This caused the machine to Blue Screen but I've managed to get back to the point where the real-time protection detects it. Attached is the High Jack This Log. Any ideas on what i should delete?

Hi,

Can you tell me where you got this?
VundoFixTool

Download ComboFix by sUBs from here or here

Note: If you already have a copy of ComboFix on your system it is essential that you delete it before downloading this copy.

**Save it to your desktop**

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts. If you are prompted to install the Recovery Console I recommend you go ahead and hit yes.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please save that log to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log

Notes:
  • Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.
  • ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
  • Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you - please let me know.
  • ComboFix disconnects your machine from the internet when it runs. This connection should be automatically restored when ComboFix completes its run. If ComboFix runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
I need to see another log from HijackThis.
  • Run Hijackthis.
  • Click on Open the Misc Tools section.
  • Next click on Open uninstall manager.
  • Press the Save list button.
  • Save the file to your desktop, with the default name of uninstall_list
  • Copy & Paste the entire contents of that file in your in your next post.
Thanks.
VundoFix: I googled Vundo and the first entry is the site that had the tool. I deleted the old ComboFix I had loaded and downloaded the linked version. I tried to launch it, but it didn't run. I have even bigger problems now. The system, in both normal and safe mode, is in a Do Loop from the logon screen. After I enter the password, it looks like it starts to log on then it logs off and goes back to the logon screen. I do have a Recovery Console loaded, but I haven't tried to do anything with it. Any ideas as to how to proceed?
Hi,

There is a legitimate program called VundoFix, but you got VundoFixTool. This looks to be latest rogue program that imitates a legitimate Malware Removal Tool.

OK, reboot your computer as if you are going into Safe Mode, but select Last Known Good Configuration, see if that lets you boot properly and log in. If this does allow you to log in, please try this method of downloading and running ComboFix.

Download Combofix from any of the links below. You must rename it before saving it. Save it to your desktop.

Double click on Combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a HijackThis log so we can continue cleaning the system.

If that doesn't work there's just a few things I need to ask before we try the Recovery Console.

Did you make an registry backup of your system with ERUNT before starting this topic?

Do you have System Restore enabled?

Do you have a Windows Installation Disk?

Thanks.
OK. Looks like this thing is really nasty. I tried to boot to Last Known Good Configuration, but I get the same symptoms as before. Do Loop. As to your other questions: I did not make a registry copy using ERUNT. System Restore was enabled before all this started, but the last time I looked at it, it appeared that the last Restore Point was on the or about the same day that this problem started. It's my daughter's computer and I'm going by what she told me happened. I do have a Windows Installation Disk for my computer system (XP Professional). I used it to recover when her computer was doing nothing more than going to Blue Screen in normal mode. At least when it was doing that, I could get the Safe Mode to start. Now that won't even work. Thanks for your continued assistance. Hopefully you can provide more insight. M
Hi,

This is definitely nasty. What method did you use to recover from your Windows CD before? Was it a repair install?

If not, I want to try that now. You will not lose any data or installed programs, we will just be re-installing the Windows System files which will hopefully allow us to boot.

OK, first insert your Windows CD and restart - boot from CD.

Windows Setup will load. When presented with the first option screen please select the option that says:
To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER
by hitting Enter. DO NOT select …Repair Windows with recovery console….

Accept the license agreement. You should now be presented with a list of installed Windows partitions. Yours should be C:\WINDOWS Windows XP Professional or something like that. Highlight this and hit the R key.

You will now be taken through what appears to be the Windows Installation process - follow the prompts from here on. This is non-destructive.

For a more detailed guide (with pictures), see here:
http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/How-to-repa…ws-XP-t138.html

After this process, if you can successfully boot please immediately try the method of downloading, renaming and running ComboFix as in my last post.

Let me know if that is any good.

