#890345 Audio issues [Chrome]

Not absolutely sure this belongs here, however I'll give it a shot. My audio, on pretty much every Chrome site, is significantly lower. It's to the point where I downloaded an audio booster to hear better. The headset I use doesn't affect it, it's the same if I unplug it. Not sure what exactly is going on, minor issue, don't worry if you don't have a clue.

Do you mean you are trying to connect to a Public WiFi hotspot like a coffee shop or library or  similar?

 

How about giving us some information about your system?

 

What OS, Windows 7, or 10, Home or Pro, 32 or 64 bit?

What is the Make and full model number of the laptop?

 

I'd like to see what Device Manager looks like when showing all devices, installed and hidden.

 

Create a new Environment variable called devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices and set it's value to 1 as follows:

  • Right click on My Computer, Computer or This PC and select Properties
  • Click on the Advanced tab
  • Click on the Environmental Variables button
  • Click the New button under the User variables for xxxxx" area.
  • Set the Variable name as: devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices
  • Set the Variable value to: 1
  • Click OK as needed to close all the windows you opened.

To see the status of everything in Device Manager:

  • Open Device Manager:
    • XP: Control Panel, System, Hardware tab, Device Manager
    • Vista, Windows 7, 8 and 10:Control Panel, System, Advanced System Settings,
  • Make the Device Manager window full screen.
  • Click on View then Show hidden devices.
  • Click on the + next to anything that shows a yellow mark.

Press the Print Screen button to copy the Device Manager window image to the clipboard.

Click Start, type paint and press Enter.

Press Ctrl+v to paste the image to the MS Paint window.
Click File then Save as and save it to your Desktop.

 

Start a new reply.
Click on the More reply options button.
Click on the Browse button below the message input area.
Navigate to where you saved the picture, select it and click on Open.
Click on Attach This File.
Once uploaded, click on Add To Post to the far right of the uploaded file.
Scroll down and click Preview Post to verify the image shows.

 

To collect IP configuration information easily, do the following:

 

Open a Elevated Command Prompt:

 

Press WIN + X to open Start context menu.

Select Command Prompt (Admin)​.

 

Paste the following into the Command Prompt window, exactly as shown, including double quotes:

 

cmd /c "ipconfig /all > postme.txt & ping yahoo.com >> postme.txt & reg query "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings" | find /i "proxy" >> postme.txt & notepad postme.txt & del postme.txt"
 

and press ENTER.

A file will open in Notepad. Please copy and paste the contents here. Close the Notepad window and the file will be deleted and the Command Prompt window will also close. Post results in a reply here.

'What the Tech Classroom'. Founded in 2003 as the Tom Coyote Classroom.

We have made this free interactive educational program available in order to train volunteer malware fighters who will help in security forums after graduation and therefore give back to the community.

It is important to note that the training in our Classroom is not intended for self help lessons, corporate or commercial purposes.

Along the same vein note that this course is not provided in the context of extra curriculum for those in pursuit of a degree, for example in computer science. People here come from all walks of life and while extra skills are valuable what you will need for this course is time, determination and the ability to follow instructions.

After graduation there is no expectation that one cannot apply the skills learned for self endeavors, others are in IT too or go on to start their own small business. But graduates of the Classroom are also expected to volunteer in the forums here and/or sister sites and pay it forward.  :)

Our students are required to participate in answering practice logs and posting to receive feedback from the volunteer Classroom Teachers. Although this is not a piece of cake those who stay the course are well rewarded when they receive their first thank you from a user.

If your real life is busy and you are unable to keep to 48 hour deadlines it would be best not to apply. Time management in the classroom is of the essence as once senior students are working with live users under a teacher's guidance they are expected to respond promptly.

An applicant should not apply to more than one school at a time. Please wait for a decision before applying elsewhere. If you have already applied to another school please wait for their decision before submitting an application here.

 

As a member of the Classroom you are not to be active in similar programs. You may be an active member at other sites, as long as it is just "member" status and not as trainee or malware removal staff.

Please note students are not allowed to respond to users who may have an infected computer nor offer advice on malware removal, and/or intrusive (active intervention) tools in the other forums on this site, or at any other. WTT Senior Class are advanced students whose responses to members in the Malware Removal forums are reviewed by their teachers before being posted.

If you have sought assistance for a PC in any malware removal forum, please do not apply to the Classroom until the machine has been cleaned and the thread closed.

As the training course is given in English fluency in that language is a requirement.

They seem to cost up to 10$ per month. Most offer a free trial or at least $ back.

I wonder how many home users purchase these?

I have never paid for any program but times are changing.

I am thinking obviously of banking. I practice security regarding password complexity and frequency of change but am wondering if a multi device VPN is a luxury or necessity. This of course is in view of the fact that any breach can occur at any time anywhere.It is a matter of odds.

