G'day,

I'm only a beginner in this forum so take it easy on me guys!

I have referenced a previous post http://forums.whatthetech.com/System_unsta…wn_t108662.html as the commonality and symptoms were almost identical and wonder if there is more to the problem. I originally got on to this thread after having the same problem.

It appears that from the earlier post and from the errors I encountered that it all began to happen after a Version upgrade of System Mechanic, Iolo Anti virus etc from version 8.5 to 9.5.3. Major changes in the upgrade were replacement IOLO anti-virus with System Shield.

The following errors were encountered after the initial upgrade:
1) The upgrade went fairly smoothly with the exception that Sys Mech normally shutdowns AV & Firewall automatically by itself but on this occasion it requested user intervention for a manual shutdown. Once accomplished upgrade proceeded fairly normally. Virus Scan picked up a new virus and appropriately deleted. Great upgrade works.

2) System appeared to work OK for a few days then the odd reboots began to appear. Maybe 2 in a day. Note I have the system set to auto reboot on BSOD. At this point wasn't too concerned but then a few days later………………..

3) I was surfing the internet and the frequency of reboots increased to one every ten minutes.

4) Next thing to occur was that reboot was happening at login preventing me from even firing up XP

5) The only major change on my system was the IOLO upgrade. What to do next??????? After giving it some thought I booted the system up in safe mode and luckily it worked and uninstalled Sys Mechanic. Rebooted in normal mode and alas managed to log-in.

6) At this point a touch of panic set in as I had no Virus protection. I tried installing Ver. 8.5 but to no avail. After much self taught troubleshooting and the help of the mentioned post I manually deleted every entry in the registry that even vaguely referred to this program. A not of advice here the installer for Ver. 9.5 needs to be deleted by a tool such as Windows install cleanup utility. If you don't do this then IOLO AV will not install.

7) This allowed me to install Ver. 8.5 which appeared to be working OK and even picked up some additional viruses in the scan. W32/Trojan32.LHMM, BAT/LockWS. All looks like its working well and no shutdowns since. I have logged a problem query with IOLO some one week ago but no response. An indication that all is not well.

8) Conclusion: Must be something wrong with the version upgrade. Note: It appears the Sys Mech 9.5 loads drivers into the system folder. Is this normal?

9) In the process of sharing the resolution with user pcpeeod who posted the earlier thread I began the "Are infected post instructions" and guess what? The Malware Antibytes program available on this website found another 7 infections. Log below:

10) The system seems to be functioning OK since version downgrade to 8.5
11) Saying all that halfway through this post I did suffer an auto shutdown and reboot which negates the point above.
Find all logs posted as per instructions in http://forums.whatthetech.com/Are_you_Infected_t106388.html

Q1) Do I need to do any more given the additional infections found by Malware ? Note: Even after Malware removed all viruses IOLO still keeps flagging W32/Trojan32.LHMM as an intercepted virus so there must be something that is triggering it to come back found at C:\SYSTEM VOLUME INFORMATION\_RESTORE[XOXOXOXOXOX]\RP348\A0210232.EXE (Screen Dump attached)

Q2) Is it recommended to proceed to try another upgrade to Ver. 9.5 of Sys Mech. (It took me two days to get it back to normal) ? It gets very messy if the upgrade doesn't work. Tried twice now with lots of post cleanup to get back to V8.5

Hi jlech,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. Logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link –> http://forums.whatthetech.com/How_Disable_…ams_t96260.html

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
