Hi there,

My XP Pro system takes quite a long time to boot or should I say login (getting to login page isn't as slow as longing in). I also have frequent crashes - no blue screen, just everything freezes and I have to do a hard restart. No obvious issues in event viewer etc. Sometimes when IE starts, it never displays anything other than the window outline. I kill it and try again and everything is fine (ie it rarely fails this way twice)

I've recently had odd problems with Limewire Pro and have sought help on in Limewire forums. The folks their have been great, but the limewire problem persists. It stems around the fact that one you've started a download you can't really stop it, and I think this seems to revolve around the inability of limewire to remove items from it's downloads.dat file. This has only happened in the last 8 weeks - I've used Limewire for years. The problem occurs even if I completely uninstall and shred limewire related files, and reinstall. I'm not sure if this is relevant to the overall instability and performance of the system.

I've run Sophos, AVG, Spybot, Ad-Aware and CCleaner. My system is protected by ZoneAlarmPro.

my HJT log is as follows:

I'd appreciate it if somebody could let me know if they spot any issues with the log.
Hi BMRSteve,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Did you set that 024 in HijackThis O24 - Desktop Component 0: (no name) - (no file) ? If not, please do the following :

Go to start -> control panel -> Display properties -> Desktop -> Customize Desktop… -> Web tab, then uncheck and delete everything you find in there (except for "My current home page"),

Also remove the checkmark from the the Lock Desktop Items box if it is checked.
Apply.
Apply and Exit Display properties.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Then

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Firstly Tomk, thanks very much for your help.

I've followed your instructions
- Removed the noname file
- Ran the ATF-Cleaner
- Also ran Anti-Malware (this certainly raised warnings on various protective software packages I run - eg Sophos and ZoneAlarm!!!!). Two infections were found. The log was as follows

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.36

Windows 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3

The Computer runs OK (haven't rebooted yet but didn't need to, to complete the above). The Liimewire issue remains, but as suggested originally, that might just be a "LImewire issue". The stability issue might take longer to determine - the system had crashed often before - and I'd need to run it for a few days to see if this stops. With that in mind, - I'm going to be away for a few days, so if you reply quickly you might not hear from me until roughly May 9. Thought I'd say this so you wouldn't think I'd I haven't desserted the issue! :) Thanks again.
BMRSteve,

Download Rooter.exe to your desktop

  • Then doubleclick it to start the tool
  • A Notepad file containing the report will open, also found at %systemdrive%\Rooter.txt. Post that here

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

The system seems to run Ok, but a little slow. Very slow to boot but I think you may have warned me about that.
BMRSteve,

Here are a couple of items that might help with the slow loading.
  • Please open HijackThis and run Do a system scan only
  • Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below(if present):
    • R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
      R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nwiz] nwiz.exe /install
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask.exe" -atboottime
  • Close all programs except for HijackThis.
  • Click on Fix checked
  • A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES.
  • Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.

With that completed, Log looks good :D

Cleanup

  • Double click on OTMoveIt3.exe to run it.
  • Click on CleanUp!
  • When done, you will be prompted to restart your computer. Please restart your computer.

You need to create a new Clean restore point:

Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it (something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Remove all previous Restore Points
Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

cleanmgr

You may be asked to choose drive. Choose C: At top, click on More Options tab. Click Clean up… button in the System Restore box. Click on Yes button. When finished, click on Cancel button to exit.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

The following is my standard advice for the future. Use what you can and pat yourself on the back for what you're already doing.

Please take time to read Preventing Malware - Tools and Practices for Safe Computing. Very important information for your consideration is contained therein.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein

Also: "How to prevent malware"
by miekiemoes

Please respond back that you understand the above and let me know if you have any questions. Otherwise, this thread will be closed Resolved.
OK Tomk. I'll done all the cleanup stuff, and have started to wade through all info on keeping things safe. Let's see how things go. Thanks again for all your fabulous advice
Since this issue appears to be resolved … this Topic has been closed. Glad we could be of assistance. If you're the topic starter, and need this topic reopened, please contact a staff member with the address of the thread. Everyone else please begin a New Topic.
