My computer has been acting up now for a couple months with random re boots etc. I started looking into the Event/Performance logs sections of Vista and found something a little shocking. It seems Windows is logging a lot of System errors, warnings, etc. I have pasted below just what has been logged for the past 2 weeks, the logs are very similar all the way back to December. I presume the logs stop in Dec. as this is when I installed a new motherboard and ram after the previous mb began failing after a power surge. I also installed a new video card at that time as it was initially thought to be the source of the issues I was experiencing before we determined the mb was shot. critical events is not normal. I have also pasted a DX log just in case anybody needs to see that. I do have the cpu oc'd which, according to cpuz is upped from 2.4GHz to 3.0MHz by way of the Bus Speed set to 429 with a 7 multiplier. The system info on 3D Mark'06 shows the Internal clock at 3.0GHz and the Internal Clock Max at 3.9GHz. DX says it is running at about 3.9GHz. This cpu should be fine at 3.0GHz but I'm not sure why the various readings are different. Can somebody offer any suggestions on what I may need to do about all of this? Thanks much in advance. —————— Time of this report: 3/24/2009, 21:10:49 Machine name: KEITH-PC Operating System: Windows Vista™ Home Premium (6.0, Build 6001) Service Pack 1 (6001.vistasp1_gdr.080917-1612) Language: English (Regional Setting: English) System Manufacturer: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. Ok.. First of all, if your system isn't running stable, then you certainly don't want to start overclocking your CPU until you have a stable system. So, if you really want to determine what the problem is the first thing to do is set your CPU back to its normal speed. I have overclocked a few of these E6600 CPUs myself. I take them up to around 3.0Ghz without any increase in voltage with no problems at all. However, I'm not sure why you are using 429Mhz x 7. This is way off. Its been a while since I overclocked one of these. But, its standard speed is 2.4Ghz at 1066Mhz FSB. Most motherboards will show you that the CPU speed is 266Mhz x 9 if I remember right. I usually increase this speed to 333 x 9 (1333 FSB) so that it runs at around 2997Mhz. This allows me to incrase my RAM speed to 667Mhz also and keep it linked to the CPU. If you truly have this strange bus speed/multiplier setting then it really needs to be changed. There's no way this CPU is going to run stable with a 429Mhz bus speed without a lot of tweaking, if at all. (429x7 almost sounds familiar, like something I saw on a website. Yet, it never ran stable no matter how much I tweaked timings and voltages and the CPU ran dangerously hot.) You might potentially be operating your memory at 858Mhz with those settings also, which is beyond the range of standard memory. Lastly, I had high hopes for Vista 64-bit. Thinking that finally, after all these years of 64-bit CPUs and hardware, that Microsoft finally would have made a 64-bit operating sytsem that works. But, I assure you, they have not. The hardware has far outgrown the operating system and 64-bit Windows operating systems are still so notoriously unstable they are barely useable. Everytime I think it may have changed, I see another 64-bit Windows Vista operating system that periodically and randomly blue screens at which point I reformat the hard drive with a 32-bit O/S that actually works. So, I could say with almost absolute certainty, your problem is either your 64-bit operating system (with no cure), or it is excessive overclocking on your CPU. BTW, every time I have installed a 32-bit version of Vista in place of a 64-bit version of Vista, the system has run noticeably faster, and definitely more stable. And, no matter how cheap memory gets, I still don't need more than 4 gig. :)
Thanks for the quick reply appleoddity. Obviously I am no OC Guru  . I am currently using those settings per info from the TweakTown forums. The system passed a Burn-In test and seems stable other than the occassional spontaneous re boots. I know I know, how can I call it stable if it re boots but when I say random, I mean once every couple of weeks. The cpu temps are a little high in the low 40'sC idle and low 50's under load. I just got curious last night after one of those re boots and found the Event Log info which seemed to be indicating the system was experiencing issues constantly that I was otherwise unaware of. I will certainly put the cpu back to stock settings and keep an eye on the Event Log for the next few days to see if the frequency of issues ceases or at least decreases. I honestly thought 64 bit Vista was a pretty stable OS, I was aware the XP 64 bit version was a disaster. So would you just hold out for Windows 7 release or go back with Vista 32 bit now? I wonder if MS is receptive to allowing the consumer to make that lateral move from 64 bit to 32 bit due to instability issues without having to go buy another OS? Havoc
You only have 4 gigs of RAM, (which is plenty) so you really should be running the 32-bit version of Vista. You won't notice any slow downs, and it will be much more stable. You will also have less compatibility issues with drivers and software. When you purchase a version of Vista it doesn't matter if it is 32 or 64 bit. Your key is valid for either OS. With Vista, there are only two mainstream discs available. One with 32-bit, and one with 64-bit. It no longer matters if it is retail, OEM, upgrade, etc… Your key will work with any 32-bit Vista installation disc. Now, as a side note. If you use an older Vista 32-bit disc, and it has not had SP1 put on it, then you may have trouble getting it to recognize your product key. You will have to instead install the trial version of the software (make sure you pick the right version that corresponds with the version of key that you have (i.e. premium, ultimate, etc.)), install your service packs and updates, then change the product key using the activation wizard to your legally purchased key. First try running your CPU at normal speeds for a while. I don't think any of this is related to your event log errors, and I don't think your event log errors are related to your reboots. Thats something else. However, if it was me, I wouldn't hesitate for a second to put the 32-bit version of the OS on. I've never had a 64-bit Windows operating system run smoothly for me yet. Brand new out of the box from the manufacturer these things crash. Its ridiculous.
I reset the bios to stock and just to be sure ran the IntelBurnTest which failed every time no matter what settings I used in the bios. I decided to run it with only 1 stick of ram at a time and it passed but when installed both sticks it failed again. I then just swapped the new G.Skill 1066 ram with an older 4 gig set of Corsair XMS 800. The Corsair passed the Burn test without issue. The G.Skill is apparently bad. I have not run a MemTest as I don't have the software but at this point, I'm just happy I think I have maybe resolved at least some of the issues.
Well, being that you are running the higher end G.Skill memory, you need to look up its timing and voltage settings. Memory that runs over 800Mhz requires a higher voltage a lot of times or has strange timings. If you adjust anything away from stock in the BIOS it will probably need to be the memory timing/voltages. You don't have to run the memory at its rated speed (1066) but you will have to run it at its required voltage and timings.
