We can see a few errors there and with Windows updates in particular,
Couple of questions if I may,
When you turn on the notebook is the correct time and date shown in the BIOS and on the Windows clock on the taskbar.
Do you get any CMOS error messages on the screen when the notebook is first powered up.
When was the last time that you checked for and installed any XP pdates.
In your previous Speccy report you had Avira AV but there is no sign of it in the MTB log, any idea as to what happened to it and how AVG 2016 AV comes to be on the computer.

Yes correct date and time on the taskbar.
Do you get any CMOS error messages on the screen when the notebook is first powered up.
None
When was the last time that you checked for and installed any XP pdates.
Likely to be a couple of years

I believe I installed way back and then it kept pestering with pop-ups to upgrade so from memory I discontinued it.

Just to be sure that we are as accurate as we can be, if you were to disconnect the AC adaptor, remove the main power brick and press the notebooks power on button for twenty seconds or so, would the Time & Date be correct in the BIOS the next time that you came to use the computer, the reason why this is important is because bad time and date settings messes up Windows updates.

To what are you referring, it was asked what had happened to Avira and how come you also had AVG on the computer, regardless of what it was that you discontinued it needed to be properly uninstalled, as to why explained in my canned info below, we can also see Malwarebytes in your MTB log.
Having more than one AV installed on your computer is bad, it will slow down the computer, cause internet connection problems and leave you with no AV protection at all if they cancel each other out as they fight for resources.
If any AV product that you have is a paid for version you should always make sure that you have a copy of the product key kept somewhere safe just in case you ever wish to reinstall it.
Please be sure to create a new system restore point first.

Just to be clear, you mean take the main adaptor out, then remove the battery.

Do the check at your leisure, when you finish with the computer for the day and then check it tomorrow for example, being left overnight would be better.
AC adaptor disconnected from the notebook, remove the main power brick/battery, press the notebooks power on button to get rid of any residual charge in the system.

To avoid us repeating ourselves and something potentially being overlooked, can I ask that you answer any questions as they are asked, thanks.

Ok I will give this in the correct order as best I can (longish)
Along the way my wifes iphone and the TV stopped connecting to the internet as I know even less on that side (never watch TV) she phoned Virgin and pushed them to have a look, they messed for nearly an hour trying to claim a loose cable and doing resets and reboots but eventually wife got her connections back, but no reason why.
So tried this netbook and still no joy.
I then uninstalled Avira / Malware and AVG as best I could as I couldn’t get in to safe mode, it started then stalled.
Tried netbook again …no joy.
Then using msconfig tried some options and nearly lost it, I put back to where it was and then kept getting an Asus issue and recommend a shutdown, so then done a system restore back to June (forgot to do one before uninstalls), that got me up and running again with no internet connection.
Unplugged AC unit, removed battery for a few hours.…date & time stamps still correct when restarted.
Tried internet again….no joy.
Looked again at wireless connections not really knowing what I am looking for but double checked the passwords etc.
Done another reboot, must be about 15 by now.
5 minutes later I get a connection.
I have shut down and rebooted 3 times and it still connects now to the internet. Left for another couple of hours tried again and it is still connecting ok.
It looks like whatever the issue was it is now resolved.
It is frustrating not knowing what the issue was but I am suspicious the phone call to Virgin fixed something although it was a couple of hours after that before the netbook connected.

Glad you got it sorted and thank you for letting us know scudo
Be sure to create a new system restore point for the now stable settings and pat yourself on the back for fixing this rather than Virgin, I suspect that you have fixed this yourself with your persistence, well done