So, to buy or not to buy?

Malware and Spyware Removal Forum Rules:

  • Combofix should NEVER be run unless requested. While it's a powerful tool useful for removing a number of infections, things can, and do go wrong. Sometimes systems even refuse to boot. There are safeguards built into Combofix, but only someone trained in its use will be able to help you recover. The logs generated can also be very difficult to interpret properly.

If you need assistance with a problem, we want to help you! Usually, when your computer isn't working right, you would like it fixed as quickly as possible. This post will give you some information and procedures you can follow in order to ensure your issues are resolved as quickly as possible.

If you think your system is infected with malware...
The instructions in this post are not for you. Instead, you'll need to visit our specialized Malware Removal Forum. There are specific instructions posted in that forum for you to read before posting a new topic. There are dedicated malware removal specialist who will assist you in cleaning up your computer. Please be patient as they are very busy. If you do not receive any response in over 3 days to your request for help, please read and post a new message here.

Please DO NOT post HiJackThis logs or any other malware diagnostic logs in any other place but the Malware Removal Forum!

Now that we got that out of the way, lets talk about what to do if you DON'T have a malware problem.

At WhatTheTech there are several forums in various categories such as Microsoft Windows, Browsers, Internet and E-Mail, Hardware, Networking, Etc. In order to receive the best possible help, please browse through the different categories of forums and choose the forum that best suits the problem that you are having. When you have decided which forum is appropriate, you may create a new topic to receive help. You will have to create an account with WhatTheTech in order to participate in our forums.


 

How to receive the quickest and most accurate answers to your problem



Be as specific and detailed about your problem as possible:

Its important that you provide as much detail about your problem as possible. Things that are helpful for us include:

  • What is not working right?
  • What were you doing when the problem occured?
  • Were there any recent changes made to your computer?
  • What is the exact, word for word, error message, if any?
  • What steps have you already taken to resolve the problem?
  • If the problem is related to networking or internet trouble, tell us who your internet provider is and how you connect to the internet (wireless, wired), etc.

If you recently visited the malware removal forum please provide a link to that thread also.

The more detail you can provide and the more specific you are about your problem, the faster we can resolve your issue.

 

Provide some basic information about your computer:


 

  • What is the make and model of your computer?
  • If you are having problems with a specific piece of hardware such as a video card or wireless router, provide the exact make and model of that device also.
  • What operating system are you using (Windows XP, Vista, 7 8, 8.1, 10, etc. and if 32 or 64 bit) and what Service Packs have you installed?
  • What version of software are you having a problem with?
  • How old is the computer?
  • Has any maintenance been performed on the computer such as cleaning of the computer's case and fans?
  • Have there been any upgrades to your computer since you purchased it?
  • How much memory and hard drive space do you have?

The more information you can provide about your computer the easier it is for us to pinpoint if your problem is related to your computer's configuration or parts. It also makes it easier for us to provide specific instructions for your exact model of computer.

If you are unsure about some of this information don't worry about it. If you are able to run the PCPitStop test in the next section it can provide a lot of this information for us.

 

Create a system profile of your computer:


The folks at PCPitStop have provided a great tool for analyzing and providing information about specific components of your computer. This tool can be very useful to helpers in identifying possible underlying causes of your problems. It will help us to get a better insight into how well your computer is performing over all and what kind of software and hardware you are using.

How to run PCPitStop's Overdrive tests:


  • Please click here to go to the PCPitStop Overdrive sign-up page: Signup at PCPitStop (You need to use Internet Explorer with this test so that an ActiveX control can be installed.)
  • Click Create a free account
  • Enter in your relevant information on the sign-up page. You must sign-up in order to have your results recorded so that we can take a look at them here.
  • After signing up you'll see the Registration Complete page, and you can click Test Your System Now to return to the test page.
  • Login with your newly created e-mail address and password on the left hand side.
  • Follow the directions to Scan this system now. An activeX control will need to be installed. It is safe, and you should allow it to be installed.
  • Once the tests have been run, you will see an Almost there page requesting further information about your computer and your experience with PCPitStop. You don't have to provide any more information, just scroll down to the bottom and click GO.
  • A test results page will display, and we need the link to that page.
  • Look in the address bar of your browser. It will look like http://www.pcpitstop.com/betapit/... Please copy and paste that URL and include it in your request for help.

    Note: PCPitStop may recommend that you use certain utilities to fix problems on your computer. At WhatTheTech, the help we provide is free. We do not endorse or recommend the use of any products PCPitStop may suggest. Instead, we prefer to help you with each issue manually without using possible pay to use programs.

