Adding additional Drivers and/or application and updates on-top of an operating system that is not functioning properly is not usually a good idea, because the new features are most likely going to inherit the old/existing problems.

I do wish you had a second machine available to download the Drivers and Antivirus to CD for easier transfer to your freshly formated and installed operating system. But you should be fine navigating only to the sites linked below for Drivers and AntiVirus.

In my opinion, the best way to get this particular machine running properly is to
  • completely wipe/format the hard drive
  • Install XP SP2 from original Microsoft or manufacturer CD
  • manually configure your dial-up connection
  • Install Drivers from fresh download from manufacturer's site
  • ****Audio - Realtek AC'97 Audio Driver Update
  • ****Graphics - Via/S3G UniChrome IGP Driver Update
  • ****Spring 2004 Original Chipset Driver Collection
  • Avira Antivirus

Here's the link for your Drivers:
http://h10025.www1.h...r...539&lang=en
Here's the link for your free Avira Antivirus download:
http://download.cnet...cdlPid=11012914

After accomplishing the above, you will have some use of the machine, but not all of your familiar applications and utilities.
It won't initially seem to be as much fun and versatile, but we are establishing a base machine from which you can build back the applications that you like to use.

You will be able to access the internet and get a general sense of how the machine is functioning.
You will not yet have ability to watch streaming content, nor interact with gaming and such.
But I would not want the machine to be doing so at this time anyway.

Post back here when you have the above accomplished.
I will then give you a link and instructions for a thorough machine and system performance measure.

Best Regards

Once your machine is restored to best working order, you can download and burn to CD - Active Kill Disk. Then you can Run Active Kill Disk against the External HD, running the entire process from CD. You will also need to run Flash Drive Disinfector, also run from CD. One step at a time, we can deal with the external HD after you have a secure and functional machine. Best Regards

Thanks for posting your progress. Ordinarily the Chipset Drivers should follow directly after XP SP2, and the video graphics driver, and then audio and other drivers. Then Antivirus. In your case, we had to insert Dial-up configuration, earlier in the sequence to give you internet access to download the Drivers.

Very good.

Next thing you will need is JAVA Runtime Environment

Please go here: http://java.sun.com/...loads/index.jsp

Download and install: JRE 6 Update 17

Reboot your machine.

Next open Internet Explorer

Go to: http://www.pcpitstop.com
Select: Full Test

Register here:
You will be required to register by creating a username and password.

Accept the ActiveX component (allow it to be installed) to allow your machine to run the Full Tests
(takes about 5 minutes for Full Tests.)
Answer the questions at the end of the test,
or
simply scroll down to the "Go" button to view your results.

When viewing the first page of your Results (Recommended Fixes) please copy the URL (internet address)
It will look something like this: http://www.pcpitstop...?conid=21778332

Open a new tab or fresh instance of IE, to navigate back here to this thread at WTT.

Post the URL (internet address) which you just copied, into your next reply to this Topic.

I'll help you review the Results.
We will then have a much better ability to understand your machine's current functioning.
I'll be better prepared to provide informed recommendations to you.

Best Regards

No need to upgrade to IE 8 at this time. I presume you are running IE 7 ? Go back and give it another try. Thanks

Good Work! All of your hardware is functioning in good range of performance. Don't fret about any more Driver Updates at this time. Drivers are always being updated for one reason or another, and hardly ever benefit, unless your machine happens to have the exact problem that the update was designed to fix. Rule of Thumb with Drivers (and other things too) -- "If it ain't broke, don't be fixin' on it." :) OK It's time to run your MS Native Disk Cleaner. Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disk CleanUP (do not select "Compress old files) Do select to empty *Recycle Bin *Temporary files *Temporary Internet Files _____________________________________ Once Disk CleanUp has done its work, Reboot your machine into SAFE Mode In SAFE Mode - use your MS native Disk Defragment tool. Run it twice - the second one will obviously go faster but will still pick up a few files _____________________________________ Once you've completed the Defrag, reboot back into Normal Mode Run a fresh PCPitstop Full Tests Post the new link to the fresh Results. _____________________________________ There are some additional steps we can take to improve performance after looking at the fresh PCPitstop Results. _____________________________________ I want you to start thinking about the utilities and applications that you wish to install. Make a list. It's your machine, so you get to make the final decisions. But I think you may be beginning to recognize that some of the stuff you had installed could have been hurting performance. If you will allow it, I'll offer my recommendations about useful software and choices to be made within your preference list. See you again, after the above and the fresh PCPitstop Results.
