Thanks. But can someone confirm it that motherboard would work? They come on Ebay very rarely it seems, so I would need to buy it now even if I don't install it immediately. It sounds like a good upgrade too. As I said, ever since messing with the ram and unplugging the 2nd hard drive, most of the problems are gone. I am now getting random crashes approx 1 per week or every other week, so this is going to become increasingly longer and harder to test. Hence I don't want to miss any opportunities for parts on Ebay and saving money+time. I have ordered a thermal paste kit and going to return this psu, and order a new one, either the corsair or a new version of my original. Maybe I can't change the speed of this fan, but I know some fans vary their speed based on temperature, even my old Win power one did this.

if these are the 2 motherboards,
http://www.asus.com/...#specifications
http://uk.asus.com/M...#specifications

the best i can say is maybe, they both have the same chipsets, but your motherboard(P5VD2-MX) is a microatx so if your case is a micro atx case too, then it won't fit because the P5VD2-MX SE is an atx motherboard which is bigger. :- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MicroATX

if your case is a microatx case it also means the power supply i listed might not fit, and you may need a smaller microatx psu.

but I know some fans vary their speed based on temperature, even my old Win power one did this.

yes that's true but it's all controlled from inside the psu itself, so there's nothing you can manually set to change the way they work.

Okay, I'm back with an update. I ordered a brand new clone of my current power supply, new power cord and thermal paste etc. I had some interesting results. I didn't do anything with the thermal paste to start with, just tested the power supplies. When I initially swapped the new power supply over, it cut out after 30 mins, and then subsequently kept cutting out quickly after that. I tested this for a couple days swapping back and forth with the old power supply which still worked, same results each time. Then I removed the heatsink and looked at the old thermal paste (or lack of it). There was literally just a dry flat smudge mark there.... no real paste or anything. So I applied the new thermal paste and put the heat sink back on, then put the new power supply in..... and I haven't had a single PSU power cut from this new PSU in 4-5 days since! So the new Thermal Paste i applied directly fixed this power cutting problem it seems. But what I'd like to know is, how did the original old PSU manage to survive with little/no thermal paste, and still very few power cuts? Seems it was even more stable than this new PSU? However, I still get a "overclock fail/ post interupted" screen at start up, which you have to press F1 through like this IMG_5077_stuck_on_bootup.jpg Your thoughts would be appreciated please.

Anyone got any ideas how to get rid of this issue, and should I reinstall in the OS after all this crashing or leave it as is?

Okay update again. Still problems! The new clone PSU box that I bought was slightly louder than the old one it seemed....... so although things were working fine...... I wanted to put the old one back in to be sure it was the quietest one, and also double check that it was purely a thermal paste problem. Seems it's not just a thermal paste problem! Things seemed fine for a few days, and the the startup screen error as per above disappeared to begin with when I put the old PSU back in, but now the system has started crashing again randomly on all types of pages. So I'm going to swap the PSU back for the new one soon, and do another 1-2 week test, see if there are any more crashes. If there are, then the problem must be something else surely? I refuse to give up! B)
