Hi!

I have done all the prelims on clean up - Spybot (out of and in safe mode) Ad-aware, Defender, Ewido etc. I used Prevx but it seemed to be more of a hassle than it was worth so I have removed all of it that I can get to -
I used Sysclean in Safe mode and the SMIT thing - and am stillhaving problems. I finally got the machine to work to this point so I could contact you. Have been running the hijackthis file notes on my other computer but could only ID 2 that I could be certain were bad boys. Here is what the latest hijack this reads (from the safe mode)

Hi! I am so slow in figuring where to even go on this site.... anyway. hee is the latest hijack. The computer is running better - I managed to clean out some stuff by usng another computer to google every registry key in the first hijack log. I deleted the ones I culd clearly ID as being not good. Right now I still have problems with the unit running slower than normal and crashing on the net periodically. the install shield program keeps trying to load up Norton (even though it is up and on) and will go into a load mode briefly when I open documents or try to run a different program. I have ewido on, Norton on, Spybot on. This whole problem seemed to happen when I decided I should switch to firefox. Maybe it is coincidental but after that switch (which I have reveresed) all of this started happening.

Thanks for any help.

Gary

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

You need To disable TeaTimer, it can stop our fix.

1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

OK - I also ran a scan with AVG - came up clean.

The computer is running somewhat sluggishly still. It takes a long time to open the net but has not been crashing now. I ran the clean up and it cleaned a huge number of bits. Here is the latest log from hijack

Thanks so very much for all your help.

You need to get rid of one of your anti-virus programs. Running AVG and Norton's can cause all types of problems.

It's really your call. I use the free version of Grisoft AVG myself.
Be sure to use Add/Remove Programs to uninstall which ever one you choose to remove.

Hmmm - add/remove pops up "fatal error" and won't let me uninstall. The norton folder does not have uninstall - do I just go to explore and delete it there?

How do I completely uninstall Symantec AntiVirus?
Problem: The solution to many problems with Symantec AntiVirus is to completely uninstall Symantec AntiVirus, then re-install. You can use these instructions to completely uninstall Symantec AntiVirus.

Solution: In order to completely uninstall Symantec AntiVirus and all related components you need to follow these instructions.
Note: This procedure will remove all Symantec products, not just Symantec AntiVirus.

1.Click on Start | Settings | Control Panel
2.In the control panel double-click on Add / Remove Programs
3.Look through the list of installed programs for any item that says either "Norton" or "Symantec" or "LiveUpdate". (for example "Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition" or "Norton AntiVirus 2000")
4.For each "Norton", "Symantec", or "LiveUpdate" item, select the item and click Add / Remove. Follow the instructions, and click Yes or Yes to all when prompted.
When you are done there should be no items in the list that say "Norton", "Symantec", or "LiveUpdate".
5.Click OK to close the Add / Remove Programs window.
6.Reboot your computer if it hasn't already automatically rebooted.
7.Delete the c:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus (or c:\Program Files\Norton) folder.
8.Delete the c:\Program Files\Symantec folder.
9.Delete the c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared folder.

If uninstalling Symantec AntiVirus using Add / Remove Programs does not work, you can use the directions on this Symantec website to manually remove all elements of Symantec Antivirus from your computer.
