no floppy disk drive. (i know i'm limping along here).

techcurve

Is it possible you know someone to borrow a cd rom drive to temp use or an external usb cd rom drive, that mem test program is really needed to run in order to see if the memory is bad or not.

Jimbo1

Techcurve,

I know it can seem awkward, because you don't have a working CD Drive and no Floppy Drive.

Yes, a borrowed External USB connected CD / RW unit could work to "create" the MemTest86 bootable CD.
Then the same External USB connected CD unit "may" be sufficient for running the test.

That will depend upon whether your machine BIOS supports Legacy USB for boot disks.

One way or another, you will need an Optical Drive or a Floppy Drive to perform Memtest86.

You are so right.

And maybe that makes sense as you probably need to not be in the windows environment to run the test.

Hey Tech team... there must be a linux equivalent. How about this? http://www.pendrivel...-compatibility/

If the bios will support the usb drive it should work, but older systems it will not. My workshop does not support usb drives, but newer systems do. In techcurve case not sure he would have to look at his cmos setting and see if his system supports it or not.

Before speanding more time Techcurve did you follows Doug's instruction in post #8, if not then please do as he instructed so we can see what error codes you are getting when the machine crashes.

I very much doub't the Demension 510 (2005 vintage I think), can be set to boot off a USB.
Yep, Jimbo1 is correct we need Auto-start off and the Error Code.

Here's how to turn off auto-restart: (you can turn it back on after you are finished with this repair by reversing the same steps)

1. Go to Start -> Control Panel -> System
2. Go to Advanced
3. Under the Startup and Recovery section, click Settings
4. Under System Failure un-check "Automatically restart"

Manually reboot the machine.

Now when the system encounters a serious error, it will throw a Blue Screen BSOD, instead of automatically restarting.

Write down with paper and pencil the exact “full” error message you may be receiving if you experience a Blue Screen Error or Stop Message

Post the Error Message information into your next reply so that we can identify what next steps may be necessary

An sfc /scannow might help too.

As far as a possible memory problem is concerned, it would be worthwhile to replace the 2x256MB sticks with 2x512MB.
Type: 400-MHz or 533-MHz DDR2 unbuffered SDRAM.

Cheers,
Lee

Don't worry about that yet techcurve. One step at a time is the ticket.

Could you please follow Doug's instruction first. They are reprinted in my above post.

Ok, from the original post in the Melware section:

it has crashed and the blue screen error message was:

stop:0x0000008E (0x0000005,0x80579909,0xA8C14590,0x00000000)

Error code 1000008e - points to faulty hardware (any hardware including memory) or faulty drivers.

As you can't run a Memtest at the moment, I would first do a MS Windows update and also check to see if there are any drivers available there.
You could also go to the Dell support site for your model E510 (510 is not listed at Dell) and upgrade your motherboard and video drivers (not Bios) from there.

Cheers,
Lee

Hey Techcurve,

Glad to see so many talented folks following your situation.

Sorry about the difficulty you have had regarding Microsoft Memory Diagnostic and MemTest86.

I've been spending my time researching for an alternative method for testing, and it seems that none is readily available for use at this time.
________________

So we have few options.
Please read through my entire recommendation before beginning to attempt any of it.

What we can theorize, is that your machine is suffering either from RAM Memory fault, or from a device Driver that is corrupted.

The following involves working inside your computer tower case.
If you are not already familiar with Electrical Safety and Electro-Static precautions, please read:
http://forums.whatth...howtopic=103649

Option #1.

You can physically remove all-but-one of your RAM sticks.
Boot your machine with that single stick of RAM and evaluate performance.
(note: Most likely your machine will run "slower" but we are only looking for a condition under which you no longer receive the Error Warnings.)

Rotate through your other RAM stick(s) until you have tried each of them alone.

If one or more function successfully, while one or more cause the error warnings, then you have isolated that a RAM fault does exist for specific RAM stick(s)..... Replace the faulty ones, and keep the non-faulty ones.
________________________-

Caveate.... and this is a "big" consideration.

"If" the problem is a faulty Device Driver, then the above rotation of RAM sticks will tell us nothing, because the Error warnings will continue no matter which one or combination of RAM sticks you have installed.

Therefore we need to try to identify any Device Drivers that may be faulty..... first.

Go to Device Manager

here's how:
Start - Control Panel - System - Click on Hardware - click on Device manager.

Inspect the list of Devices and their Drivers.
If there are any Red/Yellow/or Black (!) warnings, please report back here in your next reply.

Now, we know from your report already that the Optical CD Drive is not performing properly.
It may or may not be the culprit.
And since it is not functional anyway, lets take it out of the diagnostic picture.

In device manager, Double-Click on DVD/CD -ROM Drives (yours may be only CD/RW ROM
Next:
Click on the actual Device listed.
A panel similar to the one below will appear
Device_CD_ROM.jpg

Please notice at the very bottom of that panel: Device Usage
Click on the Down-Arrow and Select: Do not use this Device (disable)
Click OK

Now Shut down your machine in the ordinary manner from Start - Shutdown.
Next:
With appropriate Electrical Safety, unplug the main electrical wire from the source or from the back of your Computer.
Next:
"Press" the Start Button on the front of your machine and hold it for 10 seconds
(Obviously the machine is not going to Start, but it will drain any capacitors that held charge on the Motherboard)
Next:
With appropriate Electrical Safety and Electro-Static caution,
1. Unplug the power molex connector to your CD ROM
2. Unplug the IDE ribbon cable to your CD ROM

Leave both unplugged.

Put the panel back on the side of the machine.
Reconnect the power cord.
Start your machine
________________

Are you still receiving the Error Warnings?

If not, then the CD ROM may have been the problem
______________

If yes, you are still getting Error Warnings, then perform the steps of booting your machine with individual Sticks of your RAM, as described above.
______________
