I have tried a few things to no avail, thanks in advance for any help!

Tried to locate sys32 file but is also missing or more correctly hidden. Can run the OS without sys32. Not sure what happened.

Hi chucksterb17,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

I know this looks like alot, but just take them one-at-a-time in the order given.

While TeaTimer is an excellent tool for the prevention of spyware, it can sometimes prevent HijackThis from fixing certain things.
Please disable TeaTimer for now until you are clean. TeaTimer can be re-activated once your HijackThis log is clean.

  • Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • In the Mode menu click Advanced mode if not already selected.
  • Choose Yes at the Warning prompt.
  • Expand the Tools menu.
  • Click Resident.
  • Uncheck the Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active. box.
  • In the File menu click Exit to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.

  • Please open HijackThis and run Do a system scan only
  • Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below(if present):

Please download the OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    :Processes
    explorer.exe

    :Services

    :Reg

    :Files

    C:\dam.exe

    :Commands
    [purity]

Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Then

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Okay Tomk

Thanks for the help.

I have done all as you have instructed below find the results from the logs

Pc is booting in normal mode, unlike before in selective mode as per msconfig.

Another annoying little quirk that I have not been able to address is IE runs with no add - ons re-enable option is greyed out " no access "

I am replying after first reboot and yes it was a slightly slower than normal boot.

chucksterb17,

Yeppers. I was suspicious that they weren't going to leave quietly.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link –> http://forums.whatthetech.com/How_Disable_…ams_t96260.html

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Combofix did it's thing here is the log.

  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Then

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.

In your next reply please provide:
  • Rooter report
  • ComboFix.txt
  • Kaspersky report
  • New HijackThis log taken after everything else completed

You got infected because you downloaded cracks.

The bad news is Virus.Win32.Virut is all through your stored recovery points. Therefore it is probably also on your computer, because it had to have been in order to get into your restore points. If it is on your system, you will need to reformat. There really isn't any other choice. We will know after you do the following:

Then

Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe

  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click Yes to all if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found:[external image: Posted Image]
  • If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
    [external image: Posted Image]
This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
  • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply.
I ran into trouble trying to run cure it on my non active C:\ Drive Froze each time I tried and it froze when it came to a CFScript present on that drive. D:\ Drive….. My boot drive had no problems and deleted all that was found. I have been wanting to wipe out the C drive nothing really all that important on it. I was trying to retrieve some old outlook emails and contacts but was unable to do so.

I noticed while running cureit…. A combofix file had been infected with something but on the C drive………. Interesting.

chucksterb17, We will be resetting your system restore points when we are done. Therefore, don't worry to much about what is in them right now. So, you were not able to run Dr.Web CureIt?
I tried to run on my computer as I selected both the c and d drives but it froze. The whole machine froze up twice and stalled when I came to this cfscript in the C drive. Same point both times So I ran only the D drive which is the xp boot drive and the following is the log in which I saved. A0000017.bat;D:\System Volume Information\_restore{E13AD003-5902-4267-A5E4-2DB673754C6C}\RP1;Probably BATCH.Virus;Deleted.; A0000033.EXE;D:\System Volume Information\_restore{E13AD003-5902-4267-A5E4-2DB673754C6C}\RP1;Program.PsExec.170;Deleted.; A0000090.bat;D:\System Volume Information\_restore{E13AD003-5902-4267-A5E4-2DB673754C6C}\RP1;Probably BATCH.Virus;Deleted.; A0000179.bat;D:\System Volume Information\_restore{E13AD003-5902-4267-A5E4-2DB673754C6C}\RP1;Probably BATCH.Virus;Deleted.; A0000216.bat;D:\System Volume Information\_restore{E13AD003-5902-4267-A5E4-2DB673754C6C}\RP2;Probably BATCH.Virus;Deleted.; A0000290.bat;D:\System Volume Information\_restore{E13AD003-5902-4267-A5E4-2DB673754C6C}\RP2;Probably BATCH.Virus;Deleted.; A0000364.bat;D:\System Volume Information\_restore{E13AD003-5902-4267-A5E4-2DB673754C6C}\RP3;Probably BATCH.Virus;Deleted.; I took a look at the MSCONFIG Start up and noticed that the dam, whysoez and all associated files, mal, virus what ever it was is now gone from there. My C drive as I said I can live without if I need to format. In fact I am planning to do this because I want to network with my other machine that runs xp pro. Pro and Home don't network very efficiently. I can duel boot with my choice of C "xp pro" or D " xp home" which it currently is This will give me a clean start here but it is looking as though I won't have to format the whole thing "D" Drive. This is the log report from cureit.
chucksterb17, It appears that your D: drive is OK. The Virut appears to be in your C: drive. I would recommend that you reformat that C: drive immediately. Don't try to save anything off of it. Just do a full reformat. On a separate note, I have found the XP home and Pro play real nice together in networks. The only problem I know of is if you try to set up a domain. Can't do that with home. I always just set them up with a common workgroup and haven't had any trouble. Let me know about your C: drive and give me a new HijackThis log.
thanks for the help again. Can I ask you about that MSIE issue that only starts up with no add ons? Or should I post a new thread in different forum? I should say that I don't usually use IE but to do updates you need to.
