This problem seemed to start yesterday with general slowness of loading pages online, plus a warning from ZoneAlarm that FireFox was trying to act as a server.

I have run ATFCleaner, tried to run SpyBot but it tells me the init.file is broken. I got halfway through AdAware when the computer crashed, but I did update and run Malwarebytes (no probs found). I also ran ERUNT

HiJackThis has a few entries I've never seen before (and I check it every few days, just to look for changes).

Hi MMctagg,

Sorry for the delay.

Let's see what 2 of those files are all about.

We need some file informantion
  • Make sure to use Internet Explorer for this
  • Please go to VirSCAN.org FREE on-line scan service
  • Copy and paste the following file path, one at a time into the "Suspicious files to scan" box on the top of the page:
  • make sure the scan is complete and the results are saved before you submit the next one

    C:\WINDOWS\adme.exe
    C:\Program Files\Remote\88.exe

  • Click on the Upload button
  • If a pop-up appears saying the file has been scanned already, please select the ReScan button.
  • Once the Scan is completed, click on the "Copy to Clipboard" button. This will copy the link of the report into the Clipboard.
  • Paste the contents of the Clipboard in your next reply.
Please post back with the Virus Scan results and a new HJT log.

Thanks

I see the file is still there, but VirScan.org still says file not found. When I click on 'My Computer" c: drive, I can see the file.
'Properties' says:
Type of file: Application
Description: libloader Dynamic Link Library
Version: Copyright© 2009 Beijing Rising Information Technology Co., Ltd. All Rights Reserved.
Hi MMctagg,

You probably noticed what the other file was detected as, so

Your system has been infected by one or more Backdoor Trojans.

This one can steal critical system information and contact a remote server.

I strongly suggest you do the following immediately:
  • From a clean computer, change *all* your online passwords – for email, for banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, any online forums or groups you belong to.
  • DO NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new passwords and transaction information.

Did you ever use Rising antivirus? The adme.exe file seems to be associated with it.

Let's see if we can get it to scan.

You have ERUNT installed so make a registry back up if you don't have a current one.

  • Click the Start button, then click Run.
  • In the run box, copy and paste services.msc and click OK.
  • In the window that opens locate Actives_Server right click it and select Properties
  • On the General Tab find the section titled Startup Type. Use the dropdown menu and select Disabled.
  • Click Apply, Click OK
  • Close the services window

We'll remove the other one.

It is important to allow this tool to reboot your computer when prompted.

Please download the OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

Do Not copy the word CODE note the fix starts with the :
    :Processes
    explorer.exe

    :Services
    Web_Server

    :Reg

    :Files
    C:\Program Files\Remote\88.exe

    :Commands
    [Purity]
    [emptytemp]
    [start explorer]
    [Reboot]
  • Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the "Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt3
Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

After the reboot you should be able to submit C:\WINDOWS\adme.exe to Virus Scan

Please post back with
  • OTMOVEIT3 log
  • Viru Scan results
  • new HJT log

Thanks

Hey, where'd they go? :)
Hi MMctagg, We removed one and the other one we disabled. It doesn't look like like OTMOVEIT3 rebooted your computer or else you got the log before the reboot. If there are no adverse effects we will remove the one that we disabled. How's the computer? Thanks
The computer seems much faster, and no 'strange things' - that's the technical term :) - seem to be happening. OTMOVEIT3 did reboot the computer, I don't know how I got the log before that.

Can I get rid of some other things on my machine? It's small, and needs as little stuff on it as possible.
I downloaded Adobe reader 9, but it was much too large, so I reverted to Adobe Rd 5. Rd 9 came packaged with some things that are still on my machine, according to HiJackThis.
O23 - Service: getPlus® Helper - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\NOS\bin\getPlus_HelperSvc.exe (file missing)

Same thing with this Yinst thing. I tried to get a widget, but it wouldn't run for me, so I uninstalled it. But this file stayed behind:
O16 - DPF: {30528230-99f7-4bb4-88d8-fa1d4f56a2ab} (Installation Support) - C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Common\Yinsthelper.dll

I don't know what PandaSoftware is, I think the tech guys at Staples used it. Should this file stay here:
O16 - DPF: {2D8ED06D-3C30-438B-96AE-4D110FDC1FB8} (ActiveScan 2.0 Installer Class) - http://acs.pandasoftware.com/activescan/cabs/as2stubie.cab

And Zone Alarm drives me nuts. When it does 'something' during the day - the task manager shows "vsmon" , it completely freezes my computer and I have to leave it while it runs, usually about 15 minutes. Is there something else I can use as a firewall that doesn't use so many resources?

Amanda
Hi MMctagg,

Okay that sounds good. However there is another infection. We'll remove that then I'll give you some suggestions regarding Adobe and a firewall.

You have been infected with a password stealer.

I strongly suggest you do the following immediately:
  • If you do any on line banking or credit card transaction, financial transactions, you may want to put a watch on your accounts for any unusual activity.

The o16 lines are activeX that can be removed. They will be replaced if you visit a web site that requires it. One is related to Panada online.

Open hijackthis, do a system scan only and checkmark these lines, if present

Close ALL other windows/browsers and click Fix Checked. Answer Yes if prompted. Close HJT.

We can remove that service and file as it doesn't seem to effect your computer .

Use OTMOVEIT3 again with this fix

We have a deeper look.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : How to Disable your Security Programs
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Please post back with[list[*]OTMOVEIT3 log

[*]combofix log

[*]new HJT log taken after all other steps

Thanks

Hi MMctagg,

Looks like there was more hidden there. How's the computer?

We need some file informantion
  • Make sure to use Internet Explorer for this
  • Please go to VirSCAN.org FREE on-line scan service
  • Copy and paste the following file paths, one at a time into the "Suspicious files to scan" box on the top of the page:
  • Please ensure the scan is complete and you have saved the results before submitting the next one

    c:\windows\system32\0710mi.exe
    c:\windows\system32\0710mi.dll
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\ftnet2k.sys
    c:\windows\system32\y913.exe
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\y913.sys

  • Click on the Upload button
  • If a pop-up appears saying the file has been scanned already, please select the ReScan button.
  • Once the Scan is completed, click on the "Copy to Clipboard" button. This will copy the link of the report into the Clipboard.
  • Paste the contents of the Clipboard in your next reply.

Download haxfix.exe and save it to your desktop.

  • Double click on haxfix.exe to install haxfix. (standard installation path is c:\program Files\haxfix)
  • Checkmark "Create a desktop icon"
  • Click "Next"
  • When the installation is completed, make sure that the checkmark "Launch HaxFix" is placed
  • Click "Finish"

A red "dos window" (dos box) will open with options:
1. Make logfile
2. Run auto fix
3. Run manual fix
E. Exit Haxfix

  • Select option 1. Make logfile by typing 1 and then pressing Enter
  • Haxfix will start scanning the computer. When it is finished a logfile will open: haxlog.txt
  • Copy the contents of that logfile and paste it into this thread.

Please post back with
  • Virus Scan results
  • Haxfix log

Thanks
