Hi Quicksigns Good to hear that its up and running. Some questions: Now, this slow behavior, is it limited to internet browsing or is the PC slow in generally? How about booting, does it take more time than usual? Have the PC been faster prior to the infection? You should also check that all drivers are intact in your controlpanel under system-->Device management Any yellow or red ! / ? indicates a problem. Regards Abydos

The PC runs as fast as usual. And the boot up time is the same. The internet was faster before the infection. Pages would load instantly. Literally. But anything that has to access the internet is slow. Napster takes forever to sign in and so does MSN. Firefox, IE, and Opera all have the same page load speed. I have reset both the cable modem, and the Netgear router. The router has a built in firewall and that has been turned off. Looked at the Device Manager and the only RED X that I have is for the onboard Ethernet controller that I do not use. My laptop still loads pages instantly, so I think we can rule out the modem or router.

Hi Quicksigns Well, i wasn't suspecting the router or modem to be the problem here. Mainly because you hadn't mentioned that the problem was present with your labtop aswell. Let me just clarify for you, I don't know anything about the infection you suffered from. And therefore I couldn't / wouldn't guess which systems-files / settings it might have tampered with. But a general cleanup sometimes works wonders! How much do you do in cleaning up among useless files, temp.files, recent URL's etc. Do you defragment your drives on a regular basis? Is your pagefile set to the right settings? A re-install of your browser's might be the easiest course of action. Just remember to backup your bookmarks. That goes for IE aswell, if its still behaving weird. You might not be using it on daily basis, but you need it for windows updates. Regards Abydos

This hard drive is new, about 3 months old, and I clean out the cache in Firefox Every3 or 4 days. And I don't know what the page file is set at. I am going to uninstall Firefox and reinstall it with a clean copy. But what gets me is Napster and MSN taking so long to get connected. Is it starting to look like a windows reinstall? I made backup files of all my work files and can do that as a last resort.

Hi Quicksigns

A full re-install is certainly not needed, and is a bit to drastic to be doing because of slow browsing.

I'll provide you with two links that gives solutions and tools for trouble shooting slow web browsing. Instead of I sitting here writing it all down (Not lazy, merely practical) B)

LINK 1
LINK 2

To find your pagefile, follow this path:

Goto controlpanel (Either through "my computer" or the start menu)
system
Advanced
Performance (not sure its english name, got danish version. But its the first option) Click the radio button settings
Advanced tab
Bottom where it says Virtual Memory, click the radio button

You are now in the pagefile area. Notify your settings and leave that info + Real physical memory (RAM) you have on the PC, in your next post.

I have 2gigs of ram and the page file is set to 2046. Looked over both the links, but most of it has to do with upgrading from Dial up to Broadband.

Hi Quicksigns My fault with those pages  Its links i have lying around, should have been updated. But the advice about Java still goes, especially if you have more than one installed. This happens quite often, because people doesn't always realise that updating Java, doesn't remove the old version! So if you have more than one entry of either Java or JRE in add / remove programs, you need to uninstall the old versions. Other than that, the solution might be to re-install your browsers. The pagefile is that a fixed value? e.g. 2046 in both minimum and max? what is recommended minimum? Regards Abydos

Only 1 JRE running. The page file is set on custom size. Minimum allowed: 2 MB Recommended: 3067 MB Currently Allocated 2046 MB Should I click the radio button next to "System Managed Size" to turn it on.

Hi Quicksigns

Do you have more than one partition on that PC?

The reason i ask, you can read about in one of my posts in an old topic.
The numbers are for that person, yours would be different, so please don't use those numbers.

I only have 1 partition. On this laptop I am running both XP and Linux Ubuntu. So the page file numbers are different. But the desktop has only 1 partition.

Then I would set my minimum to the 2046 as it is now, and my max value to the recommended 3067. If you at some point in the future have to format and re-install, you might wanna have two or even 3 partitions on it. As for the slow web-browsing, i think a re-install of your browsers are the solution. Otherwise we could be running a guessing game. If the problem still exist after re-install, the solution / problem is likely buried in some of your internet settings. Just a thought. Have you tried cross-checking the value settings for your connection with the ones on the labtop? Regards Abydos

It was merely a thought of mine, because you mentioned that the labtop was running fine. If the general internet connection settings were different, it might be something there. I'll admit, my knowledge about labtops are very limited, so if they need different connection settings, please disregard my thought here  Regards Abydos

I went to Install / Uninstall in Control panel and uninstalled Mozilla Firefox. Opened My RegClean 5.0 and deleated all the registry entries with firefox. Downloaded a fresh copy and installed it. Opened it and it has the same settings. All my bookmarks are still there, Passwords, everything. It's like I didn't do anything at all. What did I do wrong?

Ehe, i think you need to delete the Mozilla folder manually. But your bookmarks haven't anything to do with slow browsing. How does it behave? still slow or? Btw. all your settings, addons and bookmark are found in the Mozilla folder under defaults-->Profile. Regards Abydos
