Hi, and Welcome to WhatTheTech :)

Apologies in the delay in a response. We are overwhelmed with logs at the moment and there aren't enough helpers to go around. If you still require help, please do the following:

Please download DDS and save it to your desktop.
  • Disable any script blocking protection
  • Double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done two logs should open:
  • DDS.txt
  • Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
—————————————————
  • Post the contents of the DDS.txt report in your next reply
  • Attach the Attach.txt report to your post by scrolling down to the Attachments area and then clicking Browse. Browse to where you saved the file, and click Open and then click UPLOAD.
Please describe how your computer is behaving at the moment, listing any symptoms and problems that you are experiencing.

Thanks.
Thanks so much for the reply. Periodically (like once a day) when i'm online or email everything will freeze and I have to restart the computer. It may not be a problem, but I wanted to double check since it's never done this before. Your Java Runtime Environment is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 12.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 12, The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save it to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially any web browsers.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel click on Uninstall Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop right-click on jre-6u12-windowsi586.exe and select Run As Administrator… to install the newest version.

Please right click Internet Explorer on your desktop and then select "Run As Administrator". Next, go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

NOTE: Internet Explorer will temporarily have administrator privileges, this is required for the scan but dangerous for normal surfing so do NOT open any other websites in IE until after the scan has finished and this window has been closed.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.
Thanks.
Hi, I ran the ATF cleaner and updated Java. Both scans seemed to be clean. There were no threats/no log on the Kaspersky scan and I've posted the malware bytes scan below. I'm editing to add that when I just launched a new ie page and tried to get to a website it just stalled and wouldn't go there, so I rebooted and when it does that it takes a long time to shut down, but when I reboot it works fine. Hi, Do you get problems with Firefox as well, or just with Internet Explorer? As you say, there doesn't seem to be any Malware involved. Did you make any changes to your system around the time that you started getting these issues? Thanks.
Hi,

Did you make any changes to your system around the time that you started getting these issues?

Is there anything that is happening around the time of these problems? By that I mean, are you browsing a website in particular, are you trying to send an email with an attachment (these are just examples)? It may be just be something that happens completely out of the blue, in which case we have a harder job on our hands?

Is there anything that you can do to cause the problem, anything that you know will cause issues?

How consistently does this happen? Every day? More/less often?

Sorry for all the questions, we just need to narrow the issue down a bit.

Thanks.
I can't narrow it down at all – there doesn't seem to be a pattern to it - no particular websites (and no attachments) that it happens on. It just "freezes" and I have to restart, and now i've discovered that it happens with firefox also. It's usually one or two times a day whenever i'm online.
Hi,

Well, all your logs are squeaky clean so I don't think there's any Malware involved. Since the Malware is what I'm here for, I recommend that you start a new topic in one of these forums:
Microsoft Windows
Browsers, Internet and Email

where you you will receive prompt, expert assistance from our Tech Team - who will be able to help you with this problem much better that I can.

I am sorry that there is nothing more that I can do, but as I say, there's no Malware in this. I hope you get the problem sorted.

Thanks.
