Hi -
I believe I infected my laptop yesterday, through some type of internet download.
Problems it began with:
-changed my desktop
-changed my homepage on internet explorer
-redirected me away from certain sites such as google.com
*little red icon with white x on taskbar says "Your computer is infected!"
-this has a constant pop up telling me my registry has been altered
-it also asks me to to download a program called Registry Cleanup

So far, I have run Adaware, Spybot Search and Destroy, Panda ActiveScan, and McAfee Virus Scan. I allowed these programs to fix whatever they wanted, so now my first three problems are better - my desktop works. my homepage is back. and i'm no longer be redirected from certain sites.

My only problem appears to be with this icon on my taskbar that will not go away. I've tried several things to figure out the program, but it does not give any information.

Here is my HiJackThis Log -

Hi SheilaE,

Welcome to the Tomcoyote forum! I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.
HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need
your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that happens.

In order to help me help you, please observe the following while we work:
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't continue, we don't want to start all over again!
  • Understand that cleaning your computer can sometimes take multiple passes/posts,
and it's important to follow the steps as listed including re-running scans as listed
  • Please reply to this thread, do not start another.

If you can do those three things, everything should go smoothly

First from the looks of your log you are running HiJackThis.exe directly from your desktop. It should be running from inside of a folder to save backups.
Just right click on any open area on desktop screen and from menu choose > New > then Folder and name it HJT.
Now put HiJackThis.exe into that folder(HJT).
Now right-click on HijackThis.exe icon > and choose Send to > Choose Desktop( create a shortcut)
This has to be done first.
Hi SheilaE,

Your log does show infection and I will need to see an HJT uninstall list first.

Make a uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1.Start HijackThis

[external image: Posted Image]

2. Click on the Open the Misc tool section button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button

[external image: Posted Image]

4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.

You will now be presented with a screen similar to the one below:

[external image: Posted Image]

5. Click on the Save list… button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save list button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply. Note: please uncheck word wrap under format in notepad

Post HJT Uninstall list in next reply
I will also need a new HiJackThis(HJT) log to recheck
