The solution to this problem, as it appears is that you first need to uninstall IE8 (still too new to be a guinea pig for Microsoft), uninstall IE7, and get back to IE6.
Restore the original advpack.dll file for the actual version of Windows that you have installed.
Ok… My technician just did a malware cleanup on a computer with the same issue afterwards.
The only thing I can think of is I fairly recently started using AVG free. Could that be what caused the symptoms? If so I'm sure I can tell it to ignor that file right?
I followed all the instructions, and now internet explorer 7 is running good as new as far as I can tell.
By the way thanks Ztruker for the tutorial. That is exactly what I did. I am not sure why it didn't work the first time. I must have gotten itchy trigger fingers and made a typo.
I think I know why it didn't work the second time, however. Setting Target ISO file as C:\$autostream$\XPPROSP3.iso (i'm not sure but) I think it puts the file into the temp file it has already created and will delete it at the end of the process. If not that then it dissapeared for some other reason. I did it again and gave it a target in a file I keep for all my PC upkeep files, and it worked fine.
Thanks for all the help Appleoddity and Ztruker
Only one issue still remains
Malwarebytes still cannot update. Scans fine and works exactly how it should just cannpot update.
Since you have gone through the removal of IE8 and IE7 then reinstalled IE7, please uninstall MBAM, then reboot and install the latest version from http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php. See if that now resolves the MBAM update problem.
