I have a friends computer here that has me stumped. Their Norton subscription ran out and they tried to uninstall Norton so they could run something else. I'm really not sure what they tried, but it seems Norton didn't uninstall properly. Whatever is going on has the internet totally blocked, like no pings, no network. NIC (Network Interface Card) has been replaced and checked. Nothing seems to be going into the card, thus nothing out. Another hint could be that the Firewall won't turn on with a warning that some of the associated files are missing.

Thanks for all you do ahead of time…

Hi ehauch,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

I suggest that you download a new Anti-virus before continuing. You may have to transfer it from another computer. Don't install it yet.

Here are some free ones:
1) Antivir PersonalEditionClassic
-Free anti-virus software for Windows.
-Detects and removes more than 50,000 viruses. Free support.
2) avast! 4 Home Edition
-Anti-virus program for Windows.
-The home edition is freeware for noncommercial user
3) AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition
- Free edition of the AVG anti-virus program for Windows.
- Available for single computer use for home and non commercial use.

It is strongly recommended that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts.

You will also want to download this program:

Use the link below to see how to run the Norton Removal Tool
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen…005033108162039

After downloading Norton's tool, disconnect from the internet (unplug the cable to the router). Then run the removal tool. Then install the new Anti-Virus, then connect back to the internet and update the Anti-virus.

After you have accomplished all of that:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Then

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hi TomK - Funny you should contact me today…no less than 2 hours ago, I figured out the problem. After a long talk with the owner, I found out they were having problems with Norton AntiVirus Suite. Since I had done a lot of research, I ran across a discussion thread where someone had identical symptoms as mine. It was suggested to find and run the "Norton Removal Tool". I did that, and rebooted. Everything came alive!! :woot: The computer has been tested with a virus scan by Trend Micro and found clean. I thank you for your respnse, but it looks like I solved this one myself, and anyone else that has a similar problem…see what properly removing Norton might do for you. Eric
Since this issue appears to be resolved … this Topic has been closed. Glad we could be of assistance. If you're the topic starter, and need this topic reopened, please contact a staff member with the address of the thread. Everyone else please begin a New Topic.
