My laptop has degraded in pc performance before, and I would just rebuild it. The only problem is I'm not learning anything by just nuking my system and started from scratch! So I decided that this time I would get to the bottom of this no matter how long it took. Its been a few months now, and the performance just keeps getting worse. I've performed some of the following items thinking it would help:
  • perform check disk for disk errors
  • Performed windows system file checker
  • Modified boot file
  • Performed disk cleanup
  • Performed multiple defragmentations

I have AVG 8.0 Network Edition installed, but it finds nothing. I've rung malware bytes, and nothing. I've run CCleaner, and again, nothing. I've run Spybot and have only found "RightMedia", but have removed it. I'm fairly new to HJT, and would like to learn more about how to read and use it, however I'm not sure if as of yet what I'm looking at.

Here is the log.

Hi,

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
  • Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
  • Post that log back here.

Please download DDS and save it to your desktop.
  • Disable any script blocking protection
  • Double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done two logs should open:
  • DDS.txt
  • Attach.txt

I wasn't sure how to disable script blocking (and wasn't sure if the machine in the condition that its in even had it enabled). If this has in any way prevented the tool from working properly, can you walk me through disabling it? and I will run it again. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Hi,

OK, let's see what we can clean up. First of all, click Start >> Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs. Have a look down the list and see if you can find anything you don't use or need, and get rid of them. Something that jumped out of your HijackThis log at me was this:
Alt-Tab Task Switcher Powertoy for Windows XP
Its all fine and fair enough if you like it but just be aware that it is running on startup and running all the time.

If you don't plan on running another Panda Online Scan any time soon than this one can go:
Panda ActiveScan 2.0

The rest of the programs are up to you to decide whether you need them or not.

Next, open HijackThis. Hit Do A System Scan Only. Place a check next to the following items (if present):

Close all browsers and windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Reboot after the uninstallations and HijackThis fixes and then post a new HijackThis log. There's only so much cleaning we can do I'm afraid, and there's no Malware present. We'll see if the fresh HijackThis log shows anything else we can clean.
Alright, I have done as instructed. I got rid of a ton of programs on this laptop. Ran HJT and got rid of the items you referred to. It seems to run a little better, a little more responsive. I intend to run a a defrag and see what happens. Here is the new HJT log after all the tasks had been completed.

Your HijackThis this log looks pretty good to me. You don't have a large number of processes, not many autostarts. There's not obvious reason why you should be running much slower than anyone else.

I think you are on the right track. Keep things clean, defrag, free space when you can. I'm sure you've read/done most if not all of this before but this is the guide I usually recommend to people in your situation:
http://malwareremoval.com/tutorials/runningslowly.php
I ran a couple of defrags, and went through the documentation you provided. My laptop runs alot faster now. Thank you for all your help JP.