Backup your data:


Last, but certainly not least, you need to backup your data! Its always important that you backup things that are important to you. Drive failure and accidental data loss is a reality of life. If you have important data such as documents and pictures you need to back them up! There are many methods and locations to back up your data such as flash drives, CD-Rom, external hard drives, and even on-line storage. This should be done on a regular basis even if you aren't experiencing trouble. But, now that you are having a problem it is even more important.

By backing up your data before you request help you and the person(s) assisting you will have better peace of mind knowing that any accidental system changes will not cause you to lose precious data. When you post your request for help, please tell us if you have backed up your data or not. This is an important procedure and you should ask for help if you need to.

What to do if your problem might be hardware related...
If your computer is experiencing freeze ups, reboots, or blue screens of death there may be hardware problems present. The following procedures can help you to eliminate or substantiate the possibility of hardware problems.

How to perform some basic maintenance and hardware tests:

If the person(s) helping you suspects a hardware problem is at the root of your issues, they may ask you to perform these additional procedures. These procedures are time consuming. By completing these tasks in advance you will be much further ahead. In your initial post for help please notify us of what procedures you performed and of any errors you may have encountered.

Please read and perform all the following procedures that you are comfortable with:

  • Perform some Basic Maintenance such as cleaning your computer's case and fans. This link also has some safety information when working on and around computer's and computer parts.
  • Test your computer's memory and ensure there are no loose connections in your computer. Older computers can often get bad connections that cause memory and other failures. These can be the source of all sorts of problems and should be eliminated before pursuing any software issues.
  • Scan your hard drive for bad sectors, file system damage, and hard drive failure.  It is important that you use the options to scan for and recover bad sectors. Be patient while the utility runs because it takes a while. Pay attention for messages about windows replacing bad clusters. These are signs that your hard drive could be failing, and this should be reported in your request for help.

 


By following the above procedures you will be able to provide the best information possible to the helpers at WhatTheTech. Doing so will result in a faster response time and more accurate answers. It will allow us to focus specifically on the problem at hand and prevent us from having to refer you back to maintenance articles and other documents for you to perform before we can give you help.

I have a friend who just got an ipod on yesterdday. She somehow set a security code on it without knowing that was what she was doing. Now she can't listen to her music that she downloaded on it. Can the code be overwritten and reset? Denise

I find that for various reasons I must continue to use Win 7 Pro into next year and beyond.I will only be connecting to the web in order to send a monthly report to a friend using Office 2000 and running several older programs that are not web bound that I cannot afford to change.My question is what is the best protection for me while I am on the web for the few minutes needed to send my report?

I will be visiting the web using Linux Mint as an operating system for most browsing as I have it running on a completely separate SSD.But I want to be sure the short interval I am on the web using Win 7 I will be fairly safe.

Hi pautpa,

Sorry to hear of the issues you are finding with diminishing disc space and the free space becoming filled up quickly even when you have removed unwanted applications.

 

Malicious code present on your computer has the ability to do this, but before Juliet can work her magic and help you remove any malicious code that may be present we need to free up sufficient space on your computer so that you can download the scanning and cleaning tools that will enable her to see what is going on inside your computer.

 

Here's an outline of a plan of campaign for your consideration:

 

1 Check your system images and disc images to make sure you can locate them easily, if you have the ability to verify them then please do so. If for any reason you do not have system or disc images then it is recommended that you make some immediately, Keep at least one copy safe offsite on removable media (external hard drives (USB) are very useful for this) if you don't have a system image or Win 7 repair disc then make them now.

(Start>Computer>Right click C drive>Properties>Tools>Back up now>System image, and then follow on screen directions (you can use similar instructions to create a System Repair Disc.

I  usually advise my customers that they should have at least 3 copies of their important stuff on different media....( they rarely follow this advice.... but it's still good advice!)

 

2  If you have your data files on a separate partition that you have not yet imaged it would be wise to check your backups, make sure they are are all complete and include everything you need.

 

3 Locate and keep safe all your installations discs and product serial keys/numbers (including that for Win 7 itself)

 

4 We will now try to free up some free space, so using some of the previous steps this time it should be:

(Start>Computer>Right click C drive>Properties>General>Disk Cleanup (this will initiate a scan and then produce  some data for you including how much space it is likely to free up and how it is made up, if the saving is worth while then you can go ahead with the cleanup)

 

5 Let us know much disk space you have managed to free up.

 

6 Now we will try and consolidate the position by checking your hard drive for errors and consistency.

the steps are:

Start>Computer>Right click C drive>Properties>Tools>Error Checking>Check Now> place a tickmark in each of the options> click start, accept the warning by clicking on Schedule disk check click apply/start>OK and restart your computer. This procdure will take several hours to run and you will not be able to use your computer whilst it is running, Do not interupt it or try to restart your machine( the procedure will restart your machine when it has finished)

 

7 Next open a command prompt with elevated privileges ( Start> type in cmd and on the dropdown menu right click on cmd or cmd.exe and click  Run as Administrator, click OK, and at the DOS like box type

sfc /scannow

and press enter key

The utility will check all protected Windows system Files and repair them if damaged or replace them if missing.

