[Closed] system wakes-up when sleeping/hibernating

Hi from Spain !

A few days ago I realized that my laptop ( HP dv9710es with Windows XP SP3 ) is constantly waking-up about every 10 minutes or so when going into hibernate mode. I read somewhere that could be some malware "associated" to the winlogon process… not sure if is that, since I don't know much about the list of windows processes. Anyway, for what I read, HijackThis log was needed to study possible infections.

Another thing annoying me for a while (I believe it has been longer to this last problem), althought I'm not sure if related to this, is that CPU usage when in iddle, sometimes goes up to 50% for a while, making almost impossible to work with any application, since the system velocity drops dramatically (even the mouse move doesn't go smooth, it goes like "jumping")…

Any help would be so much appreciated… I don't want to format/reinstall the OS (since it was a real painful experience to downgrade Vista to XP). Gracias !

Hi and Welcome,

Please do the following:

STEP #1

Please download DDS and save it to your desktop.

Disable any script blocking protection
Double click dds.pif to run the tool.
When done, two DDS.txt's will open.
Save both reports to your desktop.

STEP #2

Download the GMER Rootkit Scanner. Unzip it to your Desktop.
Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while the scan is being performed. Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan.
Double-click gmer.exe. The program will begin to run.
**Caution**
These types of scans can produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries unless advised!
If possible rootkit activity is found, you will be asked if you would like to perform a full scan.

Click NO
In the right panel, you will see a bunch of boxes that have been checked … leave everything checked and ensure the Show all box is un-checked.
Now click the Scan button.
Once the scan is complete, you may receive another notice about rootkit activity.
Click OK.
GMER will produce a log. Click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "GMER.txt"
Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop.

Post the contents of GMER.txt in your next reply.

Please describe how your computer is behaving at the moment, listing any symptoms and problems that you are experiencing.

Hi,

Please do the following:

Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder

Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
Accept any prompts.
Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button.
Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.(Version 6 update 13)

NEXT

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

NEXT

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts,click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so.

NEXT
Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Accept

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
- Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
- Scan Options:
Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases
Click OK
Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
This will program will start and scan your system.
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
- Now click on the Save as Text button:
Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information in your next post.
