Hey guys, just wanted to say thanks before hand.
I just ran the Hijack This check and here is my log file which i just saved. Ive had a problem with my home page (which i have set to blank) being taken over by some bogus search page. I have ran Ad Aware and Spybot and both have not taken care of it. I also ran CWShredder which apparently took care of the problem only temporarily.
Please help guys, im in the middle of my Finals week and need my comp to study!

Hey guys, I re-ran CWShredder in Safe Mode and got another file, CWmsconfig deleted as well…

Here is my new log, along with my Scan from CWShredder, again, thanks in advance:

Click here to download and install Registrar Lite. Install, run, copy and paste this line to reglite's address bar:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\\AppInit_DLLs

and hit the "go" tab. Find: "Appinit_Dlls" value on the right side panel, DoubleClick, copy and post here the information in the 'Value' field.
I ran Registrar Lite and double clicked on "Appinit_Dlls" and only came up with one thing in the value field:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\msci.dll

That was the only thing that came up. Did I run the check correctly?

What should be my next step?

Bumping doesn't help when there are time zone differences.

Use the Registrar Lite program. Navigate to (you can type the line directly into reglite address bar and hit 'go'):

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows

Rename the Windows key in the left pane to something else - for example:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NotWindows

(You should now be able to clear the hidden contents of the AppInit_DLLs value in the right pane without being undone by the hidden process.)

DoubleClick "Appinit_Dlls" value on right pane and erase the data on the lower box (in value field):

"C:\WINDOWS\System32\msci.dll", hit 'apply' and 'ok' to set.

Rename NotWindows back to Windows in the left pane, close Registrar Lite and reboot the computer. If all goes well the hidden process will not run at startup and you should now be able to find and *see* the msci.dll in C:\WINDOWS\System32.

Using Explorer go to your root drive: C:\ and create new folder, name it: 'Junk'. Unzip and run Winfile from here. Open it up, click File>Move…

Copy and paste this into the 'From' box: C:\WINDOWS\System32\msci.dll
Copy and paste this into the 'To' box: C:\Junk\msci.dll

Hit OK. Close Winfile and check in C:\Junk for that file - let me know what's there. If it's there, rerun CWShredder, hit 'fix' as opposed to 'scan only'. Reboot when done. Run HJT and post a new log for the final steps.
Hey, thanks for the help so far.

I followed all the above steps and now have the file in the Junk Folder.

I ran both CWShredder and HJT, but the file is still there and can't be deleted, when I tried, I got a "write protected" warning stating it couldnt be deleted.

Here is the new HJT Scan:

What should I do next!
Try this - boot into Safe Mode by tapping F8 after the BIOS has loaded. Right-click on the C:\Junk\MSAHKM.DLL go to the Security tab>advanced and take ownership giving yourself 'Full control' (preferably to Administrators 'group'). Right-click the C:\Junk folder and hit properties. Click on security tab then the advanced button. Check the box that says reset permissions on all child objects. Hit apply.

You should now be able to delete the file and folder.

Make sure that you have no browser windows open as this could prevent the fix from working properly. Open HijackThis, scan and when complete, remove the following entries by checking the box to the left and clicking 'fixed checked':

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {D848A3CA-0BFB-4DE0-BA9E-A57F0CCA1C13} - (no file)

Reboot when done, rescan with HJT and post a new log here for a final check over.
Ok, I was able to delete the Junk folder by doing what you told me, the strange thing is, when I ran HJT, the

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank

did not show up. I deleted the other three files. Also, the file in my Junk folder was msci.dll not MSAHKM.DLL that you stated in your post. Is this ok?

Also, after the HJT scan, I ran an Ad Aware scan and still came up with one file:

Vendor:Possible Browser Hijack attempt
Category:Data Miner
Object Type:RegData
Size:-
Location:Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main "Start Page" ("about:blank")
Last Activity:5-20-2004
Risk LevelMedium
Comment:Possible browser hijack attempt
Description:Possible attempt to control\redirect the browser. This object referrs to a "blacklisted" site.

This one item never seems to get deleted. I quarantined it again now and then deleted it. Is there anyway to manually delete this file, Im not able to find it in the registry. Is it hidden? Any opinions on what I should do now?

Thanks for all the help so far.
Set AAW up like this. Before scanning click on "check for updates now" to make sure you have the latest reference file. Then click the gear wheel at the top and check these options:

General> activate these: "Automatically save log-file" and "Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal"

Scanning > activate these: "Scan within archives", "Scan active processes", "Scan registry", "Deep scan registry", "Scan my IE Favorites for banned sites" and "Scan my Hosts file"

Tweaks > Scanning Engine> activate this: "Unload recognized processes during scanning."

Tweaks > Cleaning Engine: activate these: "Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion" and "Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."

Click "Proceed" to save your settings, then click "Start", make sure "Activate in-depth scan" is ticked green then scan your system. When the scan is finished, the screen will tell you if anything has been found, click "Next". The bad files will be listed, right click the pane and click "Select all objects" - this will put a check mark in the box at the side, click "Next" again and click "OK" at the prompt "# objects will be removed. Continue?".

Reboot when done.

Renaming the "Windows" key modified some security settings. Start Registrar Lite. Copy and paste the following text into the Address Bar and press 'Go':

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\\AppInit_DLLs

Right Click on the purple Windows folder in the left pane.
Select 'Properties'.
Press 'Permissions'.
Press 'Advanced'.
Remove Check Mark from 'Inherit permissions…'.
Press 'Copy'.
Highlight the group 'Everyone' (note: if this group does not exist then exit Reglite)
Select 'Remove'.
Press 'Apply' and 'OK' on all dialog boxes.

Let me know how you get on.
My Ad Aware settings were already set like that. Also, I realized that the file only gets deleted temporarily. It comes back as soon as I open Internet Explorer up again. Anyway I can delete a RegData type file manually and keep it that way, or is there some other file stopping a permanent deletion?

Also, when I started the RegLite program, there was no check mark in the "Inherit Permissions" box and really couldn't change anything since there was no setting different.

The computer seems to be clean except for that one nagging file. It doesnt seem to do anything, but AdAware picking it up everytime I open the browser as well as it being a "browser hijack" file worries me.

Open Reglite again. Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main

Right click the Start Page entry, select Properties and change the 'Value' to:

http://www.msn.com/ or whatever url you prefer.

Click Apply and OK. Then repeat for:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main and

HKEY_USERS\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main

to check that these are OK. Let me know if this resolves it.
Ok, I changed them and Ad Aware is stilll picking up this file. Could it be that the spyware was trying to set my default page to about:blank so it could run its spy search engine, but I already had it set as blank. Perhaps the computer is still picking up the about:blank page but now its not being set to that by the bug, but by me? I dont know, but the computer seems to be working fine. I dont know if this file can even do anything, besides setting my homepage to blank, which it already is. Let me know what you think I should do. Thanks for all the help.
There's nothing in your log that indicates a problem. The keys that you reset - have they remained as you set them or have they changed?
