Hello,

Hope I can get a little direction. I fell victim to the autorun.inf virus via a flash drive. I have cleaned the flash drive and thought I cleaned the PC as well. After the virus scan, found and healed the threat. I emptied the virus vault. Rebooted the machine and ran the scan again. This time it came up clear, so I thought I rid myself of it. After a few hours of online time, my normal daily scan would begin and there would be the file again. (When not online it doesn't seem to find it. or at least today after 2 hours with the computer on but no browsers open it didn't). It finds it on my C: drive my partitioned D: (backup) drive that I don't use and my external hard drive F:. It also finds it in a restore file on both c and d drives. I have also run a program called cleanautorun which did not find the file anywhere. So at any rate, here is a copy of my hijack this log. Any insights would greatly be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi mickey7,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link –> http://forums.whatthetech.com/How_Disable_…ams_t96260.html

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Hi Tomk,
Thanks for looking into my problem. I followed the steps given to me and here is the log from the ComboFix:

mickey7,

Azureus and LimeWire
You have Azureus and LimeWire, a P2P/file sharing programs installed on your computer. P2P applications like it are the largest source of malware we see. You'll be doing yourself a favor by removing it.

References for the risk of these programs can be found in these links:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/commun…protection.mspx
http://www.techweb.com/wire/160500554
http://www.internetworldstats.com/articles/art053.htm

I would recommend that you uninstall Azureus and LimeWire, however that choice is up to you. If you choose to remove these programs, you can do so via Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs.

If you wish to keep it, please do not use it until your computer is cleaned.

Download Rooter.exe to your desktop

  • Then doubleclick it to start the tool
  • A Notepad file containing the report will open, also found at %systemdrive%\Rooter.txt. Post that here

Next

COMBOFIX-Script

  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    File::
    c:\program files\wt3d.ini
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\ndisprot.sys

  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Then

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.

In your next reply please provide:
  • Rooter report
  • ComboFix.txt
  • Kaspersky report
  • New HijackThis log taken after everything else completed

As for the Kaspersky Report it found one infection on my F:drive (my external hard drive) Just prior to Kaspersky running part of the delay was that my avg although I thought disabled still started it's nightly scan. Which also found only one infection this time but not the same one. AVG still found an instance of .inf threat in the back up drives restore file whereas the Kapsersky was just an infected mp3 file. However there was no option to quarantine or delete the file from the Kaspersky web site. I did not manually remove it at this time. Per instructions, waiting for approval before removing anything.:

mickey7,

  • Please open HijackThis and run Do a system scan only
  • Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below(if present):
    • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nwiz] nwiz.exe /installquiet
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SigmatelSysTrayApp] stsystra.exe
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ISUSPM Startup] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\isuspm.exe" -startup

  • Close all programs except for HijackThis.
  • Click on Fix checked
  • A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES.
  • Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.

Next

COMBOFIX-Script

  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    File::
    c:\windows\system32\updater\explorer.exe
    F:\Shared\here comes the heartache (256k 44800).mp3

    Folder::

    Registry::
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
    "Updater"=-

    Driver::

Then go ahead and run your normal scan. Don't worry about anything in restore point or in quarantines. Let me know what you find.

Then give me a new HijackThis log.
Ok next round. Here is the newest ComboFix log:

mickey7,

Is this getting boring? Looks like we've got you playing solitaire while you wait.

Log looks good :D

Time for some housekeeping
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK
  • Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
  • [external image: Posted Image]
The above procedure will:
  • Implement some cleanup procedures.
  • Reset System Restore.

Please re-enable any security that was disabled.
Please delete Rooter.

The following is my standard advice for the future. Use what you can and pat yourself on the back for what you're already doing.

Please take time to read Preventing Malware - Tools and Practices for Safe Computing. Very important information for your consideration is contained therein.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein

Also: "How to prevent malware"

Please respond back that you understand the above and let me know if you have any questions. Otherwise, this thread will be closed Resolved.
