Hello,

I am back, this time with a problem my father has brought to me. I am not sure if this should be in this forum or another. Here is his basic problem:
He can receive mail.
He can usually send mail provided it is primarily text only.
If he tries to forward a message or create a message that includes attachments of ANY sort, over 95% of the time it does not go through.
He receives an smtp error: "Sending of message failed. this message could not be sent because connecting to the server promail.ptd.net failed. the server may be unavailable or is refusing connections. Please verify that your smpt server setting is correct and try again, or else contact you network administrator."

We have contacted the isp on numerous occasions and verified and reverified the settings. They finally said today that it is a computer related issue and that their servers are fine. They have washed their hands of the issue. So I am wondering if there is some kind of malware or rootkit or hidden virus that could do this.
His computer is an HP touchsmart 770 (original model). Running Vista and using windows mail. He had Norton as an antivirus program, but have read in forums(when problem first mainifested) that Norton can cause conflicts in Windows Mail. He worked with Norton on the phone as well. They had him uninstall but he still had the problem so they reinstalled it. I had him get rid of it and even had him try a third party mail program. He currently is trying to use Thunderbird. However, he has the same issues using Thunderbird. He would prefer to use windows mail as he is more comfortable with that program. So, I am including his HJT log to see if your techs can find something that we can't. His Malwarebytes logs come back clean.
Thank you again,
Mickey7

Hello mickey

Welcome to the Whatthetech Malware Removal Forum,

All advice given by anyone volunteering here, is taken at your own risk.
While best efforts are made to assist in removing infections safely, unexpected stuff can happen.

I have Norton Internet Security on all my systems, this one running Vista Home Premium and no issues at all with Windows Mail.

Lets check to see if there is malware causing your problems and if not than I can direct you to some windows support sites that can help you.

I cant read your HJT log the way you posted it, instructions to follow.

Download TFC to your desktop
  • Close any open windows.
  • Double click the TFC icon to run the program
  • TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run,
  • Click the Start button to begin the process.
  • Allow TFC to run uninterrupted.
  • The program should not take long to finish it's job
  • Once its finished it should automatically reboot your machine,
  • if it doesn't, manually reboot to ensure a complete clean

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
    [external image: Posted Image]
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.
Post the report and also a new HJT log please

  • Open HJT Scan and Save a Log File, it will open in Notepad
  • Go to Format and make sure Wordwrap is Unchecked
  • Go to Edit> Select All…..Edit > Copy and Paste the new log into this thread by using the Submit Reply and not start a New Thread.
DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Run TFC and Malwarebytes post the log plus a new HJT log please
Hello again Ken,

TFC cleared about 1gb of temp files.

Plus I told him to go ahead and try to keep working with Windows Mail. It will keep him less frustrated.
Thanks for the help.
Hi,

Nothing bad was picked up by Malwarebytes.

PC Hardware Manager <– is this a program you know about and use, I am not getting to much info on it?

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows including this one, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - *{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)

Lets run a free online virus scanner and if comes up clean than your problem is windows related and I can direct you to some sites that can help you as we just do malware removal on this forum

Please run this free online virus scanner from ESET
  • Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is ticked, and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic
Wow I forgot how long that scan takes. But I am rerunning it. It did not find anything but the log only shows this: ESETSmartInstaller@High as CAB hook log: OnlineScanner.ocx - registred OK Will try again.
I don't know if anything is wrong or not. I ran it 2 more times. The second time I receieved the same result as above. So I thought maybe I needed to delete the log file first before running it again. I deleted it then ran it for a third time. Here is what the log stated this time: esets_scanner_update returned -1 esets_gle=53251 That's it.
Still have issues with mail but nothing else. Could it be a weird rootkit or something like it was for me or should I try another forum for mail?
None of the scans picked up a rootkit, if you had one you would know, pop ups, pages being redirected, none of your security tools will work..

Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard, they will conflict with the TeaTimer in Spybot , you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer .

Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 3 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
