Ok, so CatByte over at Spyware Beware recommended I come here. My original thread can be found HERE.

So here's the problem:
On Saturday, I noticed that any videos or music I played would be interrupted by a rolling, ticking, slurring noise every few seconds. I also started to notice that my mouse pointer was running a bit slow, but that might just be in my head. As a side note, the sound stuttering and rolling would occasionally happen in the last few weeks, but would quickly stop. But it suddenly got unbearable this weekend.
I decided to run my AVG anti-virus. But lo and behold, it was gone. It had somehow deleted itself from my computer. Yet some of its files remained on my computer, and Windows still thought I had AVG, even though I didn't.

Well, I reinstalled it and ran it, but it found no threats. I also ran some other programs, including HijackThis, to no avail (all can be found at my old thread).

Now, by today, I think I'm going to kill myself. Everything has slowed down, including startup and going into hibernation mode. And the slurring noises during music and videos (all formats, even Windows sounds) have gotten worse.

However, CheckDisk and DiskDefragmenter are impossible for me to run. I had CheckDisk scheduled to run after I restarted the computer, but it would always stop at 15% on stage 4/5. After half an hour of it staying like that, I turned the computer off and on and decided to run Defragment. But, that won't run until I complete the "schedule" Check Disk. And, of course, I can't do that, which means neither tool is available for me to work.

Seriously, what the flying dutchman is going on? Until last week my little netbook of the last eight months was working perfectly!!!! :pullhair:

Oh, and my specs:
Acer AspireOne netbook
1GB RAM
Intel Atom Processor
Windows XP Home Edition
AVG 8.0 Anti-Virus Free Edition
Firefox with Ad-Block, NoScript, Web of Trust, and AVG add-on.

I'm switching to Linux when/if this is all fixed…..
Hi, sorry to hear of the problems with your netbook. It looks as though you may have some problems with the hard drive…………. Some thoughts for you: 1 The machine will still be under guarantee…so if you can take advantage of it, it might be worth considering this step before anything else is done. 2 Half an hour at 15% stage 4/5 with chkdsk and then forcing a close down was err……err………………… very courageous ! 3 These phases can sometimes take up to several hours to complete and it's always an absolute last resort to force a shutdown whilst still running chkdsk 4 You could consider trying the chkdsk again and let it run overnight to do see if this helps…….. (use the r switch) I.E. chkdsk /r 5 The hard drive manufacturer may have a disc utility to check/fix the usual problems on their products so you could ask a chum to download it put it on a thumb drive for you and see if this works, but check and double check (and then check it again) that the corect files have been downloaded and that they and the flash drive are free from virus or malicious elements. I would recommend you don't accept assurances on this……… but check for yourself , then check one more time just to be sure! 6 You may need to format and reinstall, so make sure your back up/copy/archive of any important stuff is 100% up to date, accurate, reproducible and kept safe on removable media. 7 Make sure you have a note of your Windows Serial Number and also the ones for any loaded programs and easy access to the executables. 8 Formatting and reinstalling on a netbook is slightly different from a conventional notebook computer so a bit of reading of the paperwork and manuals that came with the machine will be needed. 9 The Acer Recovery system usually works faultlessly and is very quick…… with he last 3 I have formatted and reinstalled (back to factory state) the whole thing has taken less than 20 minutes. Regards paws
