Possible HiJacking Here (Strange Behavior)

For the past few weeks I've noticed a "slowing down" of applications despite monthly Registry Cleanups and weekly maintenance (DeFrag, Disc CleanUp, Ad-Aware, SpyBot, CWShredder, Anti-Virus Scans, etc).
However, what really alerted me is that I have noticed my PC "turning itself on by itself and logging-on by itself WHILE IN HIBERNATION." I checked the "Windows Event Viewer" and it has log records of successfull logon attempts by parties other than myself (e.g. "Anonymous Logon", "Network Service Logon", "Local Service Logon" while I was away from the PC which was in Hibernation.)

Here's my HiJack log…appreciate any help you can offer.

Hibernation is not a very good program, I don't use it on any of my systems. You do have some malware on your computer.

First, if it will let you, to to the Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and remove C:\Program Files\Gadgetbar

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

O3 - Toolbar: Gadgetbar Toolbar - {ad8088d4-219c-40db-b16a-5e53261bed3d} - C:\Program Files\Gadgetbar\tbGad1.dll

I need to see the AVG Report and a New HJT log please.
Thanks Ken,
I followed your instructions and here is my new HJT log as you requested.

I should mention, however, that when I downloaded AVG version 7.5 I followed your exact instructions exactly to the letter. However, after performing the "Update" (by pressing "Start Update" button) and after the update was installed, I was not given an option to select "Settings" and to click "Recommended actions -> Quarantine". I was also not given an option to "Automatically generate report after every scan". I retraced my steps (the Update steps) several times to no avail.

Nevertheless, I was able to run a full complete AVG scan in the "Safemode"(it took just under 2 full hours) and the results were as follows: "Complete Test: 12-09-2006… Objects: 88,047… Threats: -0-… Errors: -0-."

Previous to this, I was also successful in deleting the particular "03" Entry and the "016" Entry (the 2 you had mentioned) per the HiJack This Utility. This tool was also successful in permanently deleting the file "Gadgetbar" (previously in C:\Program Files\Gadgetbar) as it no longer appeared while I searched for it in Safemode and never reappeared thereafter. Hence, the "Gadgetbar" is gone.

Finally, I rebooted, downloaded ATF Cleaner, and chose the "Select All" button and deleted all the temp files (this is a fast and efficient utility…and easy to use…thanks, I like it).
So, here is my new HJT log (and although I do not have a AVG Report "per se", the test result of the AVG scan was as follows:"Complete Test:12-09-2006… Objects: 88,047… Threats: -0-… Errors: -0-."

I no longer use "Hibernation". The only "quirk" I still notice is that when I do a fresh reboot, the system will hang before the final icon ("Zone Alarm") loads up. To correct this, I simply press "Control, Alt, Delete" and then "delete" the "Dr. Watson32.exe" entry in my "Task Manager / processes" and then I can work normally.
So how does my HJT log look at this point?

Thanks again Ken.
veejay :D

You can remove this with HJT.

The rest of your log looks fine

Here is a link to the Microsoft site for disabling Dr.Watson, it involves editing the Registry so you can do this at your own risk. If you do make sure to follow the instructions for backing up your registry in case there is a problem. If you don't want to proceed , I am listing some windows support sites that are better equipped to help you in that area.

Just so you know that I believe it may be around the first of the year…not sure exactly when but AVG Free Anti Virus is going to be discontinued, you will have the option to going to the paid version or uninstalling it and going elsewhere for a program. Here are two free ones if your interested. Just use one, with AV Software, more is not better.

Free Avast 4 Home Edition
Avira AntiVir® Personal Edition Classic

Also , AVG Anti Spyware is yours to keep after the trial, you will still be able to update, run scans and remove what it finds, you will just lose the background guard feature.

Here are some free programs to install, don't leave home without them
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Check for Updates and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and give you the option to deny the change.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 2.0 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
  • Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't access the internet without it.
