Well, that'll teach me - I was using Demonoid.com earlier and started getting some rather wonky reactions from my PC - my Windows Firewall started the game by turning itself off, then IE windows started showing up all over the place. What fun, what fun! I said, and ran to my HJT, and claimed superiority by deleting and destroying prunnet… Or so I thought - it didn't take long for the fun stuff to come back, so I'm askin' for a bit o' help from the pros.

I've run HijackThis and ATF cleaner so far, and the latest HJT log is pasted here for your enjoyment… (well, not really, I guess.) I've also got Malwarebytes Anti-Malware running a scan now, but that's been running twenty-odd minutes so far and I'm not sure that'll finish in a hurry.

As always, I appreciate any help or advice you can provide.

Hi Gabriel B, welcome to the forum.

If you are still in need of help with this, please post a new HJT log.

To make cleaning this machine easier
  • Please do not uninstall/install any programs unless asked to
It is more difficult when files/programs are appearing in/disappearing from the logs.
  • Please do not run any scans other than those requested
  • Please follow all instructions in the order posted
  • All logs/reports, etc.. must be posted in Notepad. Please ensure that word wrap is unchecked. In notepad click format, uncheck word wrap if it is checked.
  • Do not attach any logs/reports, etc.. unless specifically requested to do so.
  • If you have problems with or do not understand the instructions, Please ask before continuing.
  • Please stay with this thread until given the All Clear. A absence of symptoms does not mean a clean machine.

Thanks
Oldman,

Aye aye, no more solo crusades. Here's my latest HJT log:

Hi Gabriel B,

MBam seems to have gotten some of it.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : How to Disable your Security Programs
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Next

Please make an uninstall list
  • Start HijackThis
  • Click the Config button
  • Click the Misc Tools button
  • Click the Open Uninstall Manager button.
  • Click the Save list button and save it to your desktop.
When you press Save, a notepad will open with the contents. Copy/paste the contents of the notepad file in your next reply.

Please reply back with
  • combofix log
  • uninstall list
  • new HJT log
How's the computer?

Thanks
Alright, fixin' time! (Let me just say, I had a look around Wikipedia and a couple of other places, and ComboFix impresses the hell out of me.)

Impressions - firstly, the load time was rather long, but I was half-expecting that, but aside from that things have been pretty much stable since. I had a quick browse around with all three browers (Safari, IE and Firefox), and haven't had a redirect or a pop-up yet. I note, however, my AVG still is disabled and claims there's no active components, and any attempt to update it is doomed to fail utterly..

The last bit makes me vaguely suspicious.

Alright, next steps?
Oh, couple of other things, while I remember: I'm aware that ComboFix shows that AVG was still running. As you can see, the avg service was still running from the system user, and I had no way of stopping the process, given that the AVG control tray has been disabled. Secondly, I saw the Windows Update Automatic downloader for the first time in about a week tonight. It only stuck around for a while, and as far as I could tell, it neither downloaded nor updated anything, but it was the first time I've seen it in a while. Might be nothing, but you did ask for observations, so I thought I'd add it to the info you've got to work from.
Hi Gabriel B

I note, however, my AVG still is disabled and claims there's no active components, and any attempt to update it is doomed to fail utterly

You may need to uninstall/reinstall. HJT and combofix show it as a running process.

C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgrsx.exe
C:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\avgtray.exe

Information for uninstalling and reinstalling, including a download link for a new copy (which you will need for both steps) can be found HERE

A little registry fix to do

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{d8d1e23e-0748-11dd-b366-cf351bc40cf4}]

Next you will need to create the repair registry fix, to do that , copy and paste ALL of the above text in the code box to a notepad file. (Do Not copy the word CODE) Ensure there is no space above the REGEDIT4.
Then in notepad go to FILE > SAVE AS and in the dropdown box, set the top box SAVE IN to DESKTOP
Then in the FILE NAME box type (including the " " marks), "fix.reg"

Click save.

This will create a fix.reg file on your desktop with this icon [external image: Posted Image]

To use this file you will need to right click the icon and select merge, accept the warning if it appears and you are done.

Then one more scan to see if any thing was missed.

Go here to run an online scannner from ESET:
http://www.eset.eu/online-scanner

(Note: You must use Internet Explorer for this scan.)

  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Disable your Antivirus software. You can usually do this with its Notfication Tray icon near the clock
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Unchecked, and the option "Scan unwanted applications" is Checked.
  • Click Scan.
  • Wait for the scan to finish.
  • Re-enable your Antivirus software.
  • A logfile is created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. We will need this later.
Please post back with the ESET log and a new HJT log.

Thanks
Oldman: Yes, if possible, but had a couple of extenuating circumstances over the last few days. Found a perfect apartment (been looking for ages!) so been rather busy getting paperwork and all sorts of things together, and on the same day my wireless access point decided to give up the ghost, so my main PC has been somewhat offline. Do you mind if I take another day to get things sorted? (Got a new Apple Airport on the way, yay!)
Alright, the reinstall of AVG worked, and I've done a complete system scan with the most recent updates, it found nothing. I also completed that little regfix you asked for, and finally, I tried to to the ESet scan you requested, but running it through IE refused to work. It wouldn't install the ActiveX control, even when I altered my settings within IE to "Prompt" for unsigned controls.. it still won't install when I click 'Install', and I'm not quite sure how to get around it.
Hi

ESET can be stubborn at times. We can use a different scanner, you will need to install Java for this scanner to work. The java can be uninstalled afterwards if you have no need for the program.

  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Scroll down to "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 13 (ist in the list)
  • Click the download button on the right.
If Information Bar pop-ups up, right-click on it and say it's OK to display the blocked content.
  • Select the platform (Windows, in your case), mutli language.
  • Accept the license agreement, click continue.
You do not have to install the Java Web Start ActiveX Control
  • Scroll down and click on Windows Offline Installation,
  • Save the file jre-6u13-windows-i586-p.exe to your desktop;
Do not select Run . Do not install it yet.

When the download is complete, close your browser.

  • Double-click on the saved file to install the update.
  • Delete the downloaded installation file after completing the above procedure and reboot if not prompted to do so.

You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
*Note
It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans so there are no conflicts and it will speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once the scan is finished remember to re-enable your antivirus along with your antispyware programs.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions.
  • You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
    • Mail databases
  • Click on My Computerr under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Desktop is a good place.
  • Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
Thanks
I'm still in the process of getting the Kapersky scan to complete - last time I left it going overnight and found out my computer had reset itself (along with everything else with a timer in the house, yay powercuts.)

I'll hopefully have one done tonight for posting tomorrow. In the meantime, here's a current HJT log:
