would you recommend that I switch to Kaspersky?

I'd recommend you use either Avira or Avast. Both are free. I'll give you links when we are done and clean up our tools.

3. Did you notice anything wrong or spot something when looking over reports? I ask because it seems that most if not all of the reports came back clean.

Just some adware and some dross that ComboFix took care of.
I guess Firefox is no longer hanging in the processes, Now that I think of it, it hasn't done it since we started.

This computer is definitely running smoother….

ctbasscatcher,

Log looks good :D

Time for some housekeeping
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK
  • Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
The above procedure will:
  • Implement some cleanup procedures.
  • Reset System Restore.

Now to remove most of the tools that we have used in fixing your machine:
  • Make sure you have an Internet Connection.
  • Download OTC to your desktop and run it
  • A list of tool components used in the cleanup of malware will be downloaded.
  • If your Firewall or Real Time protection attempts to block OTC to reach the Internet, please allow the application to do so.
  • Click Yes to begin the cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
  • You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Please re-enable any security that was disabled.

The following is my standard advice for the future. Use what you can and pat yourself on the back for what you're already doing.

Please take time to read Preventing Malware - Tools and Practices for Safe Computing. Very important information for your consideration is contained therein.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein

Also: "How to prevent malware"
by miekiemoes

Please respond back that you understand the above and let me know if you have any questions. Otherwise, this thread will be closed Resolved.
Ran the last 2 requests per your instructions and we are running smooth again. TomK, as I'm sure you've heard it before but I'll say it again…Thank you for your time and your help. Much appreciated!!!
Since this issue appears to be resolved … this Topic has been closed. Glad we could be of assistance. If you're the topic starter, and need this topic reopened, please contact a staff member with the address of the thread. Everyone else please begin a New Topic.
