Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
http://siri.urz.free...mitfraudFix.zip
Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.

Posted Image

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter

Posted Image

This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. It will create a file named:
c:\rapport.txt

What are the popups you're getting? If you have the internet cable / line disconnected from the PC, does it still happen?

I just did a Search using Smitfraudfix. Am I supposed to clean also? No, the popups do not appear if I disconnect my DSL line. But once it is connected, the popups will continue and pile up with no end. Sometimes, it will wait for a few minutes and then they will reappear on their own. They are ads for Vegas, New cars, weight loss etc. No adult stuff, thank god! Any idea what it is?

There's no indication of the Smitfraud infection. Are you using a popup blocker like Google Toolbar?

Somehow, I cannot install the Google Toolbar. I am using Firefox. These popups appear even when I have the browsers closed. They are not appearing within the browsers.

I have gone into Edit Options and allow www.google.com and toolbar.google.com and Firefox is still blocking it. Not sure why.

They're coming through the internet when you have the cable plugged in. You don't have to have the browser open.

Lets try this:

* Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found: Posted Image
  • If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
    Posted Image
This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
  • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply.

Got Google Toobar to install after reading Toolbar help. You probably know it is not working. I am on my laptop while Dr. WebCureIt is scanning. Looks like it might take a while. I see a lot of 526_620.exe, Trojan Popupers being deleted. Hopefully this will work after reboot. Will post report after scan is completed. I am running scan in Normal Windows mode. The popups keep appearing while the drives are being scanned. Does this matter?

I am running scan in Normal Windows mode.

That should be OK. If after it's done and you reboot, if you still get popups, unplug your internet connection and run it again.

LDTate, it is still scanning on my desktop. About halfway through. I see some objects e.g. 526_620.exe, Status - Trojan.Popuper where it is blank under the Action field. Does that mean the file will not be deleted or moved? Is that a concern?

Not sure really.
If you're on your laptop, unplug the internet connection from the PC. That should make it run faster.
