no harm in putting the newer psu into it, and yes you could leave the heat sink as is(recommended) if it's not rebooting. i think yes the problem with the old pc is probably the drive failing so putting in a new drive and doing a clean install will probably fix that one.

Last night it turned off again. But the moment i pressed the power button. It went straight to the "Log in" screen. Instead of going through its normal boot process. So i am assuming that was just sleep mode. Also considering i logged in and all my settings were still saved.

Well the clean install worked successfully. The windows is booted up on my newer drive and no BSOD crashes. Nothing to note that is causing any issues. Of course my old drive is unplugged. Should i plug it back in, so i can try and get the data off of my old drive and backed up to my new drive.

yes it should be safe to plug in your old drive now and copy your data from it, just make sure in the bios boot order it's the new drive thats first in the boot order. we don't want the old drive booting first. glad everything is running ok now.

hey i have another problem. This is with my new computer so to not make things confusing. Originally i had an issue with an external drive that was networked and showing some sort of red X on my computer. This was on my older drive that i had in the computer prior. I could access the files fine, but it would not show up in the regular my computer under " hard disk drives". Well after finally formatting my computer. That issue is now resolved. Now it no longer shows as being networked to some unknown location and it shows up in the hard disk drives where its supposed to, along with all my other drives that are hooked up. How ever i did notice that its asking me to "reformat" the drive before it can be used. Now basically what its doing is turning off and on every few min or so. What i mean is it shows up in the windows drives, then disapears, then shows up again. It will continue to do that until i format the drive. It is strickly telling me and bringing up a pop up menu that says you must format this drive before it can be used. Evidently when i had my machine all messed up and i had it networked. Some how when i did a clean windows install with this new internal hard drive. It caused an issue with one of my externals loading. In any case i can access the files. the data isn't deleted or anything but how em i supposed to transfer these files off of this drive before i can format if its constantly refreshing each time. This drive also happens to me one of my big externals, 2tb drive and its completely full. There is bout 12 gb of free space. In any case i do not want to loose all this data. So what would you recommend i do in order to transfer these files over to another drive, so i can then format this one so its ready for use. These drives are not bad, there not corrupted, and there not failing or anything. I just need to some how be able to access the drive and get the files off. I can actually transfer files at a time. But when it refreshes. It of course cancels the transfer as well. I manage to do like one file each at a time, but good god that will take a very long time to do. Is there any tools or any alternative way of backing up this data and transferring it to another drive. Because i have an open drive, that its completely empty and its 2tb. I can transfer everything to it.

This "sounds like" one of two types of problems.

First
It could be a simple matter of the USB connector and/or USB port with which you are connecting the External Hard Drive.
--- Try connecting to a different USB port

Question: Have you attached several different devices via USB to this machine. (not all at one time, but in sequence)?
If so, "sometimes" a USB port gets configured to only recognize the first item connected. Attempting to connect a second USB item to that same port can result in the Error Message: device needs to be formatted....... Most often it does not need to be formated, but the configuration of the USB port needs to be cleared.
There is a straight-forward method for doing this with XP. I'll have to research a bit more to discover the proper way to do it in Win 7.

Second
The problem may reside in the External Drive "enclosure" but not the Hard Drive itself.
(USB External Drive Enclosures have a certain amount of electronic hardware that help it connect to a computer. This can break)
-- Consider Removing the Hard Drive from the USB enclosure and installing it as a second Hard Drive directly in your machine. Access or transfer your files directly.

ok once again, another issue. I swear this drive has gotten messed up ever since i reformatted my computer. This issue now is with this same "external" drive i notice i don't have access to the files. This is what it says "You don't currently have permission to access this folder, Click continue to permanently get access to this folder" So i click on it and it brings up another box that says "access denied" So then it says "to gain access to this folder you will need to use the Security Tab. So i do that and then i click continue and change the account name to my current one on my computer so i have access to the folder. It then tells me "you have just taken ownership of this object" Ok so now when i open the folder, i can finally see my data files on there. But all of them are not playing, its acting as if all the files are corrupted and i know thats not the case. Some how the drive is locking me out on every object and file that is in this drive. Do you happen to know a way to set permissions on the drive or change the settings so i can access all the content in here. There is bout 2 tb of stuff in here. I do not want to even consider thinking that its all corrupted. That can't be the case. The only thing that has changed is I reinstalled and formatted my new internal drive with a new windows install, but i did not have my external even hooked up then. Also when i try to transfer a folder over to the other drive. It says the same thing you need permission, then it says access denied and when it transfers the folder. I open it and the contents are completely empty. But yet they do show up in the original drive. I just can't open them. I happen to know this isn't a case of corruption. in any case im starting to get scared here. If i loose all this stuff, im going to be angry

sounds to me like, you managed to take ownership of the folder but not of the files inside, don't use windows but would think there's an option when you take ownership of the folder to also take ownership of everything inside it that you missed and didn't select.

yeah but do you know how? That seems bout right from what i can see. anyways. I tried adding all permissions but it still doesn't allow me to access all the video files or music files.

Could this possibly be a codec issue as well. I notice that some files play well others don't but all the folders are locked out. I have to individually set permission for each folder.
