My Mozilla Firefox is painfully slow loading pages, sometimes taking as long as 5 minutes. Now, there are a dozen or so pop ups appearing in the tab section. I got here once before, but can't locate my copy of the instructions I was given to remove this bad stuff. Could someone please walk me through it once more. It involved working in safe mode with a Vundo fix and Combo fix program. Here is my log:

Thanks for your time. I know how busy you guys are. I know you say not to do any scans that you don't recommend, but before I got your reply and while I was waiting I went ahead and did a Kaspersky online scan. Boy, that was one long scan. Anyway, it returned 12 threats and I deleted them all. Hope this doesn't confuse things too much. Here's the log of the deleted files.

At the present time, browsing the web is still very slow, some webpages taking up to 4 minutes to load. And I get this error message from Firefox saying that it has encountered a problem and must close, which seems to happen at least once a session of browsing. Sometimes I think that this is just normal and I am being paranoid, but this condition seems to have started about the time ATT employees were talking about striking and since I use Att broadband I was kind of wondering. Anyway, once we are satisfied my machine is clear, could you recommend an optimizer or some sort of shareware to speed up my machine, or are those things just junk and not really worth the time? Anyway, thanks for your time.
Hi michael6606,

How was browsing before the infection? Are all browsers effected?

You have both Superantispyware and Windows Defender running. I suggest you have only one running at a time after we get you cleaned up.

More importantly, where is your antivirus program? Neither one of those programs are an anitivirus program, they are antispyware programs.

Windows Defender may interfer with our cleaning process. Please disable it until we are done.

  • Click Start > Programs > Windows Defender or launch from the system tray icon.
  • Click on Tools & Settings > Options.
  • Under Real-time protection options, uncheck the "Real-time protection" check box.
  • Click Save.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Security > Windows Defender, at the bottom of the Window Defenders page uncheck under Administrator Options "use Windows Defender" and then Save.
  • (When we are done, you can re-enable Defender using the same steps but this time place a check next to "Turn on real-time protection" check box.)

Let's see if we can find out more.

If you have previously downloaded combofix, please delete it from your desktop

Download a new copy from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : How to Disable your Security Programs
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Now, today when I started my Mozilla Firefox, it crashed three times before I loaded a single webpage. Then while I was browsing, it closed and gave me a crash report twice. I decided to restart my machine and while it was shutting down, it gave me a "Windows is preparing to go into Stand By" message and then froze. I gave it half an hour and then manually turned off the machine. Later, I restarted my computer to do this report and things seem to be a little better. I'm online and everything is okay. I await your next message. Thanks for the help so far.
Hi michael6606,

LimeWire
You have LimeWire, a P2P/file sharing programs installed on your computer. P2P applications like it are the largest source of malware we see. You'll be doing yourself a favor by removing it.

References for the risk of these programs can be found in these links:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/commun…protection.mspx

http://www.internetworldstats.com/articles…cles/art053.htm

I would recommend that you uninstall LimeWire, however that choice is up to you. If you choose to remove these programs, you can do so via Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs.

If you wish to keep it, please do not use it until your computer is cleaned.

I see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto-updating for the Viewpoint Manager – the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.

To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

If you use Aol products, it will reinstall if you uninstall, so I suggest you disable the update feature as outlined above.

Please go to add/remove programs and uninstall these old vulnerable versions of Java

Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
Java™ 6 Update 2
Java™ 6 Update 3
Java™ 6 Update 5
Java™ 6 Update 7

Do Not uninstall Java™ 6 Update 13

Do you get redirected, any other symptoms such as speed etc? Do you have problems with Internet Explorer?

Next, let's look deeper. Download Rooter.exe to your desktop
  • Then doubleclick it to start the tool
  • A Notepad file containing the report will open, also found at %systemdrive%\Rooter.txt (Where %systemdrive% is usually C: or the drive that you have installed Windows). Post that in your next reply.
Good evening. I have done what you asked. I can live without Limewire and I never use AOL, so I don't need Viewpoint. I also never use Internet Explorer, so I have no data on how that browser is working. My machine takes a long time to boot up, but things are much better once it gets warmed up. The issue with the screensaver going to stand by and locking up was fixed by resetting my power setting in the control panel. One of the fix programs must have reset my setting to default or something. Hi michael6606,

If you want to remove Viewpoint, go to add/remove programs and uninstall Viewpoint Media Player and then delete this folder c:\program files\Viewpoint

It would have be nice to be able to compare browsers to see if this is a FireFox specific problem.

We cleaned the caches out so it may take a few reboots to build them up again.

Let's see if we can speed up the boottime a bit. I'll give you some optional fixes. These fixes will not remove the program, just keep it from running at start up. I'll include a link so you can see what they are and possibly an alternative way of running the program.

To impliment any of these optional fixes, Open hijackthis, do a system scan only and checkmark the line(s) for the program(s) you wish to keep from running at startup, Close ALL other windows/browsers and click Fix Checked. Answer Yes if prompted.

You also have Bonjour, also known as zero-configuration networking, enables automatic discovery of computers, devices, and services on IP networks. Bonjour uses industry standard IP protocols to allow devices to automatically discover each other without the need to enter IP addresses or configure DNS servers.

If you have installed software by Apple such as iTunes or software by Adobe such as Premiere Pro, Skype, Gizmo, there could be a Bonjour folder in your Program Files. This service starts automatically and runs a process named mDNSResponder.exe which cannot be ended by Windows Task Manager.

It can be removed to free up resources without compromising system performance. It is used by ITunes for music sharing. This is a non-essential process. Disabling or enabling it is down to user preference. This program is not required to start automatically as you can start it manually if you need it.

We can have a look at this if you wish.
Well, everything seems fine except for Firefox closing three or four times a browsing session with a Sorry for the inconvenience error report. I wonder if it just a Mozilla problem. They did just update the version not too long ago. If you think there is anything we can do about that, let me know. If not, I will strive to keep my virus and maleware software up to date and let you know if anything else goes amiss…well, let whoever I get next time know…hoping there is no next time. Thanks for everything. Do I make a donation to What the Tech or HijackThis?

Doing a quick google search for that error message would indicate there may be a problem with FireFox or one of the plugins. Here's a link to some problems and solutions. At the bottom of the page you will find links to various Firefox support sites including Community-Support.

I don't see any malware present so we will remove the tools we used.

From your desktop, please delete
  • any notepads/logs that we created
  • Rooter.exe

In windows explorer, please delete this folder
c:\Rooter$

Next

Click the Start button, click Run. Copy and paste the following line into the run box and click OK
Combofix /u

I suggest you keep ATF and MBAM. Keep MBAM updated and use it regularly.

Updates and upgrades

* If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the cirtical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update

You have an older version of Adobe Reader. You can download the current version HERE

You may want to consider Foxit Reader instead. It may be a bit lighter on resources.

Visit their support forum
Foxit Forum

In either case you should uninstall Adobe Reader 8.1.2 first. Be sure to move any PDF documents to another folder first though.
