sorry no i can't recommend a router but i'd definitely get a wireless N version, just for it's faster wireless data transfer speeds especially if you plan on watching any videos/movies etc streamed from the internet or your main pc. before deciding on the nexus 7 tho you could always go to a pc shop and actually handle one to see if your happy with it, don't forget your more than likely going to be holding it like a book, so quite close to your face and to be honest i think the 7" size is more or less the perfect size/weight for that. don't forget to get the 16GB version too. they have stopped making the 8GB version and are now selling the 16GB version at the same price the 8GB version went for, so you might still find some unscrupulous sellers trying to pass old stock of the 8GB version to you instead of the 16GB version at the same price.

I cannot seem to find the apps for the games that are available for the nexus 7. Shouldn't there be a lot of them? I googled it and found very few. Do you know where there would be a list of them? Thanks.

most of the apps you'll probably get from googles own app store. :- https://play.google....tore/apps?hl=en

doesn't seem like there are a lot of games, mostly political and news stuff. I was hoping for words with friends and family feud, hidden objects - games like that.

don't know where your looking patti but there are loads of games apps.

i just did a search for the free games apps only and it gave me 20 pages with 24 on each page so just on those pages that's 480 free games and said near the top that there's at least a thousand results for my free games search.

https://play.google....e...=456&num=24

i think i read somewhere there are over 500,000 google apps with more being added all the time.

The big question is how do you connect to the net ? Should that be via a router that's half the battle, if the router has Wi-Fi then you don't need anything else, as long as the unit you get has Wi-Fi built in, and if getting the one your looking at it does come with Wi-Fi from what I saw, albeit a slightly different name, if all this is true, then you shouldn't need anything else.

I connect to the net through cable. I have no router or WiFi. Do most of these units come with one or the otherl Do you have suggestions as to what device I should get? I probably don't need anything, but it would be fun to be able to play with the games, facebook, etc from another room. I just don't know which one to get. I have looked at them all, but haven't played with them long for any length of time. My daughter has the galaxy tablet and loves it, but that is her only computer. My other daughter is thinking of getting the kindle fire hd. Quite a bit of difference in action and money. I guess at this point I would want the one that had the most available game apps. Thank you. Hope I didn't step on your toes Terri??

course not patti, i've got small feet. :P like to know why people always call me terri tho instead of terry, not that i mind it's just we have another member who always does the same and why i mentioned it. hardware wise the nexus 7 is better than the galaxy tab2 7 and kindlefire hd in my opinion, better cpu and better screen. price wise both the kindle and nexus are the same, not sure on the galaxy tab2 7 inch, but think it's about the same maybe slightly dearer. apps wise i don't think you'll be unhappy with the nexus 7 and googles app store, even tho they all have their own place for buying apps and media content, kindle is amazon based, nexus is google based and galaxy has it's samsung store they all run a linux based android os (even if slightly different versions, and seeing how android is developed by google, they will always have the latest version in their hardware), so the same apps should work on all 3. as for the router speak to your internet provider and see if they do a wireless N router or can recommend one for you, but really any wireless N router will be ok. until you do get a wireless router and can make a direct connection to the internet, you will always be able to add apps and media content by downloading them to your pc and then transfering them across to the tablet for use later in bed etc.. wouldn't surprise me if when you get together with your daughters, all three tablets could share each others apps and media content like books and videos ( unless it's copyrighted material of course which would be illegal.) through your pc. (don't hold me to this, but i don't see why not. ) if there's any apps/books/videos your daughters have on their tablets that you want just make a list and we'll see if they are available from google shop if you can't find the answer or are worried about googles content, personally i wouldn't be worried because there's loads there and growing all the time.

