First post here.. great forum.. very knowledgable users! Thanks for having me.

My main problem seems to be stemming from this shmjh.dll file (I think) that seems to reinstall itself and hijack my browsers home page. It also seems to install a couple of other programs while it is having it's fun. I get the occansional pop up but it seems mostly related to search pages. And I also get redirected to certain pages when addresses do not include "www" (for example this forum, I had to link through google to load the page) I ran SpyBOT S&D, cleaned all that out, AD-Awatre - cleaned that out and CWShredder - found nothing.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

This is quite a lengthy process so print this page - work through it carefully.

Do this so you can see hidden files and folders - go to Explorer>Tools>Folder Options>View, select:

>Show hidden files and folders
>Display the contents of system folders

Uncheck:

>Hide protected operating system files

Next go to Search>All files and folders>More advanced options and click.

Be sure the first three boxes are selected:

>Search System folders
>Search Hidden Files and folders
>Search SubFolders

Press Ctrl>Alt>Delete to bring up Task Manager. Click the Processes tab and double-click the Image Name column header to alphabetically sort the processes. Scroll through the list and look for the following entries, end the process on each when found:

appuf.exe
addpx.exe

Next, click Start>Run and type Services.msc, hit OK. Scroll down and find the service called "Network Security Service". When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then OK and close any open windows.

Open HijackThis, scan and when complete, remove the following entries by checking the box to the left and clicking 'fixed checked':

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank

Reboot into safe mode by tapping F8 after the BIOS has loaded, find and delete the following:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\appuf.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\addpx.exe
C:\WINDOWS\apiuq.exe

Still in Safe Mode, click Start>Run and type regedit, hit OK. Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\__NS_Service_3

If __NS_Service_3 exists, right click on it and choose delete from the menu. Still in the registry, navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY___NS_Service_3

If LEGACY___NS_Service_3 exists then right click on it and choose delete from the menu.Exit regedit and reboot in Normal Mode.

Two files (possibly three) were also deleted from your computer by this malware and need to be replaced.

control.exe - go here and download the version of control.exe for your operating system, copy it to C:\Windows\System32\.

Download the Hoster from here. Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.

If you have Spybot S&D installed you will also need to replace one file. Go here here and download SDHelper.dll. Copy the file to the folder containing you Spybot S&D program.

Could you click here to download CWShredder by Merijn Bellekom and run it, hit 'fix' as opposed to 'scan only'. If you already have CWShredder, click 'Check for update' and make sure you are running version 1.59. Reboot when done. Run HiJackThis again and post a new log in this thread.
Ok, I was bored after I posted that on Friday and tried to remove the stuff myself. I think I got it going - a much more laboured way than you suggested though. I went through and did what you said too (I didn't remove enough things with hijack this the first time).

Thank you very much.

Here is my new Log file… it seems the problems has stopped. Does everything look clean to you?

I however could not delete the

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY___NS_Service_3
from the registry.

CWShredder still found nothing.

Do this to resolve that registry entry that you had a problem with. Click here to download cwsuninst.zip. Extract cwsuninst.reg from the zip file and save it to the desktop. When done, double-click the cwsuninst.reg and when asked to merge say yes.

Reboot and you should be good to go.
Thank you much! I still can't delete that one from the registry though. I wonder I f'ed something up with my removal. Everything seems to run alright though. Whaddya think?
Probably OK. Get back to me if you have any further problems.
