Easy way to see if Windows Script is causing the problem is to uninstall it. 5.6 is the latest available for XP as far as I can see.
Also, give FireFox a try, see if it has the same problems IE has.

You could also try uninstalling IE8 which will bring IE7 back, see if that clears up the performance issues. You can always reinstall it if there is no change.
Hi Ztruker Many thanks for helping me! I managed to get the updates installed by going through the things in your post. Then I uninstalled IE8 and installed it back again. THis fixed the problems with IE I got recently. Puhh. Now I'm back to my original problem with a slow computer. Best regards Mats
Your computer should fly! 3 Ghz processor, 3 GB ram, 2x160GB hard drives. Take a look at the hard drive memory access mode as follows: Start / Run type devmgmt.msc and press Enter Expand IDE/ATAPI Controllers Double click on Primary IDE Click the Advanced Settings tab. Transfer mode should be DMA if available Current Transfer Mode should be Ultra DMA Mode 5 or 6 If it's set to PIO mode then that would make your system crawl. If it is DMA then you should consider doing a Repair Install of XP.
Hi Ztruker Many thanks for helping me! I totally agree my computer should fly! But it doesn't! It started to slow down when I installed Adobe CS3 a long time ago. Now it's worse. Primary IDE is set to DMA if available and Current Transfer Mode is Ultra DMA Mode 2. Can I change this to Mode 5 or 6 as you said? As an alternative to doing these checks I have format c: and a total reinstall of everything. Since this takes long time I avoid it. But if nothing else helps……… Best regards Mats
Ultra DMA Mode 2 is low for your system. Should be 5 or 6. There is no way you can change it though since it's set by the Operating System based on some indicators it uses, like # of errors the drive has thrown.

Some of the articles from this Google search are interesting reading: what is ultra dma mode

Instead of formatting and starting over again, though that is the most likely way to solve this, how about removing Adobe CS3, see if that makes a difference. You can reinstall it if you still use it, but check for updates or a later version first.