Thanks Terri, you make me feel so good and confident. Do you suggest a wireless router and is that something I just get at Best Buy? What is Wi Fi? Years ago we had a router and it was nothing but trouble, kept interfering with our computer. This was about 8 years ago. What is a wireless N router. I am afraid to call the internet company because they are always trying to sell you stuff you don't need. I will let you know when I decide which will be closer to black friday. Hope I can get a deal. I will be sitting at my computer at 12:01 am.

you will definitely need to get a wireless router if you want to be lazy on a sunday morning and lay in bed while facebooking. :D or to connect to the internet from anywhere in your home. ;) wi-fi is just another name for a wireless connection. the N just denotes it's speed, there first was B(slow) followed by G(faster) and now we are at N(fastest) the tablet can connect at all 3 speeds and most routers can send signals nowadays at all 3 speeds but it does need to state it is N rated. if not it's just b/g rated and not what you really want. besides the speed benefits of N they also have a stronger signal so can be connected to from rooms where you might not be able to with a b/g signal. now because i'm not in america i don't really know how things work exactly with your connections. (and to be honest internet is not my strongest point, if i have any where computers are concerned. ) there are basically two types of wireless routers, 1 has a modem built into it so it will connect straight to your internet connection in place of the modem you already have, these have a connection on the back where you plug the cable from your internet into it along with ports where you plug your pc in ( up to 4 pc's usually can be hardwired to it.) and of course you can connect more devices to it wireless like your tablet. with this type you may have to clone your modems mac address before it will connect to your isp. the second type is more or less exactly the same but it doesn't have a modem so it uses the modem you already have to connect to your isp and the connection that now goes to your pc will go into the wireless router instead and then you will connect another cable from your pc into the wireless router, again more devices can also be connected by it's wireless signal such as the tablet.. sorry i can't help you choose what's best for you, and why i think it would be a good idea to ask your internet service provider for help in that direction. depending on the age of your daughters maybe they have experience from their own homes so can give you some guidence? shrugs

You have given me so much information here, I feel like I can go right in the store and tell them what I want. I like to be an informed shopper so no one takes advantage of me. I do have a modem so will probably get your second choice. I own the modem also. I used to be the computer guru in our family until the technology passed me by, so nope, my daughters are not the ones to ask. Just a question for you though, I am not doubting you, but what made you decide on the nexus 7 versus the kindle fire, the nook, or any of the other $200 ones out there? I would never pay $400 for one when I have a perfectly good computer a few rooms down. Just curious. Thank you again for your help. I feel very informed, will be there on black Friday (that is the day after Thanksgiving when everything is on sale big time and stores are open all night) and pick out exactly what I know I need. Thanks a bunch, Patti

the reason for my choice is mainly because of the hardware, ie, better cpu and better screen in my opinion. along with reading side by side reviews of all 3 where the nexus doesn't seem to have many cons to owning one. the apps choice is not something i'd worry about because i know there won't be a lot of difference between all 3, yes each will have a small percentage that can only be gotten from their own stores but most will be available from all 3 stores. in all honesty i think you'd be happy with any of the 3, amazons kindlefire hd, samsungs galaxy tab2 7inch or googles nexus 7inch they all seem capable of giving many hrs of enjoyment to their users, just in my opinion the nexus edges it and would be the one i'd spend my money on. don't you worry about doubting me, it's always best to read and get as many different opinions as you can before spending your money, and no i won't be offend if you decided to totally ignore me and get something completely different to what's been mentioned here. if microsofts new tablet was cheaper i might of even suggested you have a look at it, but like apple's ipads it wouldn't be one i'd personally choose for myself even if they were the same price as the ones mentioned so far.

Can I ask what your box\connection is then, the make model of the box, and how you connect to it, I may be missing something here, but as that's the box that controls your net, surely that's what you need to connect to in order to get net access. But terry is spot on with the router etc, but what worries me is how you will connect the router to the box, or ultimately the net, just getting a router will not give you net access, you need to be able to connect to your net access with the router before you can get online via the router, so if you can give us more details about the box you use and it's service, it may throw up some clues as to how this can work.

by box do you mean my modem? It is a motorola surfboard SB6120. That is what I use to connect to the internet. I own it, not renting it from internet company. I have no idea what I am doing here, so I am just going to buy what you guys tell me to buy and hook it up how you tell me to. I have no empty slots on the back however to plus anything else into it. I can take a pic and send it to you if that would help.
