[Closed] "Your Computer Is Infected!" warnings

After I browsed a random webpage, a .pdf file opened suddenly, and before I could stop it, it appears I got infected with malware. Now, instead of my normal wallpaper screen, I get a neon-green background with the message "You Have Been Infected!" in a big banner in the middle. I also have a new icon on my taskbar - a red circle with a white X in the middle, and I keep getting annoying popup messages telling me to "click here". Also, I can't do a System Restore, nor open certain programs now. No doubt malware-relates issues.

I ran a Hijackthis logfile, and since I've used Kaspersky online before to find malware, I also scanned using it, too. I hope I haven't jumped the gun on that.

I'm posting both logfiles here. Thank you for your help.

Hi. Thanks for getting to me so quickly.

Let me fill you in on what I've done. I've posted in the forums before for assistance, and sometimes it would take up to three days for help. Immediately after I posted here yesterday, I remembered that after I had run the Malwarebytes Antimalware program to try to get rid of this thing (to no effect), I hadn't updated it first. So I right away updated that program and ran it again (before you posted to me), and it found several items infected, which I removed. After deleting the infections, my laptop seems to be working fine - at least, there's no more evidence that this malware is present..

I went ahead and ran the programs you suggested anyway. I did have trouble with the DDS links. The first only gave me encryption mish-mash - I don't know what that was. The other link was to a screen-saver? I wasn't sure about them, so I didn't run that one. I can run a Hijackthis log as well as the others if you want me to.

Thanks!

Hi,

Not sure what is wrong with the first link, but the second link is not a screensaver, right click it, save it to your desktop, save it as all files.

If you still can't get it to work, run this next program.

We don't use HJT anymore, doesn't give us enough information.

Download OTL to your Desktop

Hi,

I see you ran ComboFix previously.

The tool has been pulled due to a bug. Please post the log(s) from the run(s). They can be located at C:\combofix.txt and C:\Qoobox\Combofix2.txt C:\Qoobox\Combofix3.txt etc.

Please do the following:

Please download OTM by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please click OTM and then click >> run.
  • Copy the lines inside the codebox below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy): (do not copy the word "code" > start with the colon in front of :processes)

[Reboot]
  • Return to OTM, right click in the "Paste Instructions for items to be Moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTM
Note: If an item cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.
Ok, I ran the OTM and did what you instructed. It automatically rebooted, then upon reboot it gave me a log, which I'm putting in here. I searched for the Combofix log I ran previously, but it wasn't at either location you mentioned on my computer (that I could see), nor did I evidently save it elsewhere. If you want me to run it again, I can.

Thanks.

Hi, No need to run it again, but search for the log using your windows explorer - combofix.txt or combofix2.txt …see if it is elsewhere. Re run Malwarebytes Antimalware - update it, run a quick scan and post a log. Rescan with the Kaspersky online scanner as well, post the log.
