My dad's PC runs Windows XP Home with Comcast McAfee SecurityCenter with its antivirus, firewall, etc. He ran a Spysweeper scan today and it detected Trojan-Phisher-SABanks.gen and he quarantined it. He called me and I logged on to his PC via gotomypc. I saw that antivirus was disabled and I enabled it. I had him run a McAfee scan, nothing detected. He then noticed that the antivirus had been disabled again. Could this SABanks.gen be doing nefarious things like shutting down the antivirus program or worse? Below is a hijackthis file that I ran on his PC a few moments ago. Your help is appreciated!

Hi jonwitte,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

It appears that you are running 2 Anti-virus programs. McAfee and AVG. That is not a good idea. Please uninstall one of them.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Then

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

At this point, the PC is functioning normally. I look forward to your follow-up and thanks for your help. :)
jonwitte,

  • Click Start, then Settings, then click Control Panel.
  • In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • In Add or Remove Programs, Remove speedscanpro (if found)
  • Do the same for Performance Center (if found).

  • Please open HijackThis and run Do a system scan only
  • Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below(if present):
  • Close all programs except for HijackThis.
  • Click on Fix checked
  • A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES.
  • Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.

I need you to run the following scan: Eset Online Scanner

  • Place a check mark in the box YES, I accept the Terms Of Use
  • Click the Start button.
  • Now click the Install button.
  • Click Start. The scanner engine will initialize and update.
  • Do Not place a check mark in the box beside Remove found threats.
  • Click the Scan button. The scan will now run, please be patient.
  • When the scan finishes click the Details tab.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the C:\ProgramFiles\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt into your next reply.
Tomk - I performed the steps including the Eset scan. When the scan concluded there were "no threats found" and no "Details" button to click. I found the following log.txt file in the Eset folder on drive C: that appears to have been created when the scan completed:

Hello Tomk. After a new HijackThis scan, I checked the "redclientapps.yahoo" R1 entry and clicked "Fix" but the item still appears in the subsequent scan log. Otherwise the PC seems to be functioning normally. Here's the latest log:

Thanks. - jonwitte
jonwitte,

Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point:

  • Download SysRestorePoint to your desktop and unzip it to it's own folder.
  • Double click SysRestorePoint.exe so that we can make a new system restore point.
  • A box will pop up after it has made a new point, usually after a few seconds. Close that window and exit the program.
Remove all previous Restore Points
Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

cleanmgr

At top, click on More Options tab. Click Clean up… button in the System Restore box. Click on Yes button. When finished, click on Cancel button to exit.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

The following is my standard advice for the future. Use what you can and pat yourself on the back for what you're already doing.

Please take time to read Preventing Malware - Tools and Practices for Safe Computing. Very important information for your consideration is contained therein.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein

Also: "How to prevent malware"

Please respond back that you understand the above and let me know if you have any questions. Otherwise, this thread will be closed Resolved.
Tomk, the PC is working normally - thank you! - but I am unable to install SysRestorePoint.exe due to the following message: .NET Framework Inititalization Error. To run this application, you must first install one of the following versions of the .NET Framework: v2.0.50727. Contact your applicaion publisher for instructions about obtaining the appropriate version of the .NET Framework.
The PC that I am trying to install it on is a Pentium 4 2.60Ghz PC with 1.5 Gb RAM, running Windows XP Home Edition SP3, and IE7. I successfully installed it on my PC, a Core2Duo processor with 3.5 Gb RAM, Windows XP SP2 and IE7, so perhaps the target PC is a bit too dated? Anyway, the PC you have been helping me with seems to be performing normally. Thanks! :notworthy:
jonwitte,

This will work:

Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it (something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Remove all previous Restore Points
Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

cleanmgr

Select the C: drive if asked. At top, click on More Options tab. Click Clean up… button in the System Restore box. Click on Yes button. When finished, click on Cancel button to exit.