Thanks.
I did another repair install as you indicated, but during the install it said it could not find / install some file. Yet i could see the files listed. It gave me a couple of warnings that certain drivers were not certified by Microsoft. I didn't get those errors last time in did the repair install. When it finally booted after "completing" the install, I got an error message that said it was doing a "Data Execution Prevention" on Windows Explorer and the only thing that shows is the wallpaper, no icons or controls. I can get a task manager dialog box to come up with a Control-Alt-Delete. I even got a Word document to launch. I may be able to save some critical documents. Is it possible that I could run Combo-Fix from a memory stick this way? After I save some critical files. any other thoughts, short of re-image? Thanks for being patient.
Hi,

Yes, try running ComboFix from a memory stick if you can.

Also, try safe-mode or safe-mode with networking. At the stage where you have just a wallpaper try starting explorer.exe manually. Open taskmgr and hit File >> New Task (Run) and type explorer.exe and hit Enter.

Let me know how its goes.

Thanks.
Ok. Managed to get a couple of key files off the harddrive. The system runs the same whether in safe-mode or normal. I tried to start explorer.exe from the task manager and it gave the same error message. Before i run Combo-Fix.exe from the stick. Do you think if i copy explorer.exe from a known good computer to the one with problems whether it would be worthwhile and not damage anything? I copied explorer.exe from this one I'm using to a stick and might be able to load it to the damaged one. I have to think about that a bit more. Sorry rambling. Or should i just go run Combo-Fix.exe
It couldn't hurt to try. I'd run ComboFix first though - it might make a difference. If not, give your plan a go. When PC-cillin was detecting viruses, did the name Virut come up at all?
I was able to load a copy of the other computer of explorer.exe and get all the icons to come up. I get a "Run DLL as an Application" error when I try to run Combo-Fix.exe. I found the installation disks for the computer and tried to do another repair install. Doesn't appear to be any different than what I was having with the other set of installation disks. I'm trying a few more things and will copy down the list of files that the install says can't be found and copied, although clearly there are files on the CD with a file of the name it's saying it can't find. I'll be back with more info in a few hours. Thanks a lot for your assistance.

In addition, when i tried the repair installation I got several errors where it said it could not find files on the installation CD. Their names were visible to me when I browsed the CD, but it wouldn't install.

Here is a sample:

SynMood.exe
Tutorial.exe
HXFSSetup.exe
MOFOCOMP.EX_
SCRCONS.EX_
WEBEMTEST.EX_
WMIADAP.EX_
WMIAPSRV.EX_
WMIC.EX_

If you need me to list the compete listing, let me know.

My look at the HJT log I think there are some suspicious entries that maybe should get fixed first. I'd like your take on that.
Hi,

Just wondering - have any of these installation disks been created from the computer's I386 folder or are they all disks that came with this or another computer, or were bought?

You can knock out these HJT entries:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [2453160d] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\tggphtjw.dll",b
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [VundoFixTool] C:\Program Files\VundoFixTool\VundoFixTool.exe -boot
O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-21-752404403-4031727625-2789567240-1006\..\Run: [VundoFixTool] C:\Program Files\VundoFixTool\VundoFixTool.exe -boot (User '?')

Check if VundoFixTool has an entry in Add/Remove Programs, if so, remove it.

Please do this:
  • Copy the contents of the Code Box below to Notepad.
  • Name the file as fix.reg
  • Change the Save as Type to All Files
  • and Save it on the desktop
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"Userinit"="C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,"
Make sure there are NO blank lines before REGEDIT4, and a blank line at the end.

Then right-click on the fix.reg file and click merge, say yes to any prompts.

Let's give another removal tool a go.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
  • Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
  • Post that log back here.
Thanks.
I will make the HJT changes that you recommend and the registry merge. I do not have network access, I suspect because of the repair installation files that could not be found. Due to that I'm not sure I can get MalwareBytes installed to run. If you concur, I think I should try another repair install to determine if the virus was interfering with it. The disks that I have used were either from a purchased XP (my computer's copy) or the disks that came with the Dell (my daughter's comp). Hopefully reinstallation will restore Internet / Network access.
