Hi,
Thank you for your time.
My netbook is sick. It only stays up between 1-10 minutes at a time with out locking up and forcing a need to reboot. I am unable to run Spybot or Adaware or like programs (they seem blocked). It also randomly plays snippets of music even if no applications are running at the time.
I am unable to start the computer in any sort of safe mode.
I believe I was infected with the Malware Defense virus. I was able to get around the basics of that problem by following some directions I found online but the computer is still not functioning correctly.
Let me know which log files you need to get started. Windows XP Home operating system is running on the netbook.

Hi maldini, welcome to the forum.
To make cleaning this machine easier
When running thee tools, if possible close the warnings with X. These are fake alerts generated by the malware.

Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while the scan is being performed. Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan.

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here.

Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries
Download OTL to your desktop.

To make cleaning this machine easier
- Please do not uninstall/install any programs unless asked to
It is more difficult when files/programs are appearing in/disappearing from the logs. - Please do not run any scans other than those requested
- Please follow all instructions in the order posted
- All logs/reports, etc.. must be posted in Notepad. Please ensure that word wrap is unchecked. In notepad click format, uncheck word wrap if it is checked.
- Do not attach any logs/reports, etc.. unless specifically requested to do so.
- If you have problems with or do not understand the instructions, Please ask before continuing.
- Please stay with this thread until given the All Clear. A absence of symptoms does not mean a clean machine.

When I double click GMER.exe nothing happens.
This is similar to how both ad-aware and spybot were both being blocked for me. I feel like something is already running on the computer that is blocking all scanning type programs from launching.
Should I go ahead and try OTL?

Hi
Any warning messages or errors given when attempting to run these programs?
Run this little tool then try GMER again. Even if GMER won't run try OTL.
Please download exeHelper to your desktop.
Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
Post the contents of exehelperlog.txt (Will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com, and should open at the end of the scan)
Please post the logs.
Thanks

Thanks again for the response.
1) No error or warning messages show up. Note that GMER does show up in the process list on a ctl-alt-del but with a 0 CPU usage. It just sits there doing nothing
2) I downloaded exe helper. Here is the log file
exeHelper by Raktor
Build 20091220
Run at 23:06:48 on 01/03/10
Now searching…
Checking for numerical processes…
Checking for sysguard processes…
Checking for bad processes…
Checking for bad files…
Checking for bad registry entries…
Resetting filetype association for .exe
Resetting filetype association for .com
Resetting userinit and shell values…
Resetting policies…
–Finished–
3) I ran GMER again and it has the same symptoms of doing nothing
4) I downloaded OTL and had better luck. Here are the log files

Hi maldini,
I don't see an antivirus program installed. Any reason for this?
You have a program that will need to be disabled. Please leave it disabled until we are finished.
SPYBOT TEATIMER
Next, Double click on OTL.exe
Then click the Run Fix button at the top
Next
Please read through the instructions to familarize youself with what to expect when the tool runs.
It is vitally important that combofix is renamed before it is even started to download
Please download ComboFix from Link 1
Link 2
to your Desktop.
**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.
Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
[external image: Posted Image]
Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Please post back with
Thanks

You have a program that will need to be disabled. Please leave it disabled until we are finished.
SPYBOT TEATIMER
- Launch Spybot S&D, go to the Mode menu and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected.
- On the left hand side, click on Tools, then click on the Resident Icon in the list.
- Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
- Click on the "System Startup" icon in the List
- Uncheck the "TeaTimer" box and "OK" any prompts.
- If Teatimer gives you a warning that changes were made, click the "Allow Change" box when prompted.
- Exit Spybot S&D when done.
- (When we are done, you can re-enable Teatimer using the same steps but this time place a check next to "Resident TeaTimer" and check the "TeaTimer" box in System Startup.]
Next, Double click on OTL.exe
- Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following
- Do Not copy the word CODE
- please note the fix starts with the :
:OTL O20 - AppInit_DLLs: (gezutuzo.dll) - File not found O20 - AppInit_DLLs: (c:\windows\system32\tayanage.dll) - C:\WINDOWS\System32\tayanage.dll File not found [2010/01/03 23:05:13 | 00,000,876 | —- | M] () – C:\WINDOWS\System32\krl32mainweq.dll [2010/01/03 23:04:30 | 00,000,131 | —- | M] () – C:\WINDOWS\System32\srcr.dat [2009/08/01 13:31:18 | 00,088,576 | -HS- | C] () – C:\WINDOWS\System32\herafide.dll [2009/07/31 21:20:39 | 00,086,528 | -HS- | C] () – C:\WINDOWS\System32\temorosa.dll :Commands [CREATERESTOREPOINT] [emptytemp] [Reboot]
Then click the Run Fix button at the top
- Let the program run unhindered
- Please save the resulting log to be posted in your next reply.

to your Desktop.
**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
- If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
-Tools->Options->Main tab
-Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".
- During the download, before you save it to your desktop, rename Combofix to jgh.exe
- It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
- Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
- Close any open browsers.
- Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix
———————————————————–
- Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
- Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
———————————————————–
- Double click on ComboFix.exe (jgh.exe in your case) & follow the prompts.
- As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
- Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

SPYBOT TEATIMER
- Launch Spybot S&D, go to the Mode menu and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected.
1) No reason for the lack of anti virus. I would welcome any recommendations you have once we get through this fix.
2) I am not near my computer right now (its at home), but I fear I may not be able to launch Spybot as I have mentioned. It seems to do nothing, much like GMER. Should I still continue with the other steps if I can't disable Teatimer?

Hi maldini,
Yes, if Spybot should popup with a warning, allow the changes.
maldini
I have completed the steps. Here are the two log files. So far the computer seems to be functioning correctly

Hi maldini,
This looks good. We have one more scan to do.
*Note
It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans so there are no conflicts and it will speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once the scan is finished remember to re-enable your antivirus along with your antispyware programs.
Go here to run an online scannner from
ESET
(Note: You must use Internet Explorer for this scan.)
For an antivirus program, download and install any one of these free ones.

Hi maldini,
Looks good. The detections are files we have quarantined or old System Restore points. These will be removed as part of the tools clean up.
From your desktop, please delete, if present
Next
Click the Start button, click Run. Copy and paste the following line into the run box and click OK
Combofix /uninstall
Open OTL then click the Clean Up button. You may get prompted by your firewall that OTL wants to contact the internet - allow this. A cleanup.txt will be downloaded, a message dialog will ask you if you want to proceed with the cleanup process, click Yes. This will do some clean up tasks and delete some of the tools you have downloaded plus itself.
I suggest you keep MBAM. Keep MBAM updated and use it regularly.
Updates and upgrades
You have an older version of Adobe Reader. You can download the current version HERE
You may want to consider Foxit Reader instead. It may be a bit lighter on resources.

Foxit Forum
In either case you should uninstall Adobe Reader 8.1.1 first. Be sure to move any PDF documents to another folder first though.
Some Recommendations and prevention tips
Basic security consists of 1 antivirus program, 1 resident antispyware program, 1 on demand antispyware program and a firewall. Once you get an antivirus program installed just add a firewall.
* If you are behind a router Windows firewall should be fine. Otherwise a 3rd party firewall with outbound monitoring is recommended.
Click FIREWALL for tips, reviews and links to good, free and paid for firewalls. (Note: Zone Alarm is becoming bloatware,IMO)