 

Finally check your remaining hard drive space, is it showing a reasonable amount of free space?

 

Take a screen dump and attach it to your reply so we can see the amount of free space you have available

As paws said... these things are strictly based upon the mathematical permutations.  The "hardest" password will always be the longest.  For example, any 15 letters, all the same case, will come out nearly 20k years (any15 times a single number is only 4 days). Capitalize just one of the 15 letters and it becomes over 16 million years (doesn't matter which one).  Capitalize any two, and you are at over 800 Billion years.

 

If I type my name in (First with the first letter capitalized, space, last with the first letter capitalized) and it says over 117 million years.  However, no one would consider that a safe password.

 

So, when picking a password, the longest one will be the toughest.  The variety of "styles" of characters (Uppercase,lowercase, numbers, and special characters if allowed) will increase the security.  However, you could have a 20 or 25 character password that contained upper and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters... but is actually your name and birthday... and it may be considered a "strong" password but would not be a "smart" password.  Brute force is based upon permutations, but behavioral analysis is often a faster way to break protection.

Sounds about right!

but do be careful that site is not encrypted, however it does say that the calculation is done within the browser, rather than on their server so that is better.

 

However I would still now change the password....

 

Remember also that the time taken to "break a password" using a brute force attack, is an estimate and is based on the total number of permutations... its possible (although highly unlikely) that the correct password could be established at an earlier time!

OMGoodness! Jeff!  A bit delayed but I just had to say Hi... I really need to log in here more often. It is so good to see you.

I got a good laugh about the 1/4" of snow. Most of my family migrated back to southern Illinois and they shut the town down at the mention of snow. Too funny! Where I am it's like Tom says. Just put 'er in 4WD and go for it! Minus the chains though. I think they're illegal here in east central Illinois.

Thanks Corrine. The folks at sysnative.com are fantastic when it comes to sfc problems (and a lot of other problems too).

 

Wish we or GeeksToGo had a course on reading, interpreting and fixing SFC, SURT and DISM logs and file corruption.

Is the problem with a wired connection

but my computer is wired

 
or a wireless problem.
 
What is the complete model number?

Click on Start then Run or press Window key (next to left Ctrl key) +R and paste the following into the Run box, exactly as shown, including double quotes:

cmd /c "ipconfig /all > postme.txt & ping yahoo.com >> postme.txt & notepad postme.txt & del postme.txt"

and press ENTER.

A file will open in Notepad. Please copy and paste the contents here.

Close the Notepad window and the file will be deleted and the Command Prompt window will also close.

If you have been having problems with Java, and you have followed some of the instructions on the forums you may find that you no longer can get Java to install because of an error.

When you attempt to run the java installer file you receive the message:

This software has already been installed on your computer. Would you like to reinstall it?

When you click Yes to the above question you receive the error:

This action is only valid for products that are currently installed.

This problem is caused because the Windows Installer information for a previous installation of Java has been removed or damaged, but the related registry keys are still present causing the Java installer to think it is already installed.

This problem can be caused if you used the "Windows Installer Cleanup Utility" to remove the Java™ entries without first uninstalling Java properly.

To fix this problem you must remove the two places in the registry that the Java installer looks at in order to determine if it is already installed. By removing these entries, the Java installer will begin a new installation instead of attempting to repair the old corrupt installation.

Updated Jan. 22, 2011 -- Created an automatic fix in executable form.

NOTE: The batch file method listed below no longer works on Windows XP in many circumstances due to a limitation in command line parameters supported by Windows XP.

This problem is confirmed in Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7.

Because the registry keys that need to be removed are different for each version of Java, I have created a batch file you can download to find and remove the entries automatically.

Here's how to fix Java:
  • If you are able, uninstall all previous versions of Java in add/remove programs in your control panel.
  • Next, you may download the current version of Java here: http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
    I recommend that you use the offline installer version.
  • Now, download the fix:Attached File  fixjava.zip   336bytes   39878 downloads

    Open the fixjava.zip file, extract and run the file fixjava.bat . If you are using Windows Vista, or Windows 7 you must right-click the fixjava.bat file and choose "Run As Administrator". If you do not see the run as administrator option, drag the fixjava.bat file to your desktop and then try to run as administrator from there.
    The batch file will run briefly without confirmation.

  • You may now install Java without any errors about it already being installed.

The contents of the batch file are listed below:

This fix will work on Windows XP under certain cirumstances, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 for both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the Java 6 runtime environment.
