Hello there,

When I open IE it takes forever to load up a web page and it actually never fully loads.

I can get Firefox to open pages but I constantly get popups for virus removal products.

Norton found two items:
Trojan.Vundo
Bloodhound.Exploit.213

But refused to treat them unless I upgraded.

Here is my HJT log. Thanks so much for the help!

OS on this machine is Vista.

Hi virusfighter,

Please open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, and remove the following:

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
JavaT 6 Update 3

These are out of date and now a security risk, you can get the latest update (version 6 update 11) from here

The unregistered version of FlashGet serves up Ads in Internet Explorer that are downloaded from Cydoor servers. I would suggest removing it if it is this version. A safe alternative is LeechGet if you use Internet Explorer, or DownThemAll if you are a Firefox user.

————————————————————————

Backup Your Registry:
  • Download ERUNT to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As…, select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Right-click erunt.zip, choose Extract All… and follow the prompts to unzip the program
  • Open the erunt folder on your Desktop and double-click ERUNT.exe to start the program
  • OK all the prompts to back up your registry to the default location.
Note: if it is necessary to restore the registry, open the backup folder and start ERDNT.exe

————————————————————————

Please download OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As…, select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to start the program.
  • Copy the lines in the OTMoveIt script below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + B (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):
    OTMoveIt Script:

  • Close OTMoveIt3
————————————————————————

Open Notepad: press Start->Run, type notepad into the box and press OK
Select Format from the top menu and make sure Word Wrap is NOT checked.
Then, copy/paste the contents of the following code box into Notepad:
@echo off
ipconfig /all >> temp.txt
FOR /F "tokens=*" %%i IN (temp.txt) DO (
Echo. %%i | find "Physical Address" > nul
IF ERRORLEVEL 1 echo.%%i >> IPcheck.txt
)
del temp.txt
del %0
Select File and Save as
Save it to your Desktop as "runme.bat" (you MUST type the quotes)
Locate runme.bat on your Desktop and double-click it.
A black box should open and close after a short time, this is normal.
Another text file should appear on your Desktop called IPcheck.txt, do not open it until the black box has closed.

————————————————————————

Once complete, please post the OTMoveIt report, the IPcheck.txt output, the Dr Web report and a new HijackThis log.
Also, let me know how your machine is running now.
Thank you again very much.

Since the first action taken after your first reply the computer has been running much better despite later reports of viruses/trojans. I have not noticed anything that would suggest there is something wrong (except the virus scan reports of course.)

Here are the reports.

Hi virusfighter,

I'm glad to hear things are running well :) just a couple things to take care of:

Then, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following line:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

————————————————————————

It looks like your computer is connected to the internet through a wireless router or modem/router. Are you familiar with the router configuration page? You may be able to access it through this link:
http://192.168.1.254

I would like you to open the configuration page and tell me what DNS server addresses the router is set to use. They will appear as IP addresses which is four numbers separated by dots - like this:[removed]

I would also like you to confirm whether you have changed the default password on the router.

If you aren't familiar with the router setup, please post the make and model and I'll find some instructions for you.

————————————————————————

Once complete, please post a new HijackThis log and come back to me on the above.
Thanks so much yet again.

HJT process completed.

Here is the router DNS
Primary Domain Name Server: 199.185.220.36
Secondary Domain Name Server: 199.185.220.52

There is no password prompt when going to the URL you specified so I am guessing no, the default was never changed.

Here is the latest HJT log

Hi virusfighter,

Those DNS server addresses look fine :)

There is no password prompt when going to the URL you specified so I am guessing no, the default was never changed.

It's important to set a password for your router because there is malware around which attempts to access routers and change the DNS server addresses to malicious ones. Malicious DNS servers can be used for all sorts of things, from redirecting search results to almost-undetectable phishing attacks. Furthermore, if your wireless LAN is not using WPA encryption with a strong passphrase, then anyone nearby can not only access your internet connection, but also reconfigure your router.

I recommend you immediately add a strong password to your router configuration, if you need any help with this, please post the make/model and I'll try to help you with it.

————————————————————————

Please now open your AVG antivirus program and empty the 'Virus Vault' of malware.

Clean up with OTMoveIt3:
  • Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to start the program.
  • Close all other programs apart from OTMoveIt3 as this step will require a reboot
  • On the OTMoveIt3 main screen, press the CleanUp! button
  • Say Yes to the prompt and then allow the program to reboot your computer.

Please now delete rsit.exe, launch.exe and any remaining logs from your Desktop, also delete this folder:

C:\rsit

Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
If you are offererd a choice of drives, choose your system drive (normally C: )
Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up… and say Yes to the prompt
Press OK and Yes to confirm

————————————————————————

If the above went well, I think your machine is clean of malware :) here are some tips to help you keep it that way:

You have a good antivirus program installed, however I recommend you install antispyware software with real-time capabilities - this means it protects you from system changes and spyware while you are working, not just removing malware after it has been installed. There are a range of paid-for and free packages available, a free one I can recommend is Windows Defender, available here:

I recommend you install a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download programs which come laden with malware - this includes allowing websites to install browser plug-ins or ActiveX controls. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.
