McAfee has been going haywire. I just had a big Vundo problem last week and I needed to reformat my laptop. Please help!

I haven't removed anything yet. Computer seems to be acting normally except for McAfee, which freezes everytime I try to execute it. Also, the McAfee system tray splash menu is frozen on my desktop.

Hi again Tomk. Thanks for your reply. My laptop seems to be acting normally the last couple of days, except for McAfee which still freezes on my system tray

I don't know what McAfee's problem is but I'm not seeing any malware, Vundo or otherwise. What made you think you had Vundo? Somewhere along the way, those entries that Malwarebytes' found initially got removed. Let's double check that there isn't some part of them still floating around.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
- Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
  Archives
  Mail databases
Click on My Computer under Scan.
Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
Please post this log in your next reply.

Tomk, I'm running the scan now. When I started this topic a couple nights ago, it was because my McAfee said I had 5 or 6 infected files, and one was identified as Vundo. I ended up letting Malwarebytes remove the infected files it detected the next morning. But I was still worried that Vundo could be lurking.

tombombca, Trojan.TDSS seldom goes away quietly. I'm a little surprised that you didn't find more. Maybe your security caught it.

tombombca, I'm not seeing anything. What more can you tell me about the McAfee freezing? Have you tried uninstalling and then re-installing mcAfee? Have you paid for McAfee? If you haven't, maybe you might want to try a free AV?

Great! McAfee seems to operate fine until I right-click on the icon in the system tray to bring up the functions such as scans and update 📎system_tray.JPG Then it freezes in the corner and McAfee essentially stops operating. Any attempt to restart it results in refreezing. Following this, when I right-click anywhere on the desktop to create a new file or access the properties, the small menu doesn't resolve properly. I haven't tried unistalling McAfee. It is free from my school so I'm not devoted to it or anything. In addition to McAfee, I'm running the free version of ZoneAlarm instead of the Windows Firewall, as well as Spybot, Malwarebytes and Spyware Blaster (since reformatting my laptop last week). I don't know if any of these typically conflict with McAfee

I personally don't like McAfee because I think it's a resource hog.

Three free AV's you might consider trying out are:

1) Antivir PersonalEditionClassic
-Free anti-virus software for Windows.
-Detects and removes more than 50,000 viruses. Free support.
2) avast! 4 Home Edition
-Anti-virus program for Windows.
-The home edition is freeware for noncommercial user
3) AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition
- Free edition of the AVG anti-virus program for Windows.
- Available for single computer use for home and non commercial use.

It is strongly recommended that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts.

I used to really like AVG. I don't think it's as good as it used to be and is becoming a resource hog. I currently use Avira but have installed Avast on friends computers and know people who swear by it.

If you decide to try one of these, download your choice.
Then disconnect from the internet (unplug the wire to your router).
uninstall McAfee.
Install your new AV.
Connect to the internet and update your definitions.
Go ahead and run a scan
Let me know how things are running and give me a HijackThis log.

Log looks good

You need to create a new Clean restore point.
Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it (something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Remove all previous Restore Points
Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

cleanmgr

At top, click on More Options tab. Click Clean up… button in the System Restore box. Click on Yes button. When finished, click on Cancel button to exit.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.
