actually with home and pro I have a hard time sharing files and and having the home machine recognize the pro machine. However when I bought a new webcam from creative it came with a trial program called network magic I think it was called. It was amazing no issues what so ever. Must take care of all the protocols throught the program.
Network magic is kind of fun but a little of a resource hog. Not bad. The network map is pretty cool.
I typically set up a network like you described by setting up each computer in a common workgroup. Then I assign each computer a static IP address. Works well for me. I haven't had any problems mapping drives and accessories on this type of a set up.
I'd suggest that you leave your IE without add ons. However, if you want them: Click on Tools > Internet Options > Select Programs tab > click on Manage Add Ons button and enable any you want.
I need to know that you've reformatted your C: drive so that you won't be spreading Virut to your other drive and or computers in your network.
Then we will do some housekeeping and I'll let you go.
okay had a major melt down.
Formatted c drive but could not boot to D sooooooooooooooo had to re install windows to C
okay so then still could not boot to D, something must have happened to MBR so I tried to fix through recovery councel to no avail.
So I tried to install windows again on d drive without formatting hoping it would just rewrite the mbr so I could choose my boot drive c or d in this case.
Reinstalled windows and I have lost every thing that was installed. Of course have a file folder with everything saved from previous installation. I can retrieve my data which is the most important thing. I will have to reinstall other programs that I had going which is a pain but to say the least I needed a good clean any ways.
Thanks for all your help.
Should I still need to preform some house cleaning then do inform. I have been going over some of the posts to help run at max efficiency. New to me was diabling the search indexing. What a difference that has made on its own. All the other things to clean and speed up processing time and space I was doing anyways just not as often I I should have.
I do belive my Isp if not all isp's refresh the ip address every so often so I have not figured out how to set up a static ip that will stay constant. I have tried to do this for port forwarding but was not successful had to switch back.
The IP address from your ISP is the one your router uses to to access the internet. You are correct that most people have a dynamic IP address from their ISP. You can set an IP address for the computers in you lan. This all happens on your side of the router (the internet only recognizes the IP of your router so it only "sees" one computer no matter how many are in your lan).
Let's say your routers IP address is 192.168.1.1 (a fairly common factory setting). If you set up the computers in the LAN with a common workgroup name, and IP addresses of 192.168.1.2, and 192.168.1.3, and 192.168.1.4, etc. (each have a different final number) your system will recognize that they are in the same network (because that's what doing this means). You will also need to make sure everything has the same subnet mask. Go ahead and except the default 255.255.255.0. You may have to program each of the computers to the router by entering 192.168.1.1 in the gateway box to access the internet. You can enter the same number in for DNS.
The members of the Tech Team know way more about this than I do. I just know what I've done and what worked for me. (I'm not an IT guy.) I've set up probably half a dozen networks this way and it has always worked. Biggest was 23 computers, 4 network printers, and a plotter. Smallest was only two computers but they were both laptops so I set them up as a wireless peer-to-peer (similiar but different). I learned by experimentation so your mileage may vary. I may have just been lucky. I've mixed XP home with XP pro on I believe all I've messed with.
Back to your computer. Sorry all that happened. You are correct that you should be clean. I need to stress again the dangers imposed by the Virut infection that showed on your C: drive. Any backups from there are suspect. Just one file that is contaminated with the virus can and will cause every other file you run on the computer to become infected also. Your D: drive appeared to be OK. As allways, it is best to not restore executable files. Your data files should be fine.
That just leaves me with some recommendations for the future.
The following is my standard advice for the future. Use what you can and pat yourself on the back for what you're already doing.
okay thanks for everything you can mark resolved.
I have a comment about the networking which is I set up again and that is everything runs smooth but I swear I did everything right in the past and could not get the os's to be compatible through the network. Perhaps this issue has been resolved through SP3.
I still cannot find the sys32 folder in windows folder?
It has to be there or has also changed due to SP3.
Glad your network is working. Like I said, I'm not an expert, just know what has worked for me. I hodge-podged a network together using windows95 and 98. NT was a bit easier. XP usually has worked the first time, the only exceptions I've ran into are when some firewall setting screws it up.
I'm not clear on your question.
I don't know of any sys32 folder. However you do have a system32 folder. From your log:
chucksterb17,
Your system32 folder is pretty important. Your computer won't run without it. It is one of the main places your windows operates from. You definitely have one and it showed in all of your scans just like it should.
Since this issue appears to be resolved … this Topic has been closed. Glad we could be of assistance.
