The infected computer gets all the bogus warnings that your computer is infected and the results fake scan are showed. also the fake windows securtiy center window pops up saying you have no virus protection and prompting you to purchase the MS Antispyware program. how do i get rid of this? here is my hijack this log:

Hi jabrooksy,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Then

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hi Tomk. Seem to be getting better at this. I had these programs already saved to a disc so it was easy to get up and running. Performed all the tasks you asked me to do without a hitch. ms spyware alerts no longer come up. everything for the most part seems to be back to normal but of course i will let you be the final judge. here are the logs you asked for . thanks………….jim

jabrooksy,

It looks like you are running two Anti-Virus programs. McAfee and Symantec (Norton). This isn't good. Please uninstall one of them. This is important. Do not continue until you have removed one of them.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link –> http://forums.whatthetech.com/How_Disable_…ams_t96260.html

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
hello Tomk. i do not have norton on that machine anymore….at least as far as i can tell. now there is a live update component that runs with a procom terminal emulation program that we use. also i ran teh combofix program. it went through all of its procedures okay. it then restarted automatically. now however it is hung up at saying it is trying to prepare log report. once in awhile the old hourglass appears like it is trying to do something but nothing happening. it has been stuck there for better part or an hour. also have a spybot search and destroy window open in the tray but nothing on the screen. clicked it to see if something would pop up but nothing happening. what now my friend
well tomk i guess i should have waited another 10 minutes. log report finally spit out. i also ran anothe hijack this log in case you need it. i also restarted the computer to get rid of the spybot box. everything seems to be running smoothly. here are the logs:

jabrooksy,

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.
hello tomk…sorry for the delay. other pressing matters kept me from this yesterday. having trouble getting kaspersky virus scan to complete. keeps hanging up anywhere from 10-15 minutes in. it is finding infected files but then stops. i have since uninstalled mcafee thinking perhaps it was screwing up the scan thinking i could reinstall after we are threw. another wierd thing is also happening. once the kaspersky stalls, i cannot get internet explorer to connect. but if i fire up aol i can connect and use aol explorer. when i restart computer internet explorer will connect but only after spinning its wheels for about a minute. just when i thought we had this licked. oh well, what next my friend?
jabrooksy,

How long did you leave it when it hung up? The scan is going to take a couple of hours. If it hangs for over an hour, you're probably right and something isn't working correctly.

If you can't get Kaspersky to cooperate, try this other online scanner.

I need you to run the following scan: Eset Online Scanner

  • Place a check mark in the box YES, I accept the Terms Of Use
  • Click the Start button.
  • Now click the Install button.
  • Click Start. The scanner engine will initialize and update.
  • Do Not place a check mark in the box beside Remove found threats.
  • Click the Scan button. The scan will now run, please be patient.
  • When the scan finishes click the Details tab.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the C:\ProgramFiles\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt into your next reply.
well as usual tomk you were right. my last reply i did from home early this morning. last night before i left the office i left my aol account running and the kaspersky scan running through aol explorer. i showed up at the office this morning and the scan had completed. FYI it completed in 1hr 53 minutes. still could not connect using internet explorer however. i didn't restart because we were busy using our procom software (dumb terminal). here is the kaspersky log you requested: ——————————————————————————– KASPERSKY ONLINE SCANNER 7 REPORT Friday, February 27, 2009 Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (build 2600) Kaspersky Online jabrooksy, Nothing in that log to worry about. Everything quarantined. Now, what's with Internet Explorer? Is it working now that your not doing a Kaspersky scan?
sorry for the delayed response tomk. just plain forgot to respond yesterday morning bright and early. internet explorer is working again with only one small problem. upon first starting up it takes about 30 seconds to connect. once it does however everything works just fine. so unless you want me to something else i guess we can close it out. thanks in advance for the great work as usual……………………….jim
jabrooksy,

Log looks good :D

Time for some housekeeping
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK
  • Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
  • [external image: Posted Image]
The above procedure will:
  • Implement some cleanup procedures.
  • Reset System Restore.

Please re-enable any security that was disabled.

The following is my standard advice for the future. Use what you can and pat yourself on the back for what you're already doing.

Please take time to read Preventing Malware - Tools and Practices for Safe Computing. Very important information for your consideration is contained therein.

I would also suggest you read this:
