Hi, I've installed a MSI KT4AV m/b into my existing system and it is say that no primary or secondary master or slave is installed when clearly it is. Can you help? I have a Seagate Baracuda 80 gig HDD 7200.11 model ST 380011a, Athlon XP 2500+ CPU and 2 sticks of Geil 512mb DDR Ram. The only error message I get says ' boot failure' insert boot disc in drive A and press any key to continue. I don't have a boot disc put put in. Many thanks Troutman :pullhair:

Greetings, Just to clarify: You changed your motherboard? If so you will need to reinstall your operating system. Does your BIOS detect your hard drive?

Does your BIOS detect your hard drive?

Yes, I have changed my motherboard, reinstalling the operating system is no problem.

The BIOS does not detect my hard drive.

Hope you can help

Are you sure your jumpers are correct? Here is a diagram:

http://www.seagate.c...;reqPage=Legacy

You want Master/slave or else Cable Select on both drives.

Also verify your cable: Blue end in motherboard / Grey middle port = slave / Black end port = Master

This appears to be your board (can you verify?):

Do you have the D bracket installed with the 4 LED POST lights?

If so do you see it pass Initializing Hard Drive Controller?

This is described in you manual on page 1-7.

Are you in IDE Channel 1? This is the upper channel.

Another thing you could try is Clear CMOS Jumper JBAT as seen on page 2-26.

But first have you entered both the Boot Menu and the BIOS to verify that the drive is not detected?

Again these options are in the manual Section 3.

The manual is downloadable here if you do not have it already:

Hi, I have the D bracket installed and stops on 4 green lights.

I am in IDE channel 1

I tried clearing the CMOS jumper on JBAT and now when I turn it on I get a 2 tone continuous beep and a message on the screen that says the CPU fan is not working and turn off immediately, but the fan is working (it's an arctic cooler fan)

I have checked both boot menu and bios and neither are detecting the HDD

I appreciate your speedy replies, thanks

Just to clarify the CMOS issue: you returned the JBAT jumper to its original configuration: correct? Was this issue resolved on subsequent starts or do we have a new issue here? As to the HDD: have you tried IDE Channel 2? Also just for reference: Is this a new board or used? Was this hard drive working OK in your old system?

I have returned the jumpers to the original config, i just turned it back on and said no to turning system off and was given 2 options the first wasto press F1 and run set up or press F2 and load default settings so I pressed F2.

I know have a screen that shows the maiin processor, some memory and display info and PCI devices with IRQ info and has not moved off this screen.

I have tried IDE 2 and had the same problem

The board is used and the HDD was working ok when last used but has been stored inside the tower in the shed for a while.
Could there be a problem with the HDD?

Well we have three suspects: 1. motherboard 2. hard drive 3. cable You could try a different cable and or hard drive just as a test. As to the current BIOS issue did you read page 2-26 on using JBAT? With the system removed from all power that jumper was to be changed briefly then returned to its original configuration before powering up again. You might try it again.

I've tried resetting the CMOS jumpers but to no avail, I'll buy some new cable tomorrow and try that if that doesn't work i'll buy a new HDD.

I appreciate your help and time

Many thanks

No problem. Glad to help. I am concerned now about your BIOS however. Are you able to start up OK and get into your BIOS Setup?

Just a quick point if it helps anybody, I have seen some BIOSes with settings where you can enable/disable IDE channels. You'll need to ensure everything is enabled and reboot once again before it will be picked up.

Did this not long ago on a customer's computer, the BIOS had been corrupted and I managed to reflash it to find no HDD detected... After enabling all IDE channels everything booted up fine once again. Sometimes it's best not to tell the customer everything... :wall:

Hi Jephree,

Yes I can start up ok and enter the BIOS.

I bought a new IDE cable today and now the DVD/CD-ROM is recognised but still not the HDD, so now I'm thinking it is the HDD.

Before I buy another one would you agree that it's likely to be the HDD?

regards

Hi Troutman,

I was just reading your manual again to see if Troy's idea regarding an IDE switch was relevant on this board and I cannot find such a "switch".

Anyway glad the BIOS is well.

Do you have the jumpers at Master / slave or are they Cable Select? If one or the other you might try the other option just to test.

Anyway It appears now that the channel is OK at least.

There are some other BIOS options you might look at under: PNP/PCI Configurations. But again all should be Default as far as I can see.

Let us know about the jumpers.
