I'm using a Dell Inspiron 600m, running Windows XP Home, Service Pack 3. This computer has been sitting with a dead battery and no RAM for about 2 years. I finally got the replacement parts I needed, but the computer is having some problems. Thing is, I wasn't very computer savvy two years ago, so I don't know if the problems are new or old. As far as I know, it is completely up to date. My dad cleaned the registry yesterday (without my permission, and without making a backup,) So that might be part of the problem, though I'm really not sure. The biggest problem I have right now is that something keeps erroring every time I try to open my anti virus, AVG Free. Something about one of the .dll files being an incorrect Windows image? I'm not sure. Anyways, here are my logs. Thanks in advance for any help! Given the possibilities, i'd be inclined to reformat and reinstall your operating system rather than try to revive it. Your PC should have a recovery partition present, so it isn't going to be that big a deal to start afresh, apart from the Windows updates that you'll have to sit through sadly.
Nope, the computer's too old for that. No recovery partition, and though I'm sure it came with a recovery disc, I have no clue where it would be. I don't have any copies of XP, or any other Windows OS, that still have a valid CD key, And since I need it to be used for a school computer, I can't use Linux (my perfered OS), or a not-so-legal copy of XP. So I have to fix it… Sorry.

So I have to fix it…

It may not be possible to do so, so don't get your hopes up. We'll start with the exact error message that Windows gives, rather than "Something about one of the .dll files being an incorrect Windows image" - it seems as good a place to start as any.
Anything is possible :-) And that's really odd… I just went to pull up AVG to type out the error message, and it popped up fine, no error… *Is very confused* I haven't changed anything, except defragmenting my computer last night… And I don't think it worked this morning. Um, ok, cross my fingers that it stays working? Any ideas on what could have changed? My computer keeps doing weird stuff like this. When I first booted it up last week, Internet explored refused to connect to the internet, even though Firefox and Pidgin connected fine. I tried everything, upgraded, removed any plugins, set it back to default settings, uninstalled and reinstalled, anything I could think of, and it wouldn't work. Then, the day after I gave up, I accidentally clicked on the wrong browser icon and IE opened up. Low and behold, it connected just fine. I don't get it. Maybe I should let it run for a few days and see if the computer is smart enough to iron out it's own problems, lol. I'm running an AVG scan right now, to see if it picks up anything. The computer is still running slow, but I'm not sure if that's because something's wrong, or just because it's old. It's using the same processor as my other computer, with more RAM, so it should be a bit faster, shouldn't it? What should I do next?

Anything is possible :-)

Spend the evening trying to bite your own forehead and then get back to me.

We'll take a look for malware and see where it gets us.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here and save it to your Desktop - unless you already have it, in which case skip to the "updating" bit below.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • Ensure a checkmark is placed next to both Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version - you'll need to clear it with your firewall.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan and then Scan.
  • When the scan has finished, click OK and then Show Results to view the results - no surprise there!
  • If MBAM finds anything, check the box(es) and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
Let me have the MBAM log, a fresh HJT log (run in Normal Mode) AND a description of how your PC is behaving.

If you don't have a copy of HijackThis:

Download a copy of HJTInstall.exe from here and save it to your Desktop
  • Double click HJTInstall.exe to begin installation.
  • Accept the installation location, which by default is C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis or click the Browse… button if you want to chose somewhere else and then click Install
  • Once HJT has installed, a shortcut will be created on your Desktop and HJT will run automatically.
  • You will need to accept the EULA, if it appears, to be able to use the tool.
  • When HJT opens, click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button.
  • When HJT has finished scanning, a window entitled "hijackthis.log" will open - when you close this window the log will be saved into the Hijackthis folder.
OK, here are the two logs. It's still running slower then anything. So far that seems to be the only problem. I tried to attach the logs, and it told me that I couldn't attach that type of file, so here they are in text.

The difficulty with speed issues is that it is hard to nail down the exact cause. The following steps will serve as a spring clean for your PC. Not all of them will be of benefit to your PC as this is a general post, but the overall effect should be positive.

1) Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove any programs that you no longer use and then reboot your PC.

2) Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune from here and save it to your Desktop.
Double click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Check the boxes to the left of:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Temporary Internet Files
Java Cache

The rest are optional - if you want to remove the lot, check "Select All".
Finally click Empty Selected. When you get the "Done Cleaning" message, click OK.

If you use the Firefox or Opera browsers, you can use this program as a quick way to tidy those up as well.

When you have finished, click on the Exit button in the Main menu.

3) Double click My Computer.
Right click the disc drive you wish to check.
Click Properties.
In the Properties dialog box, click the Tools Tab.
Under Error-checking, click the Check Now button.
In the "Check Disc Local Disk (C:)" dialog box, check both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, and then click Start.

This will look for and attempt to repair any errors that your hard drive has.

4) Defragment your hard drive. A tutorial for disc defragmentation is available here.

I happen to prefer a third-party defrag tool to the one that Windows offers. You can read about it, and find a linky, here - it's free too!

5) Download and run StartUp Inspector.
This program will help you to decide exactly what programs you disable from running at startup.
The Readme.txt file included has instructions on how to use it.

Let me know how you get on.
