Hi everyone.

The internet on our family PC has stopped working - by stopped I mean that we can't open any webpages.

Typing a URL into either browser doesn't work - Firefox just returns a blank page and says Done at the bottom, and IE says the Address is Invalid with a http:/// in the URL bar. The funny thing is we can still ping external hosts, the e-mail program will still download e-mails, Windows Update still works (the problem arose with IE7 installed and we managed to update to IE8 which hasn't fixed the problem - also Firefox uninstall/reinstall hasn't worked) but for example SuperAntiSpyware and other programs can't update (can't connect etc). I've tried ComboFix but that won't run because the system is 64 bit. I have to add that the problem just suddenly arose, nothing out of the ordinary was done (ie, no additional anti-virus/firewall programs, the router hasn't been touched etc).

I've run Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware and CCleaner. Anti Malware did not come up with anything. I've tried that DDS script but it says the OS isn't supported. The 'gmer' program doesn't find anything either.

Please see the HijackThis log below.

Thanks for any help you may be able to provide.

DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix, Vundofix, or HijackThis fixes without supervision.

Doing so could make your pc inoperatible and could require a full reinstall of your OS, losing all your programs and data.

The issues with your computer that you list, doesn't appear to be related to Malware/Spyware/Virus but we can have a look.

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

I beleive MBAM will work with 64

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
    [external image: Posted Image]
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Please don't attach the scans / logs, use "copy/paste". .
Hi LDTate, thanks for the reply and apologies for the delay in getting the logs, I've not been home but I'll get them to you in the next few days. With regards to it not potentially not being malware, would you suggest we do this here first or shall I make a post on the other forum on this site now? I should add that I have run Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware already before I made this post and nothing was found - so the HijackThis log was done after having run the program.
Try unplugging the POWER from the router and any switches for about 10 minutes. Plug them back in, reboot the computer and try it again.
We've tried that a few times now. All other computers on the network works fine, and 'some' internet services on the affected PC works as well (ping, email etc). The main problem seems browsing..
I'm not physically near the PC until the weekend so I'll have to instruct someone on how to do it - before I do so though, is the fact that it's called winsockXPfix misleading - ie, will it work on Vista 64 bit? If not, then any alternatives?
Ok thanks for your help LDTate - managed to get it working again by resetting the TCP/IP and Winsock catalog stuff. Take care.
Since this issue appears to be resolved … this Topic has been closed. Glad we could be of assistance. If you're the topic starter, and need this topic reopened, please contact a staff member with the address of the thread. Everyone else please begin a New Topic.
