My original problem is the inability to download and/or instal Adobe Flash Player. Original post here.

In trying to find a solution I tried to go to tools/ internet options. An error message popped up saying "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator."

In addition there are some small but very annoying problems, most notibly right click does not work from time to time and rarely left click will not work either. The only way I know how to get it to work again is to restart.

My windows platform is xp. I do not use add-aware or zone alarm pro anymore (my wife says it slows thing down to much). I do use AVG free now instead of symantec and default windows firewall. AVG scans nightly but doesn't find anything.

Thanks LDTate I read through that forum. I didn't find anything dealing with internet options. It seems it mostly deals with updates and modifications to reduce memory usage. I did however post on AVG Free Forum to see if there could be an issue with AVG. While I wait on that, is there anything you can think of that might have caused this? Is there a setting I can change? My 19 month old son gets on here a lot when we aren't looking. In the two seconds it takes for me to hear the keystorkes and get to him, he has done some amazing thing using only the keyboard that I could not have figured out how to do on my own. I don't believe he could have randomly done this, but perhaps there could have been options inadvertently changed by other itchy trigger fingers in the house. Thanks Amebeo
The issues with your computer that you list, doesn't appear to be related to Malware/Spyware/Virus but we can have a look.

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Uncheck "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Please don't attach the scans / logs, use "copy/paste".
I downloaded and ran ATF Cleaner everything went fine there, but…

I already had malwarebytes from a previous fix still on here. I tried to run that and got an error.
Runtime error '53'
File not found advpack.
So I think no big deal uninstall, redownload, and reinstall tray again. After uninstalling, it prompted to restart so I do and more error messages. I think these were already there.

Error 1
End program - Adobe Acrobat
The system cannot end this program because it is waiting for a response from you.

Error 2
dwwin.exe - DLL Initialization Failed
…because windows is shutting down

Error 3
Adobe Acrobat
AcroRD32.exe Applixcation error instruction at "0x5ad71531" referenced memory at "0x00000014" The memory could not "read"

Upon reboot (this one is definitely new)
Error 1
C:\Program
Windows cannot find 'C:\Program' make sure you typed the name correctly then try again
…blah blah… how to search for the file

Other than that, windows started normally

I redownloaded and tried to reinstall. I took a very long time and three tries to get setup window to pop up. Then after almost completing install I got the same runtime error around 5 to 7 times. The shortcut still installed so I tried that and got the same error. The same if I start it from the file mbam.exe

I really don't know what to do there.

Currently, with the exception of the afformentioned problems with flash player, the mouse and internet options I think everything seems to be running ok. I haven't heard any further outstanding complaints, and I have none myself.

I didn't really change anything but I'll go ahead and post a new HJT log

Thanks again

No sorry I don't have another mouse to try. On the plus side I haven't noticed that problem so much it's my wife that has had the majority of that. I haven't noticed it in around a week. She can't remember when the last time she had a problem. I haven't heard a complaint in at least several days. If that problem persist, I'll either break down and buy a new one or see if there could be a software problem (I'm not sure if it was plug -n- play) The thing I'm most concerned about is the inability to get to internet options. Not somthing I need everyday, I know, but when I need it; I need it. Ya know? I don't even know where to find an option to block or unblock that. P.S. I got a responce from the AVG Forum. They "That would not be done by AVG itself."
Click: Start > All Programs> Accessories
Open Notepad, click on Format and uncheck Word Wrap.

I'd uninstall the malwarebytes you have now and download the latest.
Run it and post back the results.
Sorry for the delayed response. I've been getting ready for mid-terms.

Word wrap on note pad is now unchecked

Still having problems with Malwarebytes. I got conflicting messages when I unistalled.

First off the unistall window seemed to freeze, then several minutes later an Error window popped up saying
Error
"File 'C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes'Anit-Malware\unins000.dat' could not be opened. Cannot unistall.
Error 32: The process cannot access the file because it is in use by another process.

Then Imediately following a new window
Malwarebytes' Antimalware was successfully removed from your computer

I don't know if that helps or not, but it is what it is I guess. It seemed to have been uninstalled.

Upon reinstall, however, setup says
C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Antimalware already exists. Would you like to install to that folder anyway?

I don't know if I should have, but I did.

Upon completion of install same old Runtime Error '53' 2 times then asks if I want to update and launch. I say yes and 2 more Runtime Error '53'. And malwarebytes does not launch, nor can I open it from the shortcut.

I'm guessing you'll say I need to make sure it is truely gone before I try to install again.

I'll have to get back to you on that. If you have any suggestions on a good way to do it let me know. I'll start with add/remove.

Add/Remove did infact remove all components except the uninstall I removed that manually. As far I as I could find there was nothing left of Malwarebytes. I downloaded again, and when finishing instalation, I got the same Runtime Error '53' Still cannot run the scan.

What about this option. advpack.dll Repair Tool

Based on what I've heard before I'm a little worried about reg fix downloads. It claims that it would work though.

Additionally… do you think this could work for internet options? Internet Options Fix
Try this first and if this doesn't work, try the HotFix from MS.

You can use windows sfc (system file checker) You'd need your XP CD to make this work.
Click Start> Run> type sfc /scannow Note the space.
(Note that there is a space between sfc and /scannow)

You can use windows sfc (system file checker) You'd need your XP CD to make this work.

This PC did not come with a windows disk. I do have an XP pro I bought years ago to upgrade an old Windows ME PC I had (2002? I think is the date on it) will that work?

Also I'm not sure is that to make sure it worked? or …

If your running XP Pro that should work. Give it a try.
OK………………..

First option ADVPACK.dll repair (AKA RegCure) requires $30 to fix  I'd rather do a total system restore with my antique xp disk than pay $30 for a RegCure that may or may not fix the problem.

Second option Internet options Hotfix the end result said something like "a newer version of this update already exist. There is no reason to install." No option to override. At least not in a way that was obviously to me.

Finally when running sfc /scannow, It prompts me it insert service pack 3 CD. Ummmmm Service pack 3 didn't exist when I bought that disk. Service pack 2 didn't even exist. So I cancelled. It was my only viable option. It then asks "Are you sure? Windows may ask for the service pack 3 disk later." God I hope not :wall:

Sooooooo……. I think I'm at a loss again. I'll continue searching, but I'm losing hope.

Perhaps I could delete windows updates, install hotfix and update again?

Perhaps I'll just try to find an advpack.dll download.

Any thoughts?
