Internet intermittently runs slow, with frequent "not responding errors when I try to run Internet Explorer.

I have Vista-Home.

I have PC tools anti spyware and Reg Mech. Since i have disabled all the auto updates Microsoft does, it is slightly improved.
Used to always have to go to task manager to get out of IE not resonding errors and then it would get stuck in Window update world and not let me shut off.

Thanks.

Hi pjkreuz,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. Logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Let's get a scan with a bit more information:

Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
    • DDS.scr
    • DDS.pif
  • Disable any script blocking protection (How to Disable your Security Programs)
  • Double click DDS icon to run the tool (may take up to 3 minutes to run)
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • After a few moments, attach.txt will open in a second window.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
—————————————————
  • Post the contents of the DDS.txt report in your next reply
  • Attach the Attach.txt report to your post by scroling down to the Attachments area and then clicking Browse. Browse to where you saved the file, and click Open and the click UPLOAD.

pjkreuz,

Unless there has been some unusual activity, you should be able to run java.

Download TFC to your desktop
  • Close any open windows.
  • Double click the TFC icon to run the program
  • TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run,
  • Click the Start button to begin the process.
  • Allow TFC to run uninterrupted.
  • The program should not take long to finish it's job
  • Once its finished it should automatically reboot your machine,
  • if it doesn't, manually reboot to ensure a complete clean

Then

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Running ok right now, It's like my computer has apnea. Sometimes it works ok, other times complete opposite. Freezes up randomly, won't let you shut down randomly, other times fine. I have recently, approx one month ago, pretty well wiped out everything and reinstalled OS, thinking it would help. Usually I have to reboot after an hour of use, or I really get caught in the spin zone. Could this be a memory or processory problem? Or internet connection issue? This is a desktop with cable modem, all lights functioning on modem and I am encountering no issues via router with wireless Ipod touch. Will check back much later in day. Thanks so much for you time, efforts and advice/analysis… Pjkreuz
pjkreuz,

Let's try this:

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link –> http://forums.whatthetech.com/How_Disable_…ams_t96260.html

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Forgot to uninstall malwarebytes before this report. Did not re-run it as of yet.

pjkreuz,

Mbam doesn't interfere with combofix. You did good.

This is looking less and less like a malware problem.

Let's get an online scan… and if we don't find anything we will do some housekeeping and then I'll suggest that you post in the windows forum to see if the Tech's can find something.

ESET Online Scanner:

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan. You will however need to disable your current installed Anti-Virus, how to do so can be read here.

Vista users: You will need to to right-click on the either the IE or FF icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select Run as Administrator from the context menu.

  • Please go here then click on: [external image: Posted Image]

Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.
All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox.

  • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on: [external image: Posted Image]
  • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
  • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Now click on: [external image: Posted Image]
  • The virus signature database… will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
  • When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
  • Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
  • When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
  • Now click on: [external image: Posted Image]
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.

Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!
Aha! Now maybe we are getting somewhere.
I had limewire, 2 crashes ago. Can't believe they can still pick up on those.
It didn't have me remove the files.

Please advise…
Thanks.
Below ESeT log.
Will check back after 8pm EST.

C:\Program Files\MyFunCards_3vEI\Installr\1.bin\3vEIPlug.dll a variant of Win32/Toolbar.MyWebSearch application

pjkreuz,

Those old limewire files appear to be in an old backup file and are unlikely to be the cause of your current problems. However if they were ever ran, you would get infected. Also, your funcards program will install adware if you run it so…. let's get rid of them all.

COMBOFIX-Script

  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    File::
    C:\Program Files\MyFunCards_3vEI\Installr\1.bin\3vEIPlug.dll
    C:\Program Files\MyFunCards_3vEI\Installr\setups\MyFunCardsIESetup.exe
    C:\Windows.old.000\Users\Trish\Documents\LimeWire\Saved\blue christmas elvis prestley MTV.mp3
    C:\Windows.old.000\Users\Trish\Documents\LimeWire\Saved\eh cumpari CD quality.mp3
C:\Windows.old.000\Users\Trish\Documents\LimeWire\Saved\lego star wars song HIT TOP50.mp3
  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

That being done… I'm not convinced we have made you system run any better. :(

How do things seem from your side?
I have hardly been on the computer except for checking this posting. Seems better than before  Better since I disabled all the Microsoft and pc tools. Didn't really realize I had both. Could that be the source of slow?
Below is the log from combofix. Do you think I should just watch for a few days (performance) and re-evaluate?

pjkreuz,

Running multiple AV's can definitely cause problems. More on that in the links at the end.

Let's do some housekeeping:
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK
  • Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
The above procedure will:
  • Implement some cleanup procedures.
  • Reset System Restore.

Now to remove most of the tools that we have used in fixing your machine:
  • Make sure you have an Internet Connection.
  • Download OTC to your desktop and run it
  • A list of tool components used in the cleanup of malware will be downloaded.
  • If your Firewall or Real Time protection attempts to block OTC to reach the Internet, please allow the application to do so.
  • Click Yes to begin the cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
  • You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Please re-enable any security that was disabled.

The following is my standard advice for the future. Use what you can and pat yourself on the back for what you're already doing.

Please take time to read Preventing Malware - Tools and Practices for Safe Computing. Very important information for your consideration is contained therein.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein

Also: "How to prevent malware"
by miekiemoes

Now give your system a day or so to see how things are going. Don't forget to come back and tell me.
