pitstop results are at http://www.pcpitstop...?conid=23985328

in the meantime i will defrag my system even though it gets done every day pitstops saying it needs doing.

ive just done a disk clean up, its asking if i want to remove certain things and im not sure what they are: debug dump files/hibernation file cleaner/system error memory dump files/system error minidump files/per user archived windows error reporting/system archived windows error reporting....what are they and do i clear any? and what about the system restore points that are apparently taking up space that was mentioned yesterday?

You can safely remove anything Disc Cleanup recommends removing or gives you the option to remove, including System Restore points (it won't remove your latest one, just all the others cluttering up your Hard Drive space). It's a good idea to use this windows utility regularly.

Looking at your latest Overdrive results, you do seem to have a Defrag. problem and a Memory utilization problem affecting your Laptop's performance.

This is a more powerful defrag. utility worth installing and regularly useing:
Auslogics Disk Defrag.(free Version) Use 'External Mirror 1' on this page:
http://www.softpedia...load-45027.html

I think you should also download WinPatrol 19.3.2010.0 (Free Version) from here:
http://www.winpatrol.com/download.html

This is a Program Guard but it has a nifty feature that lets you see your Start-up programs with the ability to easily disable/enable them from starting up with your PC. The programs will not be removed and nor will they be stopped from being used WHEN and ONLY if they need to run. We can then consider which startup programs can be safely disabled from starting up with your Laptop and unnecessarily hogging valuable memory space which is slowing it down.
Although managing your start-up list can be done in Windows, this utility is a much safer option.

I use the professional versions of both the above programs and they are safe, a small download and easy to use.

Did you follow Doug's steps regarding Skype, as I notice it is still showing up in your Overdrive test ?

Cheers,
Lee

To remove sytem restore points except the latest one, follow the simple instructions here and Scroll down to this heading:
"Deleting system restore points in Vista: Second way" (don't use the 1st way.)
http://www.jonespc.c...nts/2008/11/25/

The Defrag. program I recommended will do a much better job than the inbuilt Vista one. It's much quicker too.
Please use it after you have removed the restore points.

Yes, let me know the start-up programs from the startup page in 'Scotty' the dog
A simple screen shot or a list.

Have you noticed an improvement in IE8 after Skype and Google toolbar removal?
If you wish to re-install Skype later after we sort everything out, I will give you a link to an earlier version of Skpye. Version 4.1 and 4.2 (the one you have been using) are known to cause problems with IE8.

Cheers,
Lee

Yes, please remove picasa 3 and my photo book.

A new PC is filled with junkware, bloatware and lots of unnecessary evils that hog memory and are often always ON. Please remove ANY accessory programs you do not use, as they are often the cause of limited memory space available and a slow PC.

Lee

The above method also works in Vista
You want to 'copy the active window' so follow those instruction in the above image (copy and pate it to somewhere handy for future use).

Save tthe screenshot to 'My pictures' or 'My Documents'.

A longish post (sorry Ztrucker) but just go to the actual upload instructions.

Your PC Memory is overloaded with a LOT of unnecessary stuff at start-up :smack: ALL of these can be safely disabled in 'Scotty' in the Start-up section: screen clipper window +s (the snip tool. If you don't use it disable it) wmpnscfg ehtray.exe msnmsgr (leave enabled if you use msn messenger a lot) toscdspd sidebar (useless, unless you particularly like and use this feature) adobe arm adobe reader speed launcher tkbellexe (belongs to realplayer but does not need to be in the start-up list) brmfcwnd groovemonitor (unless you use the 'groove' utility in windows office, disable this) camera assistant software (not needed in start-up) smoothview (a zoom tool. Disable it if you don't use it in documents etc.) igfxtray Re-boot after disabling these and run the Defrag. program you downloaded. Your PC should perform better now and your start-up times will improve too. Cheers, Lee
