Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2
Scan saved at 9:47:05 AM, on 5/16/2009
Platform: Windows XP SP3 (WinNT 5.01.2600)
MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16791)
Boot mode: Normal

My computer has been running very slow, and recently I got a critical message on my toolbar saying I had a trojan. I ran Malware and nothing came up. Then I did a scan with PC tools Spyware Doctor. It said I had 14 infections and three Trojan.fakealerts, which were critical. I do not have the full version, so I havent been able to remove them. This is making me a little nervous, and I was hoping you guys could take care of it for me before I needed to buy the full coverage or if indeed, it was a problem. thanks alot for the look.

Hi kitzie,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Please don't edit your logs. I need to see reports just as the tool makes them. There are lines missing in your HJT log. I don't know if you accidently removed them or did it on purpose. I just need you to not modify them. Thank you.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Then

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
thanks for the look.

I installed ATF and ran it.

I updated and ran Malwarebytes and here is the log

The computer had to reboot after the first malware scan. AFter rebooting it was very slow in repopulating desktop. It does seem to be acting alright right now.
kitzie,

I need you to run the following scan: Eset Online Scanner

  • Place a check mark in the box YES, I accept the Terms Of Use
  • Click the Start button.
  • Now click the Install button.
  • Click Start. The scanner engine will initialize and update.
  • Do Not place a check mark in the box beside Remove found threats.
  • Click the Scan button. The scan will now run, please be patient.
  • When the scan finishes click the Details tab.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the C:\ProgramFiles\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt into your next reply.
I have tried to run the eset scan, but it completely stopped at 85 % with no threats detected at that time. I waited three hours, but it just froze there, not scanning another file.Nothing else would run on the computer. I had to reboot, and now I am able to surf around, but with great difficulty. I will try to run the scan overnight, and see what happens. Just wanted to let you know what was going on.
Also, when I try to open the browser, the resident shield alert opens with the following message. C\Documents and Settings\kathy weigel\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefos\Profiles\default.ufx\cookies.sqlie. Found tracking cookie Realmedia Potentially dangerous. Do you want me to heal this at this time, or what?
kitzie,

If ESET won't run, maybe we need to dig a little deeper.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link –> http://forums.whatthetech.com/How_Disable_…ams_t96260.html

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Here is the Combofix log

The computer is running very slow at this time. It seems to hang up when I am moving from site to site and loading screens.
But if it looks good, I am happy with it. I dont understand why these programs say I have all these infections though. Are they not valid then, and if so, its all good, I am gonna remove them so they dont keep making me nervous thinking something is really going on when its not. thanks for the all your help again
kitzie,

I dont understand why these programs say I have all these infections though.

I don't understand. What programs? What are they telling you is infected?
I think maybe I am just getting paranoid. I have a trial version of PC's Spyware Doctor. If I run that it comes up with 2 threats and 168 infections. Is this just a ploy to get you to buy the program, cuz if you say i'm good. then I 'm good. I see what it is doing I think. Is it picking up the quarantined items that the combo fix vaulted, and counting them? It is also showing a Catch me infection in the registry keys. I th ink I will just delete that program, what do you think? And should I remove the Combo fix now, or does it keep running or what? Sorry if this is confusing, I just want to make sure I am ok thanks again for all your trouble :)
kitzie,

Spyware Doctor is a reputable program. It won't purposefully give you false positives. After you follow the directions below, those warnings should go away. Be sure to let me know if they don't.

Log looks good :D

Time for some housekeeping
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK
  • Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
  • [external image: Posted Image]
The above procedure will:
  • Implement some cleanup procedures.
  • Reset System Restore.

Please re-enable any security that was disabled.

The following is my standard advice for the future. Use what you can and pat yourself on the back for what you're already doing.

Please take time to read Preventing Malware - Tools and Practices for Safe Computing. Very important information for your consideration is contained therein.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein

Also: "How to prevent malware"
by miekiemoes

Please respond back that you understand the above and let me know if you have any questions. Otherwise, this thread will be closed Resolved.
