[Resolved] Computer Going Online By Itself

My computer, with Office XP, keeps going online by itself (I'm on dial-up), when its sitting idle, not on "standby". I have seen no common denominator, such as time of day or time its been sitting idle. I sometimes discover its been online for a couple hours when I've been away. Obviously, this is tieing up my phone line so I am unable to receive any phone calls. If anyone can help me with this, it would be greatly appreciated.
Hi,

This may not be malware related, it may just be a setting in your connection, but we better check to make sure.

Please do the following:

STEP #1

Please download DDS from either of these links

LINK 1
LINK 2

and save it to your desktop.
  • Disable any script blocking protection
  • Double click dds.pif to run the tool.
  • When done, two DDS.txt's will open.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
—————————————————
Please include the contents of the following in your next reply:

DDS.txt
Attach.txt.

STEP #2

[external image: Posted Image]
Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here.
  • Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
  • Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…click on NO.

    [external image: Posted Image]
    Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following …
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it in reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries
Link 1 gave me a message from my Avira anti-virus that a dangerous or unwanted file was found. I ran Link 2, but it just gave a box telling me about the program, with no way to proceed further.
Just close Avira while downloading DDS…it's just picking up on the heuristics of the program…

If it still will not download, try this program

  • Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt.
    Note:These logs can be located in the OTL. folder on you C:\ drive if they fail to open automatically.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply. You may need two posts to fit them both in.

Hi,

Please do the following:

Download TFC to your desktop
  • Close any open windows.
  • Double click the TFC icon to run the program
  • TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run,
  • Click the Start button to begin the process.
  • Allow TFC to run uninterrupted.
  • The program should not take long to finish it's job
  • Once its finished it should automatically reboot your machine,
  • if it doesn't, manually reboot to ensure a complete clean
It's normal after running TFC cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. <– very important
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

CatByte, I have been unable to get Eset to run. However, the problem may have been fixed, the computer has not gone on by itself today. I have another situation that maybe you can help with. Frequently, while going to a website, I will get the message "IE cannot display the page". If I click on the "Diagnose Connection" box shown, the website will then come up. Have you seen anything in my logs that may cause this? I have a new cable from the phone connection to the computer, even though this has been happening even before I installed the new cable. Thanks for all your help. Ron
Hi,

Your issues do not seem to be malware related.

I suggest you start a new topic in our Browsers and Internet forum. where our expert tech guru's will likely be able to resolve your problems.

Link back to this topic so they can see you are clean of malware.

There are a couple of things in your logs:

~~~~~~~~~~~~
avast! Antivirus
Avira AntiVir Personal - Free Antivirus
Having more than one antivirus can cause system instability, slowdowns and crashes, resulting in less protection, not more. Un-install one of them.
~~~~~~~~~~~

Adobe Reader 8.1.6

Your reader is out of date - Visit ADOBEand download the latest version of Acrobat Reader (version 9.1)
Having the latest updates ensures there are no security vulnerabilities in your system.

~~~~~~~~~~~
Go into your Control Panel > Add/Remove programs and remove the following program
Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
(leave Java™ version 6 update 14 in place as it is the latest version)
Catbyte, I was a little hasty in my conclusion– my computer still goes online by itself. Also, I use Avast only for a weekly scan, the rest of the time it is off. I deactivate Avira when running the Avast scan. I uninstalled the Java program. I have been unable so far to get Adobe to run, their website caused my computer to slow to 20-30 bytes per minute. (Yes, bytes per minute! A browser problem, perhaps?) Ron
