Before making the REGEDIT4 change, I checked for the userinit.exe file. None exists on the computer that I'm trying to restore. I did find a copy of this file on this computer and copied it to a stick for installation on the damaged installation, if you agree.
Two other items:

HJT does not seem to have rid me of this item:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [2453160d] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\tggphtjw.dll",b

Also I'm getting a start up Data Execution Prevention for the program "Run DLL as an App" I think this is the rundll32.exe program. The size of this program seems suspicious. It's like 49k on the corrupted machine and only 33k on this one.

Here is the latest HJT. Suspicious entries in bold.

Hi,

OK, copy the userinit.exe as you planned.

I am still suspicious that you may have contracted Virut, so I want to check something out. We need to get a sample from your machine though.

Please create a new .zip folder on the infected machine, with a simple password ("malware" will do). Please add a copy of the suspicious rundll32.exe as well as a copy of explorer.exe. Once all zipped up, please transfer this .zip to your USB stick and then plug this USB into a machine that has Internet access (if you haven't managed to get Internet working on the infected) and upload it here:
Bleeping Computer Submission

As long as the .zip file isn't opened (password will aid it from being accidentally opened) your clean computer will be safe. Your security programs may throw up a warning, ignore them if possible. Delete the .zip as soon as it is uploaded.

You probably want to avoid a format re-install if possible, but now that you are in a state where you could rescue any data you want it may be worth starting to back things up ready for a re-format. If this thing gets even nastier or turns out to be incurable a full wipe + re-install will be the only way forward.

Thanks.
I uploaded the zip file you requested to the site. I have Symantec AV on this computer and as you suspected, it detected W32.virut.cf. I don't know if it cleaned the zip file before transmitting to the Bleeping Computer site.
It looks like I might have been able to stop the reinfection process. It looks like by copying userinit.exe and rundll32.exe as clean from another computer, using HJT to get rid of the O4 load of "O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [2453160d] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\tggphtjw.dll",b", then going to recovery console and deleting that file i stopped the re infection. I had to use recovery console to install the correct version of rundll32.exe because windows uses it. I copied a tmp copy of the file then deleted the bad one in recovery console and renamed it. I'm now doing a repair install of windows and it's still giving me a few errors. I'm going to try a few more things by replacing suspect files with known good files. Still haven't been able to get network connection installed, but I'm getting far few installation errors than before. I'm down to a handful of files that won't install. Not sure if you have any other advice, but I'll let you know how it progresses.
I'm afraid that now we know it is indeed Virut, there is really only one piece of advice I can give you, and that would be to back up your data and format + re-install Windows. Virut attempts to infect every single executable on your system, and does it badly, corrupting the files it infects. This means that you can't disinfect them - you can only replace them like you have been doing. As soon as any one of these infected files runs again it will cause the re-infection of your system. I fear that you could go on forever replacing files and doing repair installs. The only way to ensure this computer is completely clean would be to wipe it and start from scratch. I am sorry to be the bringer of bad news - but this thing is as nasty as they come. There is no more advice I can give you, so the choice in how to proceed is yours. If you do choose to back things up, make sure you don't back up anything that is executable (.exe, .sys. .scr, .com files). If you have any more questions feel free to ask. Sorry :(
Thanks for your help. Working at getting off all the files of importance. One more question: Does this virus target mostly executables in the system32 directory? I might try to replace all those as starters.
It targets all the executables on your computer. It might not get them all the first time round but eventually it gets everything and the computer becomes unusable. AntiVirus program have been known to "attack" their own files because they have become infected - you know you have serious problems when your security programs start deleting themselves.
