Windows won't update

Hi Everyone, Some time ago (several months) my Toshiba Satellite Laptop stopped taking Windows updates. This first became evident when the media player stopped being able to play down loadable films from Netflix. It has also prevented me from being able to download MP3 files onto my Palm TX. When I've tried to manually retrieve updates from Windows online, it fails. Any assistance will be appreciated! P
